Hi to all. I mostly lurk at FSU; my user name is Blue Bead on FSU, too. My novel, also, includes figure skating. It's set against the backdrop of the scandal-plagued 2002 Winter Olympic figure skating competition. The story explores just how far a disgruntled, not-quite-gold-medal worthy men's competitor will go in his quest of get that elusive gold award. It's basically a mystery with lots of suspense and an element of romance. My MC is a female sports' journalist who falls in love with one of the two Russian rivals who have hogged the gold and silver podium positions for the last two years. Someone is unhappy that he hasn't been able to knock these two off the podium. The question is--how far would this "someone" go to achieve his desire for the gold medal position on the podium? Things start to get interesting when a couple of competitors end up sick to the point of being disabled. Things only get worse--more than one skater ends of dead. Someone appears to be picking off the top elite skaters. At least that's how it looks to my MC and she begins to worry that her Russian lover is a target; she decides to do some investigating on her own and ends up in big trouble.

Oooh, fascinating plot, Blue Bead! I'd read that. :D Gotta love lots of ice drama.
Is everyone getting all prepared and ready for NaNo? I lost my initial excitement in the last few weeks due to a busy schedule, but now I'm starting to get really pumped again. November 1st, here I come...

Hi all. I'm melissahlz on FSU. Everyone ready to start writing? (or in Angelskate's case... how's it going so far?)
Now, where do I lodge my formal complaint that the start of NaNoWriMo and Cup of China were scheduled on the same weekend? ; )

I said on FSU that mine was going to be skating, but it turned out that wasn't working so well. So earlier today, I scrapped that idea in favor of one of the others I had. I suppose you could say it's royalty. Think something like, Charles/Diana/Camilla, but my heroine is the Camilla character.
The introduction has worked really well so far, and I know where I'm going with it, so I'm happy.

How is everybody doing? This thread has been really quiet lately, LOL
Presently my word count in at 36,876. The plot is has jelled and is getting more and more involved. I, finally, introduced my villianous character. For the time being the character is only referred to as "he" because I want his real identity to come as a total shock to the reader when he/she discovers who this guy is. Upon that discovery the reader should feel extremely worried about what faces my FMC and her lover. I'm also hoping the reader will realize all those thoughts they're having about this guy pale in comparison to what his reality really is.
I'm finding it difficult with this NaNo story to pump up the suspense even thought the reader will have figured out that the FMC is at her wits end because she realizes her lover is in danger of getting killed. Her problem, at the moment, is she can't get the police to believe what she's telling them; they keep blowing her off, LOL. By the time this story reaches its climax she'll be at her wits ends....which is what I want.

Wow, sounds great, Blue Bead! I'm hooked. :)
Well, as you can see, I crossed the 50k threshold last night, a day earlier than I did last year. It took some heavy back-end pushing to make it possible (I was only at 36k on Thursday...), but I did it. :) My story is nowhere near done, though. But I've started the third act of the story, so it's getting much easier and much more fun to write. Here's to writing like mad this week so I can finish up the actual novel before Thanksgiving! :) Ah, what the pressure of finishing before retail madness starts won't do to ya. ;)

I am so in envy of your green completion bar, Gymfan15, LOL. My own isn't that far off, though. Tonight I made it to 42,438!! The story is moving along well and it's getting more involved with all kinds of complications for my FMC. The farther I get into the creation of this story, the more intriguing it has become. I'm finding myself thinking more and more about how to work out the many details which must all come together just so to make it come out as I originally intended. If only I had more time during the day to work on it. I guess everybody wishes that, don't they, LOL. I'm in a similar situation to you, my story will be nowhere done when I pass the 50,000 mark. The way it is going this first draft may reach 200,000 words before it is over, which is okay; it's only a first draft, LOL
