On Sunday, November 22, the staff of the Office of Letters and Light (the nonprofit that runs NaNoWriMo) is throwing a gala fundraising event in San Francisco. The Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon will be six hours of writing, eating, drinking, writing, eating candy, and listening to inspiring words from NaNo founder Chris Baty. And writing. Exciting gifts and raffle prizes, too!
Last year, NaNo participants flew in from across the US and Canada, and even from as far away as Australia, to take part in the Write-a-thon. Here in the South Bay, we're lucky to be located in convenient carpooling distance to the event, so consider raising money to attend.
In order to reserve a seat at the Write-a-thon, you'll need to raise or donate $200, all of which goes to benefit OLL's awesome programs. Using the GiftTool fundraising site, you can set up a personal sponsorship page to direct your family and friends to. Now it's time to hit up everyone who's ever asked you to sponsor them in a walk-a-thon! You can donate some or all of the money yourself instead of fundraising, but note that contributions made through the Donation Station don't count toward the NoWD $200.
Write-a-thon attendees who raise $300 can bring a guest along. This means if two NaNo participants choose to team up and raise money together, they only need to collect $150 each.
All the event details are here:

Feel free to post in this thread if you're raising money for the Write-a-thon, have questions, or want to find a fundraising buddy. As the date gets nearer, we can coordinate carpooling from the South Bay.

As anyone here who has participated in past events can tell you, this is GREAT fun.
Check out the pics from 2007 and 2008.
This year's venue looks really elegant.

So, who all is planning to go to the NoWD, considering it, or trying to raise enough money? I'm going, and I should be able to drive a bunch of people with me in my minivan.

I'm going as well. My dad not only offered to babysit my kid, he also donated a bit. He's so cool. (That, or he's having second thoughts about inviting me to stay with them for a few weeks.)
I'd gladly chip in gas money for a carpool, but i've also scoped out CalTrain/Bart options in case demand outstrips supply for carpool seats.

I'm in. Probably won't drive this year, so I'll need a ride, although if a group of us do the Cal train thing that might be fun as well.

I would love to do the Caltrain thing, but when I looked into it last year, it wasn't workable with the train times, and it's probably even worse on a Sunday. (checking schedule) Yeah, last train south leaves SF at 9:15, so that's not going to cut it. Alas!

Eek. My iPhone app didn't show the difference between saturdays and sundays. I guess i'm definitely in the market for a carpool...

I just thought I would post and say that I've raised my required amount and have been reserved a seat!
Yay... now back to those pesky words...

Is there an MO for the carpool? Does everyone meet somewhere and go from there?

Yep, we'll pick a spot reasonably convenient for the carpoolers and meet up there. We'll talk details next week.

I got a reminder that one week from today, on November 18, all fundraising must be completed and all donations must be submitted. That means you have one more week to raise your $200 and RSVP for the Night of Writing Dangerously. So if you've been considering raising/donating money for this but haven't made up your mind or shaken down enough of your friends for donations, it's time to get moving!

Yikes! Really sounds like fun, but $200 seems quite steep for one evening. And the 18th is coming up so fast. What to do!!

This is why you con other people into putting up the $200. Er, i mean... uh, sponsoring a charitable event. Yeah. That's it.

Hi, I just got confirmation that I am going to the NoWD... the trouble is transportation. I can get there fine on public transportation (I'm a college student in Santa Clara, with no car). It's getting back that's a problem. The only route I could find means I'd have to leave a bit early and take like three trains and two buses, buses at like 1AM. Which I'm not so excited about.
----------So if there is anyone willing to carpool back down by SCU that would be amazing!

I am starting to coordinate a carpool to the Night of Writing Dangerously. So far I know that skneal, silea, and SpringsAwakening are interested. If anyone else wants to carpool from the South Bay, drop me a NaNoMail. I have a minivan, so I can take more people (though if it's just the 4 of us, I'll drive our smaller car instead).

I'll be driving up from the Sunnyvale area. I have to be there by 4:00 to set up the Storyist table, but I'd be glad to have company.

If I can get a ride, I'd be able to chip in gas money. My car's making funny noises and I'd rather not risk getting stuck in the city. :p I'm in San Mateo (near Hillsdale Mall) and can meet up by any of the near Cal-Train stations. Send me a PM if you have room in your vehicular device! :)
and I'm really excited about this, too! :D Can't wait to see you all there!!
