My favorite part of NaNoWriMo is the write-ins. I love meeting other writers, ingesting large quantities of caffeine and sweets, and oh yeah, banging away at my word count. Writing is normally such a solitary activity, but NaNo lets me sport my writing colors proudly.

I'm starting to scope out potential locations for write-ins, but I'm curious as to what other people have found.

Where's your favorite spot to write in San Diego?

The Encinitas branch of the SDCL. It's perfect! There are computers with Word, it's always quiet, I can grab a hot chocolate or cappucino on Hwy 101 and they'll let me drink it in there.

Plus, I can't drive, so it's hard to get to other write-ins.

Historically, we've had many happy write-ins at Cosmos Coffee Cafe in La Mesa. A favorite place from last year is Monica's at the Park in University Heights. Claire de Lune's in North Park, Rebecca's in South Park, and Influx in Golden Hill are also nice. (Basically any coffee bar that is not a Starbucks works for me.)

Last year the Inkspot hosted regular Sunday write-ins Downtown. They will probably do it again this year, but you'd need to confirm with the powers-that-be over there before showing up.

Once things get rolling around here, if you* find that there is no scheduled write-in convenient to you, I HIGHLY recommend starting your own. Pick a convenient time and place, PM the ML to add it to our calendar, and show up. It's easy!

All of those sound a little too far for me, though I'd love to be at some write-ins this year. Maybe I'll host my own at the Panera Bread just down the street...

Yeah, if you don't mind Bassam's connection with the local mob and porn biz, and the SDPD who frequent for bribe pick-ups. What a great mob front to launder money -- a coffee shop.

Last year i really dug the meetups at Monica's by the Park a lot.
Lately I live at Lestats. I think its pretty laid back and theres tons of room now that they expanded.

I'll echo everyone's previous comments about Monica's being a favorite. I also like writing at the Living Room on El Cajon Boulevard. Lestat's is also a favorite place of mine.

I checked the address for Monica's at the Park and it's a lot closer than I thought it was. Looks like fun for a write-in, too, especially since so many people had a good time there last year.

If you all would like, I can check into using the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens' mezzanine (or other space depending on the time of day and number of people). It's located at 1999 Citracado Parkway, Escondido CA 92029 ( http://www.stonebrew.com/ or http://www.stoneworldbistro.com/pix/ ). I work IT at the brewery and may be able to get the space for a night.

That's a great suggestion Bryon!
I'm sure the Wrimos in NC would love to check out a new local venue! You should also post this in the North County Forum (United States :: California :: North San Diego County), so more people will see it. I think the ML for that region is Blissercise. You could try sending him a PM too, and see if he'd like to have a kickoff party there.

I love this idea! And Balboa Park is such a good place to people watch (except for Mondays, since half of the museums are closed).

I started up a writing group a few months ago, and Lestat's is our unofficial base. Biggest problem is that it can get really crowded.

I loved going to the Living Room Cafe as well, but Cutter's Point Coffee House is two minutes away (its just before it -- the building with the dome ceiling) and the prices are a bit better. I've only been there once, but it didn't seem quite so crowded as Living Room can sometimes get.

I will definitely be attending the write-ins at Monica's. I also love the idea of having write-ins at Balboa Park, if not just a little bit because I was thinking of using it as a potential setting for my novel.

This is probably a longshot, but if any other WriMos around here are taking classes at Mesa College, I was considering hosting a write-in somewhere on campus. Let me know if you'd be interested!

There is also a great place right across the street from the Living Room (red something, I think) that has lots tables and is usually not that crowded.

I've lived in Point Loma for three years and no one ever seems to hold a write in there. -L

I'd also drive up to Stone - the patio out there is beautiful .. the writing might go downhill after a pint or two, but in the early part of the month, I'd appreciate the levity :)

You know what I always say about hosting your own write-ins! ;-) I work in Point Loma. I'd be up for an after work write-in starting about 5:30 or 6pm. However, I have NO idea where good places to meet might be. Any suggestions?

Lestat's is a great place, but I'm pretty open to most areas in SD.

Also - any interest in a weekday, daytime write-in? I'm only working 2-3 days a week in November, sooo....

I've found that if I just plan to write with a bunch of friends, not in the same place but just in general on the computer over messenger, I end up getting alot done. We just talk and it gives us ideas, even if it's a bit less than if we're together IRL. I've also found that our plan this year, to write all through the classes that we're least burdened in, is a kinda good idea due to the chaos around us influencing our writings :3
