Hello one and all! Your Ballard drunken write-in coordinator is here! I have absolutely nothing to update you on, other than to let you know that we will indeed continue our traditional weekly drinking and writing blitzes at the Olde Pequliar, there will indeed be prizes for word wars, and it will indeed NOT be on a Tuesday evening.
That is all for now. Back to your novel research, your plot building, and your forum surfing.

I'm not a Ballardier but I still like the Drunken Write-in, so I'm going to try to host one on the Eastside this year.

Not sure yet, but I can rule out some days for you:
Monday is the official Ballard non-drunken write-in, I think
Tuesday I've got another commitment (go Rainbow City Band!)
Thursday is when everyone else goes out to drink, so rowdy crowds to avoid
Same with Friday and Saturday.
So it will probably come down to a Sunday or Wednesday. But I need to get myself into the OP to talk to the owner about when she thinks it will be best for a large group of writers to come in and gobble up several tables, and preferably not be forced to suffer some sort of sports event being projected over their heads on a big screen.

I'm a newbie and would love to attend drunken Ballard write-in (for the nerves ya know). Wednesday or Sunday work for me.

I just moved to Ballard from LFP and I'm so excited that the write-in location is walking distance from my place! What time do the write-ins usually run?

It's usually 6 to whenever, and people are definitely welcome to come early if they like. The pub food is pretty good too, so it's easy to get there early and eat your dinner and hang out before wiping off your greasy fingers and going at the word wars. I know I'll be late for the first one (stupid month-end close, stupid accounting job) unless we go with Sunday, but I bet peanutga11ery will step in and greet everyone and hold the fort down till I get there.

Mondays, 8pm, please :-) I'll probably be at the OP anyway, and go to knitting at 6, so I can still do both and not worry about being able to go with kids, since I'm a single mom now (and Mon and Tues I am kid-free, but tues is trivia (boo!))
Not sure I'll be able to do this this year, need a job... but hopeful.

Monday can be the drunken one, since lately I'm at the OP at 8pm anyway, and that's the only "sure" day for me that isn't an event day at OP. I am not sure I'm going to do an all ages one this year, too many things to do.
Please monday? :-)

I really clueless when it comes to sports, but isn't there such a thing as Monday night football? I don't know that we would be happy there if there are games playing on all the screens and big crowds of sports fans hollering.

Yep. Monday Night Football. It is a big thing. For some. Not me. I think Wednesday is great, if you do. I can walk to the OP from my house, but I'm a light-weight when it comes to drinking... so maybe I won't be able to walk back? (I could put the hubby on call.)
Keep us posted!

So, Sunday or Wednesday for the OP? I vote Sunday! I'm off most Mondays and I like to have recovery time :o)
I'm making a very concerted effort to actually finish this year so, I'm searching for a good spot to lug my laptop and write at during the day. Any suggestions? I'm still getting to know the neighborhood but I really like Verite (mostly for the cupcakes) but Aster serves beer and wine! Oh, the choices!

Pleased to make your acquaintance. I'm a Ballardite but I don't care for tavern atmosphere. Starbuck's is more my style. Or how about our living rooms? Do I go start my own thread? I'm totally new at this....

I second or third that motion... I keep walking by the OP and seeing the big screens full of sporting events and the folks getting rowdy...
Anyone game for this:
I think that the Aster Cafe, which is usually empty, has both coffee and beer and wine. It has great tables and chairs and lots of outlets, plus free wi-fi. It's on 24th Ave in the bottom floor of that new Condo building (which also has a pedicure/manicure shop- so you can get your toenails done while you're writing?) across from the former Ballard Library and kitty-corner from the old QFC-soon-to-be-the -new-QFC-plus-hundreds-of-new-condos.

I'd be up for joining you all, too. This is my first NaNo, so also my first Drunken Write-In! Woohoo!
I'm thinking Wednesday at the OP, as Sunday nights are also NFL games, in addition to Monday Night Football.

The Aster Coffeehouse sounds fine to me.
I don't have the focus necessary to write while in the presence of TVs, so the Olde Peculiar is a non-starter for me. If they show football games its even worse. A lifetime playing sports left me with a Pavlovian response to the sound of whistles. Makes my heart race, and fills me with the urge to knock someone down. Not good for a writing group. Or is it?

Fyca where did you go? Are you organizing Ballard? Or are we no longer united? Is there anyone else besides Aivuk and me who are interested in Aster? What night, if so...
I'm not used to writing in a "public place," but with a glass of wine, I may be able to get past the fear.

I'd be down! I live north of Greenwood/almost to Bitter Lake but can get to Ballard pretty easily. Bars with sports aren't good for me for writing, either, because it reminds me of work (ask later).
Friday and Saturday are the only ones definitely out for me. Every other day, I'll miss one at some point during the month, but should make more often than not.

So. At least three people are up for drunken write-ins, sans TV at the Aster Coffeehouse in Ballard. How does 7:30 until closing next Wednesday sound as a starting point? I'm just throwing that out there. Tuesday is the only definite no-go for me.
Cheers,

I may come down to Aster on Wednesdays when I'm not working until 8. I'm still interested/excited for the OP since the drinks are much cheaper than Aster ;o)

I can do Wednesday 7:30pm until ? at Aster. I can't imagine that a glass or two of wine there would cost a fortune. I'm also sure that wine at the OP would be pretty bad. (I love my wine almost as much as my coffee...)
So- let's try this out on 11/4. If we like it, we can continue...

Fyca is my real-life buddy as well as nano buddy.
There is MNF on Mondays, but that is the only day I can do it (besides Tues, which Fyca can't do). As my boyfriend is often at the OP on Mondays (he does like the football) I am therefore claiming mondays for OP. If anyone (fyca included) wants to set another day to write, either at the OP or not, you are welcome to it :-) Many years now only fyca and noneko and other sporadic others showed on the OP nights (there were about 4 regulars and others who came and went) I'm going to stick my neck out. Bring headphones, we use them during sprints even on non-football nights. The jukebox can be loud. Don't count on being able to plug in, either--it all depends on which table we get.
Last year I went to the write ins even though I had to drop out of nano thanks to my ex being fired... but I'm going to give it a go this year, and I don't have childcare any other nights but mon/tues.

I'm here! I'm alive! Just having minor mental freakouts that have complicated my ability to organize anything.
I finally called the OP tonight and asked about their most quiet nights. He was quick to say Wednesday and then said Sunday's were pretty quiet too (I guess despite the football?). But those who know do agree that Sundays would be hell. So, Wednesday night it is!
I am still set on a Sunday event, so maybe I will chill at Miro then or find another Sunday event.

Ann, even if the OP doesn't pan out, I'd love to actually see some sort of regular write-in for Ballard. Aster (along with the original idea, if that actually ends up working) sounds fantastic, though I couldn't tell you what night.
Regardless, ANY sort of write-in in the area would be awesome.

Katenator- (I hope I spelled that correctly;-)
I have an email in to Aivuk (hope that's correct, too...) to see if we'll still go to Aster on Wednesday. If it works- we can keep it up for the duration. (except Nov 18 for me- I'll be out of town) Is there another night that is good? Anyone else?
I'm personally more comfortable in a quiet and less distracting atmosphere when writing. I know Hunter S. Thompson did fine in Las Vegas, but I'm no Gonzo writer!
