Anyone have any ideas for write ins in this area?

Last year the only one I remember was in the Farmington Hills Public Library, and I think there were only 2 or 3 near the end of the month, and at most about 3 of us were there. I'd like to meet more of you guys, so does anyone have any ideas?

Libraries are good because if one of us has a library card (extremely likely, as we're all probably avid readers) we can get a group room, where we don't really have to worry about noise levels. They allow food and drinks in the rooms too, and of course there's internet access. The only problem there is I think most have a time limit (but they can be extended if no one is waiting for the room), and I think most close between 6 and 8 pm. Plus I know that the group rooms in the Farmington Hills branch are kinda small; if we're lucky to get one of the larger rooms I think it only comfortably seats 6. The small rooms in the paperback section really only hold 3 or 4, and it's kinda claustrophobic. D:

But it'll probably be easier to schedule a larger group of people in a restaurant or coffee place of some type. Does anyone know of any places that might be willing to accept a larger crowd for a longer period of time?

Well, since I'm currently working in Farmington.. and if its during the week I'd probably join up... though I'd think panera on Grand River near Shiawasee would rock. Its a really nice panera. The servers are nice. Best things about panera... you can get a cup and stay there all day with free refills.... though they'd probably like you to also buy a bagel or something.... second best thing is free internet. If you honestly need a drink to write.... coffee or pop, or tea for that matter... panera.

I think they are decent on plugs... I'll have to scope more carefully... the other one I visit frequently is 12 and halsted.. its not bad the corner is nice and cozy... but i like the service at grand river

I'd be up for a weeknight mon-thurs

Great! ^^

I've seen listings for write ins at Panera, but I don't know where any of them are in this area. But the one on Grand River sounds like an idea. I THINK there's also a Panera on Orchard Lake near 12 Mile... but I'm not absolutely positive, as I've never been in one, much less that one. XD It might be something else... I think it's also a kinda small place... I'll have to look for it next time I'm down there. Plus that intersection is kinda scary sometimes. D8

I'm open every afternoon/evening except Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, I have class/family obligations those days...

This sounds great! I'd definitely be up for all Friday write-ins and some weekend ones. :) I think the Panera you're talking about might be closer to maple and orchard lake.

Also, we could always just plop ourselves down at OCC campus... I don't think anyone would mind particularly. XD

If anything gets put together in Southfield, lemme know. I could conceivably make it to one in Southfield.

OCC would be great as well, I go to the Orchard Ridge campus, so I'm there most days. XD

But the only place we could sit that I know of that has internet access would be the Cafeteria... the Studio Cafe is filled up with the Gamer's Alliance most days and nights, and in there all the brick and concrete make it hard for you to get an internet connection. Same with those tables around the corner from the Cafeteria.

Thursday afternoons I can do, but I have stuff after 6 those days. Fridays and weekends are just peachy, though. :3

I don't go into Southfield often, but those who are in that area a lot could scout out some places we can work. ^^

Hadhafang:

They didn't last time I checked, and in the Studio Cafe you can't even get a cell phone signal unless you're near the doors, so...

Of course, I haven't really tried to connect in any other place other than the Cafeteria and the Library, at least not since the beginning of the summer. They might have changed that recently, I don't know.

The way the buildings have been designed it's hard for the signal to travel well. :/

1. For Oakland, would anyone be interested in the sunday afternoon write in at Panera at Telegraph just south of Orchard Lake?
Its got lots of space and plugs. In the past we have done sunday afternoon 4-8. Does that sounds good?
Would there be a better time and day?

2. I also wanted to know if anyone wants to do a write on a weekday morning? Near pontiac/waterford/lake orion?

If there's a write-in somewhere in the Farmington/Novi/WB/Southfield (possibly) area, I'm in. I go to school full-time and I work one or two evenings a week, but if there's a way for me to get there, I'm all for it! The Panera at Grand River and Shiawassee is an awesome idea (and I'm not just saying that because I live very close to it) - it's a really nice place and we could probably sit for a long while.

I'm all up for Fridays, and I could make some Tuesday/Thursday ones but I'd probably fall asleep with my face against my laptop. XD So I'd show up, but you guys would have to keep me awake. XD

Both Paneras are fine with me.

I can do Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

So right now it's looking like Fridays?

Sounds good to me. Just as long as I know when, so I can take work off (I am NOT letting them take another of my Friday nights, hmph), I'll be all set. :)

The Farmington Hills public library gives preference to people who hand them their special Farmington Hills library card. They'll take other library cards, but only if FH people don't want the room. They reserve the right to kick you out the second that a resident wants the room.

Hopefully the rest of you will have friendlier run-ins with the FH library staff.

Not to be super-negative and dis the library, but I felt compelled to warn you.

Oh, I know that. We had that problem last year, we ended up in one of the more public rooms waiting for our turn for about an hour. We didn't get kicked out, though.

I have a Farmington Hills library card myself, so if I'm there (or someone else with a card is) there won't be a problem like that for us, at least. ^^

I had my card [entire wallet] stolen... so I don't think they'll just take my bar code... I have a West Bloomfield card as well, but like it was said earlier, they give preference to Farmies. :)

They should issue you a new one, although I think it costs you a dollar or two. I think you just need to go up to the desk and tell them you lost your card. And I think the SHOULD take your bar code, if you know it...

As i am unemployed like half the world....UGH i'm pretty opne to whatever....my suggestion is for Panera or Tim Horton's at 12 mile and halsted. As i stated im open, afternoons and nights are best....we've got a week (give or take) to get organized. i'll check up later of course:)

Getting organized would be a good idea. ^^;

I looked through the posts, and we have 3 people who can do Fridays. Everyone else is scattered around, doesn't have a preference, or asking for Sundays (two people).

I personally vote for a write in on Friday afternoon, 2-5, at the Panera on Grand River near Shiawasee.

K-T Plaza
34635 Grand River Avenue, Farmington, 48335
(248) 888-7922 | phone
(248) 888-8109 | fax

We could always organize another one if people can't necessarily make that day, but I'd like one on Friday. Since Sundays had the most out of any other day of the week, how about then? We can do a different Panera, like the one on 12 Mile and Halsted someone else mentioned earlier. So, what do you all say? :3

This is the Panera on 12 Mile:

Twelve Mile Road
37611 Twelve Mile Road, Farmington Hills, 48331
(248) 324-4402 | phone
(248) 324-4406 | fax

Or, you know, somewhere farther away from me. XDDD;; Votes?

I enjoy the Tim Horton's idea... 12 mile and Farmington, right? I'd love to be there! I could maybe make it to the Grand River Panera... but it'd take me a good hour in just back-and-forth travel. :)

What about the Farm. Library?

Times
2-5 isn't really a good idea.. People who work can't make it.. I'd say 6-9 or any times including time after 6 with at least a couple hours...

Locations.

My preferred is any panera. The food is good. The atmosphere is good. VERY laptop friendly. Lots of plugs, free refills. Free internet.
Library... okay, but you have to prebuy and carry in your drinks... Also I'd be coming right from work so I'd also have to find food first..
Tim Hortons. First Tim Hortons on 12 and Farmington has bad service and bad food. The only thing good is the doughnuts... I've not been in the building recently so I've not survey'd the plug situation.

I wouldn't mind buying food before coming in. I could buy you some too and you could pay me back at the library. ;)
The closest Panera to me is the one on twelve and halsted.

How about Starbucks? I've never done a write-in there before. There's one on 12 & Orchard and another on Orchard between 14/Maple. :)

I had the location wrong for the Tim Hortons...its Farmington not Halsted. Not a fan...just putting ideas out there. 1st choice personally is Panera...and for simplicity's sake....both Shiawassee, and Grandriver can get quite hectic and confusing at times. So...My choice is Panera at 12 mile and Halsted. If need be i can do the Orchard and Maple location. Second choice, ecspecially if we want later hours, would be Starbuck's. There is one at 12 and Orchard, Maple and Orchard, and 12 mile and Telegraph. Keeping in mind folks that most people, think of coffeehouses as their first place to write....(i.e. they are typically more crowded)....Oh and if we want something different, i know the Quisno's at 11 & Middlebelt has Wi-Fi. ANYHOO>>>>my 1st choice is the Panera at 12 mile and Halsted. All afternoon & evening , hours open, and just so you know, i am writing, by hand, so i wont need a laptop...etc.
Um,...maybe against better judgement, my phone is 1(734)765-2125 ....hey at least its getting somewhat narrowed down!

12 and halsted panera isn't too bad.. one of the managers knows me... just don't go to the mcds there...
I think there's a bigby's somewhere near 12 and orchard, though i'd have to review. Bigby's isnt big for lunch so I've not looked for them. (work at 12 and farmington so i'm always looking for lunching places :)).. bigby's > starbucks in every situation... Starbucks charges for wifi, bigbys free. Could get hairy for me if i can't sync my novelling from my ipod if I've done some. I can't sync that with the cord it has to use the wifi... i know it sounds weird....

Anyway, most places close around 9ish so..... 5 or 6 to 9 isn't too bad for school folks and work folks

I'm pretty sure there isn't a Bigby's at 12 and Orchard... there's an Einstein Bros, Jimmy Johns, and a Starbucks there, I know that. There might be one a little down the road, though, I'm not sure. I usually turn left heading to school (I go to OCC), so I see the bagel place and coffee shop every day, but unless I'm going to Burger King or something I rarely head towards 13 mile.

The Quiznos at 11 and Middlebelt is an idea, they have a decent sized area and probably enough plugs. And yes, they do have wifi. :3

The Bigby's is at Northwestern and 14 mile. But ive never been in there. Oh and not to confuse issues more....there is a Potbelly's at Telegraph and 12 mile or 14 mile an Orchard ...ish. I know its around there. So in order...my choices are... Panera @ 12 mile and halsted / Quisno's at 11 mile and middlebelt / or either Potbelly's. I would thinkl that Potbelly's or Quisno's would probably be the emptiest. Foodwise i like Potbelly's better than Panera. But im flexible between the 3 places, and im available anythime. So I'll check back in a few days....the 1st is quickly approaching.:)

TIME TO START VOTING!!! It is now the 28th. With that in mind, we need to narrow our choices. My suggestion is we take a vote and decide on a main place, and an alternate. I think its time to vote. So here goes...everyon PLEASE pick your favorite location. Our next step will be to work out the times. But meeting place decided first. So HERES the list.

1. Panera @ 12 mile & Newburgh
2. Panera @ Orchard Lake & Maple
3. Panera @ Grand river & Shiawassee
4. Bigbys @ Northwestern & 14 mile
5. Bigby's @ Novi rd. & 11 mile
6. Starbuck's @ Orchard Lk & 12 mile
7. Starbucks @ Orchard Lk & Maple
8. Starbucks @ 12 mile & Telegraph
9. Quisno's @ 11 mile & Middlebelt
10. Potbelly's @ 12 & Telegraph
11. Potbelly's @ 14 & Orchard Lk

So everyone please pick your top two choices. BTW i do not know the crowding/space/Wi-Fi of all the places listed. Everyone please pick your top 2 chocies, and then we can we can narrow down times. We are starting to run out of time on this issue.

So my top two picks are
Panera @ 12m & Newburgh
Potbelly's @ 14 & Orchard Lk
