Most of the other genres already have one, so we should have one too!

BP the quest is a sub plot, not the main plot
TBP if the object turns out to be useless because all it does is make cheese
QBP it it is actually useful because it makes cheese
Cookies if the object really helps save the day by making cheese

Orcs/goblins/trolls/etc are actually the good races.

Tell the story about one of the big bad's minions instead.

Have your farm boy hero be deluded into thinking he's a destined hero or lost heir to the throne, when in reality he's just a farm boy.
BP: Everyone knows this except him.

Hmm a dare for you to grab:

1 dimensional
3 dimensional

1d hero living in a mansion with people fawning all over him meets 3d villian who lives in a run down apartment, has bills to pay, annoying landlady, girl friend who is high mainetence and who wishes "to just be left alone"

----------

So it's not that easy to get distracted...

Um, what was that again?

Oh yummy. I think I'll take all except the denial and the marriage (possibly end up together though)! That's given me an idea for a major scene too...

I dare you to include two talking swords, that at least once get used in a fight against each other, and spend most of it talking to each other.

Bonus points if they get along really well, and spend the fight commiserating while their wielders try to kill each other.

Double bonus points if they end up having your novel's primary romance subplot.

My mad scientist character in our Deadlands game fits this disturbingly well. It always weirds out the other players when I start in on a rant about how the turbine drives the spinning MAGNETS that produce a... a.. VORTEX in the LUMINIFEROUS AETHER, thus generating a stream of GALVANIC ENERGY, the very stuff of LIFE ITSELF, which can OVERRIDE the natural GALVANIC IMPULSES in the victims's FLESH... while making sketches of a device that'd actually work perfectly well (yes, you can use a generator to electrocute someone), despite all of the principles my character thinks it works on being completely wrong.

LOL!!! I may just have to adapt my world setting to allow Fred to exist... Just so I can do this dare!!
It might actually work with what I'm doing too, as the water is disappearing from my world.

Does it mean that there's something wrong with me when my first thought was that this was actually do-able in a particular Role-Playing Game inspired world setting?

I mean, really, this could be done. Seriously.

All it takes is a suitably magical school environment.

Darn. Now I have to actually write this. Do I still get the points if it's not in my NaNo novel but an independent short story?

I might snag the talking sword one, although it could very well transfer over to some other kind of weapon if swords don't work in my story. Sounds tremendous fun!

Bonus points if they get along really well, and spend the fight commiserating while their wielders try to kill each other.

Double bonus points if they end up having your novel's primary romance subplot.

ROFL!!! I think I might just try to include this sometime!

Do I get triple bonus points if another character hears the swords whispering sweet nothings to each other and mutters, "Get a room, you two!"

Have your MC be not only a magic Hero, but also a proctologist.
BP - if the extended knowledge of the human posterior is somehow essential to solving the big magic quest.
DBP - if this is not in an comic fantasy.

Oh my Lord... I'm SO ninja'ing the flamango dare!

Mine are for urban fantasy:

-Give your MC a really ridiculous car that s/he hates, but keeps, because it's a magic car.
2pts: The MC has to say something like "Hipper-squibble snargle-snoof" at top volume to make the magic car work.
3pts: The car isn't actually magicl at all. And the MC doesn't realize until the climax of the book.
4pts: That discovery IS the climax of the book.
5pts: You take this dare and you're not writing urban fantasy. (Imagine a bard pulling around his flying prius.)

Dare: The MC is a pacifist.
BP: ... who needs to *kill* the villain.
DBP: S/he does it anyway because the world peace shall be restored, or for some other clichéd reason.
TBP: S/he DOESN'T do it and allows the villain to take over the world.
Cookie if you can include both DBP and TBP :P

++ if no one thinks this is strange
+++ if this somehow fits in with the rest of your story
++++ if the MC after having seen it for a few chapters starts pointing out that they're being followed by a strange pink bird
+++++ if the MC is the only one that notices it
++++++ if the MC's friends start to think he's not right in the head
+++++++ if the MC start suspecting the flamingo to be working for the villain
++++++++ if the flamingo is working for the villain
+++++++++ if the flamingo IS the villain
++++++++++ if flamingo takes over the world
Cookie if MC decides that strange pink birds are actaully very cute and join forces with the flamingo

DBP if they get yelled at for it.
TBP if the rabbits are highly abnormal colors.

Cookies if this new reason is accepted.

I DIED. I'm so doing that one :D

My list of fantasy dares up for grabs:

- Have a character who uses unnecessary suffixes to what he/she says
- 1 bonus point if it is "of Doom"
- 2 bonus points if the character never forgets the suffix
- 3 bonus points if other characters also start doing this after a while, despite having disliked it at first
- 4 bonus points if it is used on words that already have a suffix (e.g. The Forest of Fear of Doom)
- 5 bonus points if the first suffix also is "of Doom" (e.g. The Lands of Doom of Doom)
- 6 bonus points if it actually becomes important for the story (as more than an "in-joke")

I could see that working:
Bad Guy: Now that I have forced you to take my truth serum, tell me. Where is the rebel base?
Suffix Guy: The forest... of Doom.

Have a villain use a FAKE All-Powerful Super-Shiny Orb of Total Awesomeness to trap the protagonist or another antagonist.
Bonus points if the uber-Orb was never real in the first place

Have a really powerful mage character use a machine gun to kill the villain (this is where time traveling is useful)
Bonus points if the MC also nukes the villain's lair.

I'd totally run with this... if I didn't already have my plot outlined >_>
