Hey all! Is there anyone lurking out there that's in the Ventura/Oxnard area? I just moved here this year from Portland and I haven't been able to do any recon on good places to write for a few hours. Anyone out there to befriend me and show me the writing ropes out here would be excellent.

Don't be shy. I don't bite.

Simi Valley here so I'm on the east county side but Ventura is my hometown stomping grounds.

A great place with wifi and a good atmosphere is Latte 101, there's two locations in Ventura but I prefer the one off of Victoria. There are a few great places downtown too but it can get rather crowded quickly, especially on the weekends. There was a great cafe I used to love going to after classes in high school but I think the garden has since been paved over with a parking lot. :(

Awesome! Thank you very much for the heads up. I'll be heading to check out those places in ... about two seconds? No, that might be rushing it a bit. But soon. Definitely soon.

I'm in Camarillo. No ideas on where to write; I have a 3 month old, so I will be doing my writing at home during naptime. :) Glad to see other locals on here though!

not entirely familiar with Camarillo but there's some cute eateries with outside seating that might be nice. I recall a bagel/breakfast/waffle shop over off of Pleasant Valley.

As for Simi, only things I can think of around here are a few coffee places like the two main starbucks, mmm the one next to the yogurt place on LA Ave is good. The Starbucks/Sharkeys/Togos/BaskinRobbins on Erringer has a WiFi hotspot.

Ah! I'm from Simi as well! To be honest, I haven't thought about places that'd be good to write at yet. I suppose there is no reason for this post since I'm of no help... Er... Well, hello anyways! :D

*waves* yea, I've had a hard time thinking of some but I just realized Panera Bread is a hot spot too. I've seen lots of people hanging out there with their laptops working and such. Back in my CLU days, my friends and I had our *spot* at Olga's Kitchen in T.O. but alas, they've been gone for a few years now. Still sad over that.

I'm from Simi as well!!

I can't help on the writing side because I do most of mine at home. I get distracted anywhere else.

I mostly prefer home, too, as I have my music and such around me; however, I think sometimes I like getting the muses into it and chatty when in some situations where interactions are going on between people. I've always been an observer/watcher in that sense because I think it helps me develop my character better and make them more realistic.

We should all get together! Haha. The only Wrimo get-togethers I've been to were in Orange County (where I went to college). It was really fun though I wasn't trying to even write at that time...

I don't mind doing a hang-out. ^_^ Anything better than the places I've recommended? I've only been in town since 2002 so I don't know all the secret places quite yet.

Yea, I work in Westlake so if there's a need to work something out that is closer for some, I'm cool with that. ^_^

Yea, I was surprised too... I recall back in 2007 when I joined I didn't see anyone posting from here. Unless of course I just completely missed it. :D

BTW, we have another Simi person who has sprung up, there's another thread (Simi Valley/Thousand Oaks) in the California::Elsewhere forum section that was posted. East county certainly has its fair share!

That would be me! :D
And I think it would be awesome to get together sometime...or multiple times. I know that just being around one of my good friends who is also a writer gets the juices flowing like no ones business. So imagine a room full of writers! It'll be like a monsoon! XD

Oh, you just got married too? I got married this May and have been super distracted from my writing. I'm actually using Nano to get back into it. While I don't miss the wedding planning (AT ALL), I do love to plan in general. It seems like a lot of people would like to do something and I definitely don't mind planning a mid Nov or end of Nov gathering. Camarillo seems pretty central to everyone (and I live here, so it would be easier for me). If you guys have any ideas of what you'd like to do at a gathering (we may want a break from writing), I'd love to hear them : )

Wow, it's good to see so many people in Camarillo with me! :D I didn't think there'd be anyone out here nanoing it up, haha. But definitely there are some cute places in downtown "Old Town" Camarillo if we wanna try and hit those up, I loooove this little panini place for lunch-time meetings maybe on the weekends or something. Anyway I'll probably be able to reply more intelligently when it's not so late, I've gotta play catch-up tomorrow and read through everyone's posts here plus do homework. Eek!

I'm going to make a quick suggestion here, since we're a little bit scattered and don't really have anyone in charge of us here. If anyone in the area is planning on going out somewhere to write -- whether it's a coffee shop, restaurant, library, park, whatever -- post it up here. Tell us where you're going, the address, the time you'll be there, and any way we might be able to identify you. If anyone is around and feels like joining up, then we have a way of knowing where you'll be. Sort of like making our own calendar, right?

Personally, I'll be looking forward to meeting up with some of you soon!

Ah! I live in Camarillo; it's nice to see there are so many people in the area!
Unfortunately, I usually write at home, but I'd be interested in doing a face-to-face meeting, if we could find a good place!
Though as a general rule, the public library's usually a good place, unless you get distracted by books really easily.

Out of curiosity, how old is everyone here? I get the feeling I'm on the younger side, what with this talk of marriage... I'm sixteen, by the way.

I'm in Camarillo, though I'm in Ventura often since I go to Ventura College. I'm 19 and this is my fifth time doing NaNo, whoo!

Nice to see so many of us in the area this year!

Just as a heads up, there is an Open Mic night at Synapse Cafe in Ventura on thursday that i will be attending and doing my nano'ing for the day there. Anyone is welcome to come to open mic, and maybe we can all read excerpts! Hope to see some people there. I'll be the blond in a top hat.

if anyone needs directions, just get off the 101 at Johnson, and head down johnson road. it'll be the very first left turn into the shops area, and it's connected to Epic. if you go past The Armory, you'll see a sign for Synapse. Boosh.

Hi "East". Don't feel too young. I just turned 23. That may seem like a long way off, but its a little closer than some of the others might be.

The Camarillo Library is a great idea. It looks lovely, after the remodel. We could potluck a dinner on a Friday night or lunch on a Saturday, eat that outside, and then head inside for some writing. I know I love secreting myself into the giant pirate's ship in the kids sections. If anyone's up for that, perhaps next weekend (Friday the 13th or Saturday the 14th), let me know and I get something rolling.

I hope everyone's first week of NaNo is going well.

I'd be up for a Camarillo Library meet-up if anyone was interested! mnpetty's idea with next weekend sounds good. I'm free pretty much any day except Wednesdays.

Well, going with the suggestions above, why don't we have anyone who wants to meet at the front of the Camarillo Library at 6:30 pm this Friday can do so. Since there hasn't been a lot of response, why don't we say everyone brown bags it - bring your own food. Since this is a public place and there are underaged people in the group, it might be best to say no to bringing alcohol. If people want to do that afterward, I've no problem with that.

Easy descriptors: I'm an African-American female. I will likely be wearing my green writing shirt backwards. It'll say "every life writes a poem - what does yours say?" If it's too cold for no jacket - then the shirt will be handing somewhere as a sign.

As of right now, the plan is to eat and hang out for a while, then go into the library and find a place to write for a to be determined amount of time. Then, those of us who are of age and interested may or may not plan to do something afterward.

I hope we all have fun!

Oh, and my actual name is Michelle : )
