How's that plotting and planning coming along? Are you new to Nano or a rugged veteran of word wars and caffeine-fuelled all nighters?

Welcome to our 2 new MLs, Shrike and Hendrik. Thanks for stepping up, guys!

I'll be going for the trifecta this year. I WISH an idea would pop down from the heavens already!

I already posted today, but I'm officially checking in here!

I'm one of the grizzled veterans: this will be my 7th year of a planned 10. I didn't finish the last 2, but hopefully this year I will.

Hello everyone!

This is going to be my first NaNoWriMo! I've had the site bookmarked for years, but never had the balls to actually get started.

This year is the year!

I remember the year I first did nano. It took quite a bit of nerve to commit. Actually, I had considered trying the novel-in-a-weekend contest, which was really crazy, but I found out about nanowrimo in time. Nanowrimo is (comparatively) sensible.

I did get my 50000 words down that November. Welcome to the club.

Hey all...After much fussing, I'm back in for year three, though under an unusual agreement with Shrike and Mady...Suffice to say, this will not be another "Nano-THREE-Mo" for me, especially considering I did the crazy thing in July - a weekend write-a-thon.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to make the write-ins this year because of a very bizarre schedule. And...in order to make by bet with Shrike and Mady, I might even write...using a1939 Underwood Portable Champion typewriter! I JUST don't think the folks at Chapters would appreciate the noise.

@JB - I'm behind you, guy! Type! Type like the wind! Stock up on 5-hour energy drinks and TYPE! And no more hardware failures - that was horrible for you last year!

Howdy samsixx and welcome to the nuttiness that is NaNoWriMo!

Feel free to lean on any of us old timers (I say that with utmost affection) for advice, encouragement and plain old whining.

Also, start callousing up your fingers NOW. Trust me on that one. :)

Hello! Nice to see some familiar people in the forum. It'll be my 2nd year going at it and I can't wait to start. By the way, midnight bowling helps the creative mind if you're looking for an idea to pop down from the heavens. Great twisted story ideas came to me while I was bowling, and I'm not even a bowler.

Hey everyone! So this is my first year doing NaNoWriMo and I'm pretty nervous about it. Not sure I'll be able to get my 50,000 words done though - school and work already take almost all of my time (not to mention midterms)!

Hey!

Fourth time participant (although the first year I barely made it to 1000 words!). I'm actually doing plotting and planning this time; of course, as with the other years, I don't know where I'm heading...

Hope to make it to more than one meeting write-in or party this year.

See you there!

S'UP YUL.

I'm heading into my third official year, and trying something outside my comfortable fantasy niche. Coupled with a full-time brokerage job and twelve university credits (and a husband) it's going to be a wonderfully stressful time. ; )

I'm actually from Laval, so anyone who would like to buddy-up in that area or downtown for mini write-ins, let me know. I'm always looking for fellow writers to watch my notebook while I visit the ladies' room. ;P

Hi everyone, Nano newbie here. I've done rp writing and fanfics, but never my own full-length novel, so it's going to be interesting. An LJ friend of mine has been doing this for quite a few years, and I finally thought I'd give it a shot.

Are there actually meet-ups going to be happening...?

Get-togethers to talk about what we're doing are usually in the Second Cup in Central Station on Wednesday evenings, approx 7PM to 9PM. Normally I, as ML, start showing up during early or mid-October. But this year, unfortunately, I won't be able to be there until October 28. I kept my schedule clear, but my wife didn't....

But others should show up if they wish, and not wait for me. If you want to entice others to show up, announce your intention to show up here. People are more likely to show up if they know others will. And arrive with an improvised sign of some sort that says NANOWRIMO, so they can find you. Shrike, is there any chance you could attend on October 14 and 21?

And Maryse.Tadros is inviting anyone to attend a write-in at another Second Cup in the city. Reply to that message if you'd like to meet there sometime, and arrange a time. And if you go there, let me know if it's overcrowded. The one near my place was quite overcrowded during Sunday afternoon write-ins.

I'm very sorry not to be able to make it for these critical two preparatory weeks this year.

Last year there were write-ins on Thursday evenings in the Starbucks in the Chapters store on St. John's blvd on the West Island. The group continued to meet for a few months after nanowrimo, continuing with write-ins, and then stopped showing up. I gather there some scheduling difficulty arose in April or May or so with Thursdays.

No one seems to be proposing a specific date for that Starbucks this year except:

* samsixx mentioned s/he might be able to do a few Thursdays but suggested Mondays.
* selernce indicated s/he would be available after her work shift on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

So maybe Mondays would be a better time this year for the West Island Chapters? I'd like to hear from a few more people. For the time being I'll try to keep Mondays free. And there's no reason to wait for November before we start meeting. We can hatch plots, define characters, build worlds to use in November, or ignore, wherever the creative spirit leads us. Or maybe you want to use wrte-ins to write a non-nano story in October?

I'll be glad to see you, even though my French is so bad I'll have a hard time understanding anything you say in French. Welcome back to the gang. And have fun.

By the way, I can read French. I just can't understand it spoken. Post here in any language you like, and I'll post in any language I like.

I started a new thread for the West Island.

And we really don't have to wait until November.

Hello all! Melamin here (real name's Carla if you prefer), second year participating.

I'm a West Island girl so I'll hopefully be able to show up at the meetups this year at Chapters. Last year I was stuck with classes every evening so I wasn't able to show up for any of them, but this year I'm done with school and doing the elusive career hunt so I have a nice amount of free time to dedicate to novel writing :)

Hi guys. I'm velvetblue74, or, Em, if you prefer. This is my second year participating, but you probably don't know me, because I have a new username (lost the old one), and didn't post much last year. At all. :p Haha.

I'm still on the fence about participating this year--I have an idea I want to work with when I finish the novel I'm currently working on. It's going to be done soon, just in time for November, which is fantastic. But there is the matter of school and work, and depending on how much time I have, I may or may not participate in NaNoWriMo. I'll be writing all November, but whether it's concurrent with NaNoWriMo remains to be seen.

Also, I won't make it to meetings, either. I live outside the city and have no means of transportation to get to meetings. But I'll try to frequent the Montreal forums more often. :)

Hey, all! I'm pretty stoked about doing NaNo again this year. This is my third NaNo, but my first one in Montreal! Well, actually, I live in Terrebonne and work in Mascouche, AND I don't have a car, so I might not make it to all of the get-togethers, but I will definitely try my hardest to be there when I can! I find the meetings are half the fun!

I just moved here from Victoria, British Columbia (I'm here for the school year working as a language monitor, it's not a permanent move) and am loving the province so far. Looking forward to meeting all of you and writing up a storm! No plot bunnies yet, but I'm not worried. Something appropriately insane usually pops up in my brain in time.

Hey everyone!

I'm Marc-Alexandre, or Laogeodritt, an 18-year-old science student. I've known about NaNo for about three years now (through an informal Writers Guild I'm a member of), but I haven't really felt ready to write a novel. Before now, I've mostly dabbled in short stories, or novelle at most (15k words is the longest I've written). However, I've decided to rewrite an old short story-turned-novella I wrote two years ago, since it was full of plot holes and generally lacked planning for what it became.

I'm not really expecting to reach 50k, although I'm aiming for 25-35k. I guess we'll see what happens once outlining is done.

Anyone in the Longueuil area or otherwise Montérégie region?

Welcome Laegeodritt!

When I began in 2002 I had the same concerns: I never wrote longer works than stories of 10K then. I made it past 50K then and did 3 more years running.

If your experience is similar you may surprise yourself.

Hi!

Sean and I are back too, after a year or so off. I've missed nanoveling! Write-in in the West Island are a bit far for us sadly, but we'll happily make it to meetings downtown or accessible by metro. It'll be fun to see you guys again, and meet the new faces.

No specific ideas yet, as ever.

Hello everybody!
I was hoping to hit the boards earlier than this, but work has been pure Hell, and I've been busy with home renovations as well. I'm looking forward to seeing the old faces again, and meeting all the newcomers.

I am your co-ML for Montreal with Hendrik. I live and work in the West Island, so the majority of my Nano time and efforts will be spent there, but I do plan on trekking downtown a few times.

Feel free to throw questions my way, regardless of where you are geographically.

Gonna try again this year. I won the first two years I tried, but the next two each had major disruptions show up in the middle of the month that made it impossible to continue. Hopefully this year I'll be able to get back onto a winning track.

Hello fellow Wrimos~

I'm back for my second (hopefully also successful!) year.
I'm going to try to make some of the meetings, but I don't know how it's going to work out with midterms, finals, and all that jazz haha.

Good luck to all!

Hey everyone!

Apologies! I impolitely replied to a couple other posts before introducing myself! I'm here for the second year in a row. Found out about NaNo in mid-October last year. I thought... what the heck. I only have 2 jobs and 1 college class. What could possibly go wrong? *LOL*

To the newbies who are trying this for the first time, watch out. It's totally, totally addictive. I wasn't ready when November 1st rolled around last year. Deadlines work wonders for me, though, so I jumped in feet first, eyes shut, fists clenched... heart and mind teetering on the edge of panic. I had a very basic idea, but nothing else. Still, I wrote, wrote, wrote some more. I'd always been one of those "one day" novelists. I decided... something's got to give. Somehow, I found time. I found words.

50381 words later, I was a winner (on November 30 at 18h or so).

If you need motivation, try this: http://lab.drwicked.com/writeordie.html
It got me through countless moments of "oh, it's ok if I don't make my word count today, isn't it?" and "... but I don't know what to write next!"... Annoying sounds in particular work really really well. If you think it's no big deal, wait for the screaming alien babies. GAAAAAAHHHHHH! MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOOOOOP!

This year, I'm trying something different... AN OUTLINE! *LOL* We'll see what happens!

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE! It's going to be another wonderful-crazy-stressful-exciting month!!! :D
