Hey, guys!

I'm Katie. This is my first year doing NaNo, and I am reeeally excited to get started. November can't seem to come quickly. I'm seventeen years old - a senior at Richfield High School - with plans on going to Winona State next year.

Since this is my first year, I think it sort of goes without saying that I don't know the majority of people in my area. I noticed we didn't have a topic in our region for getting to introduce ourselves, so I figured I'd start one myself.

Here are a few questions that might help you along:
1. Your name, obviously. Also your age, if you'd like.
2. Where you're from.
3. What made you join NaNo?
4. What's the hardest part about writing for you?
5. What are you into besides writing?

Personally, I'm doing NaNo because writing used to be something I was veeery passionate about, and then my schedule got to the point that I sort of just didn't have time for it anymore. I HATE that I've lost touch with something I used to love so much, and I guess you could say this is sort of an attempt to rekindle the flame. The hardest thing for me when writing is staying committed to my work. I don't have the world's greatest attention span, so it's reeeally hard to finish a lot of the projects I start. Especially novels and stories. So this should be interesting.

I'm a founding contributor on http://everygirlblog.com, a webzine targeted at girls 14 - 24, and I love it sooo much. I'm also a massive Harry Potter fan, to mention just a few things I'm into.

Okay, now your turn! :D

Well hey there Katie =) I'm Stacy, but most people call me Ninja and/or Kitty (and yes, this applies to real life). I'm also seventeen years old and am hoping to get into either University of Minnesota (Moorhead), Ringling (Florida), or University of North Dakota. Needless to say filling out all these applications has become bothersome.

I'm from Ramsey County in St. Paul, around West 7th street. I heard about NaNoWriMo from a buddy I used to talk to on Neopets back in 2005 and have been doing it ever since. It's really fun and I love creating these crazy, cracked-out stories, though my character development could use some work. I hope to rectify that this year =)

Outside of NaNo, I am a typical Senior student who enjoys video gaming, programming, drawing, Swing Dancing, and acting like a 10-year-old child. I am a super nerd when it comes to Batman, Transformers, and the Halo universe. I also like to cosplay and go to conventions like ComicCon.

Well, this seems harmless enough...

1. Your name, obviously. Also your age, if you'd like.
I'm Matthew. I just reached the ripe, old age of 30 not too long ago...

2. Where you're from.
I grew up in St. Cloud, where I was the ML for a couple of years. But a job change brought me to the Twin Cities a couple years ago and now I live in Hopkins.

3. What made you join NaNo?
I have no freakin' clue. I found it while searching for ideas for lesson plans and immediately decided I had to do it for no other reason than it was there for me to do. The website said that I, too, could write a novel. And, dammit, I was going to.

4. What's the hardest part about writing for you?
Being cloy with my reader.

5. What are you into besides writing?
Well, my daughter, for one. Her well-being is my day job. Other than that, my wife and I march in a drum & bugle corps and I captain a team for KVSC's annual 50-hour Trivia Marathon.

1. My name is Stephanie Griffith. I'll be 31 years old in an hour and 15 minutes.

2. I was born in Wild Rose Wisconsin but I grew up in the Northeast Minneapolis area.

3. I joined NaNo with some friends from the Simple Living Network. I love to write. I've been writing as a hobby since I was a little kid. I did technical writing for a while professionally but I hated it. I have a blog at www.sunnysideuplife.blogspot.com and I'm a contributor at The Sunny Way, a bright green environmentalism website.

4. The hardest part about writing is finding quiet time. I have three kids, ages 5, 4 and 4 months. Luckily my husband is really supportive and gives me a lot of time to write.

5. I'd like to start a bookstore for people who like to overthink fiction. We'd have discussion groups and debates about things like Vampire Rights and How to Fight the Zombies, The Basics of Time Travel, Jane Austen tea parties, Burns suppers (yes, I know, that's poetry, not fiction, but I'm the hypothetical owner. I'll do what I want) and other similarly interesting events. Hmmm. What else? I have a million hobbies. I like to read, cook, bake, embroider, sew, knit, crochet, hike, swim, bike, volunteer and travel. I want to learn photography, pottery and sailing in the next couple of years. Hobbies have now crowded out paid employment, which I was never really suited for anyway.

Hello, everyone! I'm so excited to be back here again! :)

1. I'm Heather, which is kind of confusing, but I've been using my Dejana alias for everything online for over a decade now and it was still a habit when I signed up here, heh. I'm 28.

2. I live in Woodbury, but I'm originally from Duluth.

3. I want to be a writer. Really, really badly. I've been writing fun hobby things like fanfiction for years, and a lot of my online writing buddies do NaNo and spread the word to me. It's a great chance to make some serious progress on original fiction, with the added bonus of lots of great local writers to meet up with. :)

4. The hardest part, for me, is staying motivated. I burned myself out a few years ago and since then it's been an uphill struggle to get started on anything. Once I get a few words going, I do okay, but the initial act of sitting down and starting to write feels like a worse chore than washing dishes. :\ Write-ins are a great remedy for that problem. :D

5. My other big problem is I'm interested in way too many hobbies. Aside from writing, I read, I sew, I make costume props, I build websites, I play with graphics and videos, I run an online fandom community and I travel to conventions. I don't get a lot done because I can't force myself to drop any of my projects. NaNo's a big help there, too, since I have to focus on writing for an entire month. Even if I don't do much writing for the rest of the year, at least I'll get 50K every November. :)

I can't wait to get started!

4. Not stopping midway because the beginning sucks

This is a good post because i find that not enough people fill out their bios and then i don't know if they're male or female.

1. My name is Sarah and i'm 28 (man the years go fast...)
2. I grew up in Vadnais Heights, but i currently own a house with my twin sister in White Bear Lake.
3. I've been toying with the idea of Nano for a few years, but my job recently let me start to work at home, so now i have a lot more time (as opposed to spending 3 hours a day in a commute) so this year seems like a good time to jump in. Also i've kind of stalled out on my existing novel so this will give me an excuse to try something new (or at the least it will get my family off my case)
4. oh i don't know. I think different areas are hard at different times. I tend to hit a stall out point about 2/3 through a piece if i take too long so that's a problem. Also staying motivated and not getting distracted by things like blogs and video games.
5. i'm into a lot of nerdy things (video games, comics, cartoons, movies etc) I'm also very into dogs and other animals (once, long ago, i was pre-vet)

1. Hi everyone, I'm Kyle, 26 years old.
2. Currently live in Columbia Heights. Was born in Fridley, have also lived in Spring Lake Park, Blaine, and New Hope.
3. Why did I join? I've been an aspiring novelist for a couple years now but could never push myself to write everyday. I first did the challenge last year and, while I didn't win, I wrote more words that November than any other time in my life. It was just the push I needed. Since then I've continued to work on that novel and am looking forward to starting a new novel this November. I will also be much more prepared this year with an outline, etc.
4. The hardest part is telling myself to write everyday, even if what I write is just crap. :)
5. I have a wife of nearly 2 years, a 5 month old son, and two dogs. I'm a huge film buff, love the video games (especially the Halo series and rpgs), running, tennis, watching the Twins, home improvement, reading, camping and sleeping past 9am.

I just introduced myself on the "Yay! Nano's back!" thread, but I'll go here as well.

1. Your name, obviously. Also your age, if you'd like.
2. Where you're from.
3. What made you join NaNo?
4. What's the hardest part about writing for you?
5. What are you into besides writing?

1. Tracey. I'll be 21 in twelve days.

2. Crystal, MN. Born and bred. Apart from the college dorms (Northwestern College in Roseville) it's the only place I've ever lived.

3. My freshman year of high school, the editor-in-chief of the literary magazine at my school (I was on staff) told me about it and the next year I gave it a shot and was hooked.

4. Keeping stories going, I guess. I have tons of ideas for all parts of the story, but I'm terrible with figuring out how things will end, or once I do figuring out how to get the story to that end. But I'm taking a Story Structure class right now and it's helping a lot with that.

5. Tons of things. I'm a broadcast major, and radio is fantastic. I have a show on the student radio station once a week. I'm also in the top choir at my school, I work as a stage technician which is an amazing job, I love to cook, play piano, spend time with my dogs or my rabbit, do photography, and plenty of other things besides. I just launched a new blog called "To Put It Bluntly". And I've got lots else going on that I won't get into here.

3. What made you join NaNo?
4. What's the hardest part about writing for you?
5. What are you into besides writing?

1. I'm Hema, and let's just say I'm old enough. :)
2. I grew up in Canada, but I've lived in the Twin Cities for the last seven years.
3. I had an idea that was begging me to write it, and I just needed to force myself to actually do it, and NaNo seemed like just the thing. I tried last year, but ran out of plot and energy at about the 10,000 word mark.
4. Writing realistic interactions/dialogue between characters, and somehow fitting that into the plot of my story. It's harder than it sounds.
5. Lots of things...sports (of the spectator kind), music (I used to play violin) and right now, by almost two-year old son. I also write really bad fanfiction. ;)

1. Nell Morningstar
2. born in Boulder Colorado, lived for 10 years in Cleveland, Ohio, then various places in the east, finally settled here in south Minneapolis
3. I stumbled on Nano in 2002, a few days before November 1st, was charmed and intrigued by the idea, and jumped in.
4. The hardest part is keeping at it even when I am not crazy aboout my direction/idea/characters etc.
5. I am a dollmaker/puppetmaker/photograper/filmmaker, wife and mother of 4 children (3 already out of the house now so less time involved there). I am also searching for a fulltime job. I currently work in a contract. temporary position as a costume technician.

Hello, all!

Lee, but Evergreen works. I'm old enough to know how to use a manual typewriter. ;)

South of the river.

3. What made you join NaNo?

I've always been fascinated by language. A chance encounter with Arika Okrent's In the Land of Invented Languages indirectly led me to http://wiki.frath.net/LoCoWriMo, which pointed me to NaNo. Yes, I'm doing LoCo with an as yet half-baked conlang (constructed language) of my own. I think another three or four conlangers are also doing both events this year.

Quote:
4. What's the hardest part about writing for you?

Just getting it on screen (or rarely, paper). I have a tendency to want it perfect first time, so I end up editing too much too soon.

Quote:
5. What are you into besides writing?

Conlanging and languages in general (ASL in particular), camping, bike tour (non-race) events, digital photography, learning to play the keyboard, non-work-related software programming, and shiny obje...

Sometime later...

Any of these are even better when I get to do them with my family and/or friends.

I'm Eli (despite the name, I'm a girl-type). Age is just a number, really. And my number is 31. I live in the Longfellow area of Minneapolis.

I started doing NaNo in '02. I'd had a reading done at the Playwrights' Center, and the feedback was a bit harsh, so I was looking for a good way to avoid rewrites. A friend pointed out NaNo to me and said, "Write a novel for a month. That'll keep your mind off the play." I keep doing it because I lack self-discipline, and a 50,000-word boost every November helps me keep writing the rest of the year.

For me the hardest part of writing is keeping the plot moving. I can write dialogue and setting and inner monologue for thousands and thousands of words, but nothing ever *happens.* And then I get bored. And stop writing. And that sucks.

When I'm not writing, I'm riding my bike (cursed snow! Snow!), crocheting, reading, chasing my cats around, or scheming my next steampunk undertaking. I also just started taking a belly dancing class; no idea if that's going to become a consuming passion or just a thing I tried once.

PetiteFadette says hi.

Hi there :) I'm Kalyn, and I'm 21.

2. Where you're from.

Originally Green Bay, WI, but I lived in MI, CO, and NE before moving to MN about five years ago.

3. What made you join NaNo?

A good friend of mine mentioned it. I was intrigued, finally signed up, and have been doing it ever since (that was in 2006).

4. What's the hardest part about writing for you?

Getting from 30,000 to 40,000.

5. What are you into besides writing?

Well, I work a full-time job so I should probably say that. I'm also into playing the violin (been doing it since I was 8), video games (if anyone's into L4D on X-box live, send me a message and we'll play!!), and reading about a book a week or so.

My boyfriend is a really good writer. We were gonna both do NaNoWriMo last year, but he got mono, and fate decided I looked too happy and needed to be messed with. This year, though!

I'm not really a writer. I don't have a terribly good vocabulary, and writing just isn't what I do. I'm not bad at it, I'm just not.. very good.

I love to draw--comics are my real medium. I make video, I knit, I cast metal, I table-top game (testing out a home-brew system right now. Exciting!), I go to school, I lurk in forums, I lurk moar....
I do all kinds of things.

1. I'm Kelsey, 16.

2. I'm from Coon Rapids, never moved. My family might be moving in a year or two, but hopefully that'll be once I'm off at college.

3. Two years ago, my brother mentioned it. We tried a bit and failed. Last year, I was just trying to beat him (he stopped at 12k, so I ended at 14k). This year, I actually want to finish to prove to myself (and him) that I can do it.

4. I hate anything I write or create. No matter how much time I spend on it, I hate it. Once I mention my idea to someone, or start thinking it over again for how to advance the plot, I'm like, man, this sucks. Then I just feel like an idiot for spending more time on it.

5. Music and horses. I'm in every music related activity I'm able to join and I'm trying to get time to get private lessons for an instrument or two. I've loved horses since I was young, and after getting my padre to like them, we finally bought one that we keep up in Halma, MN (about 40 minutes away from the Canadian border). We're up to two, so we can both ride when we go up there, but we've already had two die from freak accidents.

1. Erin

2. I am from Lakeville/Farmington.

3. An old, old friend of mine discovered Nano in 2001 and I decided to try. I lost interest in my novel that first year and did not complete it, but when it came around next year, I decided to give it another shot and have been doing and winning it every year since!

4. The hardest part about writing is motivating myself to do it. Especially when I need to research. I actually never write outside of nano anymore. Nano is exactly what I needed to force myself to complete a draft.

5. Besides writing, I work as a medical assistant and have three cats. No kids or SO at the moment but I am hoping to meet someone eventually. I love to read and have a huge collection of books. I also like to participate in theatre; I just finished a play and hope to get into another one soon.

*On a side note, I want to say that last year was the first time I got up the courage to attend any write-ins and it changed my whole Nano experience. Even if you are shy or creeped out by meeting internet strangers, I highly suggest you try to attend a write-in. It is awesome to nano with other people in public and it forces you to focus on the computer screen, which is good if you find yourself wandering away to do something else at home.

I agree. To be honest, I'm looking forward to the write-ins and things just as much as the actual writing itself. I've missed the feeling of community that comes with NaNo and I can't wait to have that back.

Hi!

1. My NaNo name is Hoop, but please call me John ('cos that's my name). Age is Forty-something.
2. I just moved from the NW burbs to Minneapolis proper (NE neighborhood, not far from U). Originally from Duluth.
3. My best friend Matt did NaNo and told me how much fun he had with it. I tried it out the next year and had just as much fun. This year will be my fourth (completed '06 and '08, not so much for '07).
4. Hardest part of writing for me is just sitting down and doing it. I have ideas galore, but the actual act itself can be daunting.
5. Besides writing I enjoy geo-caching, going to the movies, reading, hanging with friends, spending time with my partner. Have really been into British television lately: As Time Goes By, Doctor Who (classic and new), Primeval, Torchwood.

The bulk of my reading selections are Auto/Biographies and Memoirs and I am working on a memoir project. However, for NaNo, I'm committed to write only fiction...that has been a challenge! ("You mean I have to make stuff up???")

My (boring) blog is at www.jamesdeanlovesjoeorton.blogspot.com. If anyone would like to have a write-in in this area (like at Wilde Roast, for example), let me know!

Hello All!

I'm Kiernan, but most call me Kiera. I'm 37

I'm from a Galaxy Far Far Away... oh WAIT wrong opening credits LOLOL
Really, I'm from farther north that the Metro, but I call St Paul home now. Just bought a house this year!

Wanted to join NaNo because I've got all these stories rolling around my head, but no motivation. NaNo is a challenge that I am pretty sure I can do. I love to read, love to write. Also the community here seems pretty strong. I look forward to meeting people at write-ins, and am definitely hitting at least a few stops on the writers crawl!

Motivation's a big issue with me. I have a 9-5 job, several pets, and this new house thing to keep me busy.

Other interests include tinkering around the house, hanging with kitties and the dogs, reading, watching movies, boardgames, Munchkin (and other card-based games), DDR, and keeping up with the news.

3) Why are you doing NaNo: Kicks and giggles? I'm not really sure. I tried it last year, and wrote myself into a corner. I've never been a writer, but I've always enjoyed coming up with stories in my head. I figured this would be a good challenge to get them out of my head and onto [virtual] paper.

4) Hardest part of writing for you: The writing part. When the story is just in my head, I can ignore the parts that don't make sense, and skip the boring parts. Actually thinking through the whole thing to make it hang together, without my self-delusion holding it together, is hard.

5) What else are you into: Reading, computers (for fun and profit), games, hanging out with my wife, and in the words of a friend of mine, quiet moments of self doubt.

1. I go by Ctraeth on the forums and Dolski in real life. I recently turned 20.

2. I'm from Green Bay, Wisconsin, but I'm in Minneapolis for college. Little did I realize that I was merely exchanging one cold, isolated Midwestern city for another!

1. Hi, I'm Kelly, I'm 46 and new to NaNo this year.

2. Grew up in south-central Minnesota but have been in the Twin Cities (mostly Minneapolis) for 20+ years.

3. I've been writing bits of stories for years but never finished anything. I recently decided to re-commit to writing and thought NaNo would be a great opportunity get the words out of my head and down on (virtual) paper.

4. Not getting bored and/or disillusioned with the story I'm working on. I haven't been big on outlining and organization in the past so I'm trying the Snowflake method with my Nano idea hoping that will help.

5. Dogs, nature/wildlife, photography, fantasy and science fiction

1. My name is Amanda. I'm 25. :)

2. I live far enough north to not really be considered in this area but people north of the cities are lame in that they never come on these forums to reach out and form write-ins and such.

3. I like to write. :)

4. Taking the time to do it. XD

5. Photography, graphic design, web stuff, video games, being a nerd. XD

Hey everyone!

My name is Kelly and I live in south Mpls with hubby and three kids. This is my second time doing nano - the first produced a draft that became several other drafts that received several "close but no cigar" letters.....which inspired me to write another book which was purchased by Little, Brown. So my novel comes out next year, and I'm super excited. Trouble is, they want another one - two others, actually, so I need to get going on a new draft. Hence, nano.

I also write children's nonfiction books and short stories, and sometimes I teach through the Writers and Artists in the Schools program.

With the kids, I don't get much of a chance to connect with other writers. I'm hoping that nano is a good place to start.

Cheers, all!

Kelly Barnhill

Hey ya'll I'm Sarah, 24. I'm from Saint Paul, though I've lived all around the twin cities.

NaNo is an exciting challenge, that's why I'm drawn to it. Plus it means I have to get out of my house and go places! As Erin says, Write-Ins are SO much fun. I sorely miss those late nights on Lake Street at Denny's. :P

Hope to meet you all soon!

Hi Everyone, and thanks to Katie for starting this topic.

1. I'm Theresa, nano name Sapphirestar, and along with Nell, I'm ML here. I'm 45, with a DH and 3 kids (high school and college age), and this is my 7th year doing Nano, 5th years as ML.

2. I live in South Minneapolis, and grew up in the northern suburbs.

3. I joined Nano because I found out about it on the Momwriters forum, and so many women there were so very excited about Nano, I knew i had to try it. I was lucky to find out about it early enough in the fall to buy and read Chris Baty's "No Plot? No Problem!" (which I HIGHLY recommend, especially to newbies. Chris is a NanoGod). And also, that year I went to the Twin Cities Book Festival in October where Chris was speaking and signing his book. That really got me excited about Nano.

4. The hardest part about writing for me is that I don't prioritize it enough, so I often will do everything else I need to do or think I need to do, and then I don't get around to my writing. And that makes Nano so important for me, because for one month, I make my writing the ultimate priority, and lots of other stuff can fall by the wayside.

5. I'm also into my kids, working out and recently, running, reading, gardening, cooking, children's lit, movies, environmental issues/green living, music, art... ignoring clutter...

:-)

It's been fun reading everyone's intros... I suppose I'd better take a turn.

One of my goals for this year's nano is to make it to a write-in and get more involved in the forums, in spite of my oh-so-writerly contentment away from the crowd.

I'm Sarah... my fascination with Isis traces back to a college trip to Egypt, hence the silly nickname... and I just turned 30, yikes! Originally, I'm from the middle of nowhere south Dakota (town of 300, class of 7... seriously!) Now, I live just north of St. Paul Last year I jumped in on the challenge so that when I turned 30 a few months later I could say I had written a novel.... This year, I'm looking forward at a chance to shut out the storied "inner editor" again... it crept back with intense vigor around March!

I have a hard time carving out time to write. I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old that fill my days with fort-building and puppet shows. Essentially, I can write during naps and in the evening, but too often I get sidetracked..

Other than writing, I enjoy vegetable gardening, tending my five urban chickens, yoga, talking politics, and blogging at www.growingwithgirls.blogspot.com (a mom blog) and www.everydayinklings.wordpress.com (an aspiring writer's blog)

It's lovely to meet you all!

1. Liz, 35
2. Minneapolis
3. I heard about NaNo at work and it sounded like a good challenge (I love a good challenge). I always loved writing when I was younger, but I have not done it in a long time. I am excited to jump back in!
4. The hardest part will be figuring out a story line that has not been written yet. I really don't want to write about vampires. I gotta figure something else out fast. I am going to have to find a way to kick start that creative mind of mine.
5. I also knit, read, and love world travel.
