I know many writers create special soundtracks for their novels. I haven't gone that far yet. I do have a certain mix of music I like to listen to when I write.
Have you ever created a soundtrack for your WIPs? If so, do you go as far to create one of individual characters?
This year I think my writing soundtrack might be composed of mostly Fall Out Boy songs, mixed with a bit of Blue October and a dash of Coheed and Cambria. It will set the certain tone I'm striving for with my novel.
Feel free to post examples of your writing soundtracks in the comments.

When I'm actually sitting down and writing, I can't listen to anything but if I'm "writing" on the treadmill, you better believe that I'm listening to something. I've killed characters with opera, disco, heavy metal . . . you name it. And no, I'm not going to tell you what I listen to because it'll make me sound really, really old. :-)

Gosh, yes! :D All my playlists have multiple performers, but certain performers fit better with one character than another. Lucky Raven's playlist is largely comprised of music by Nuno Bettencourt and his bands over the years. Zane Greywolf's playlist is mostly the Canadian Mi'kmaq Rock band, Forever. Fox and Sawyer Redman's playlist has Jon Bon Jovi, Kenny Rogers, Eddie Rabbit and Steve Earle. I'm still working on a playlist for Cutter's Revenge, this year's Nano novel, but I'm sure I'll come up with something. :)

Anything with a hard-driving music line. Celtic punk, usually, at least to start. I also range around into alternative, country, and Jimmy Buffett when I need a break from all that. But man....I HAVE to have a soundtrack. That reminds me; I need to start searching the shelves at the library here for the new stuff.
*edit* I recommend playlist.com if you really need music going in the background.

I am a bit like Shay..no Fall Out Boy but lots of Blue October and some Coheed and Campbria..realy liking the vibe of Silversun Pickups at the moment. Also reaching back for some Freshman college tunes for inspiration as I write out this outline. I have been playing with the idea of having a theme for each major scene in the story - the emotional backdrop if you will, we will see how that works out..lol

Heh, yeah, I've created a couple of soundtracks for characters. (Note: They contain extremely sappy love songs. And if my character knew I told the world about his love for Alanis and Avril Lavigne, he would beat me up. XD)

I can't listen while doing the actual writing, but I plot and get into scenes with music. What is on my playlist usually depends on what I'm writing.
The angel story I just submitted was Enigma's "Sadness." My rock star story was born from Disturbed's "Meaning of Life" and I listen to a lot of Korn and Disturbed while working on it.
For Nano, I'm looking at Apocolyptica. I think the cellos will work nicely with my hero, Charles. I'm not sure about Lily's music yet. Some of the recordings Metallica has done with symphonies are possible for her, as is Godsmack's "Serenity".
I'm still looking for music for the character torture portions of the story.

Gosh Shay, your playlist sounds like mine! Ahaha I've got my own spiffy playlist made up on playlist.com and then some more saved by other users on there. Its a big variety, but the biggest number on there is definetely by Fall Out Boy (nobody say anything, they saved my life and your opinions on them won't change mine ;D). Lots of Panic! At the Disco, MCR, The Used, Say Anything, Cobra Starship, Cute is What We Aim For, Kimya Dawson, Death Cab for Cutie, Matt and Kim, All Time Low, Hey Monday, The Maine, The Cab, Forever the Sickest Kids, Envy on the Coast, a smattering of Paramore, Jack's Mannequin...And some of the best, the classics: Pink Floyd, the Doors, the Beatles (!!!), Paul McCartney, Elton John...yup yup ^^
