May be in the 50+ group, but I prefer a lounge chair on the beach to a rocker, so my first week will be in Cancun. Soak up some rays, fill up my mug with Pina Coladas and pour out my story on my laptop. While not attempting to attract attention, I always get people asking why I'm working on vacation. I explain Nano to them and they give that 'oookay' look before heading back to their own beach chair. Some check in here and there to find out how I'm progressing. Even had people come up to me to say their spouse told them I was a writer. I've gotten into some pretty odd conversations over my laptop screen. Here's to another great start, out of my rock, and off it too.

I envy you. It's always been a dream of mine to spend part of a northern winter some place warm, where I could walk along the beach, wiggle my toes in white sand, pick up a shell or two, and then go back to the hotel for a massage.

It sounds a whole lot better than dripping Ireland!
At least I don't get distracted.

Sounds wonderful, but here in Minnesota we're already on our second snowfall of the year. November may be shaping up to be a good month for nothing else than staying inside and writing next to the fire! Enjoy the sun!

Hey! THAT'S what I'm talkin' about! My motto is: Even a bad day at the beach is better than a good day anywhere else.

As a mermaid, I could be just a tad biased, I suppose........ (wink) How lovely to spend November in a warm clime......... :::sigh::: And the only rockers I'm interested in are the ones who make music!! =D

Dont 'forget the sunscreen!

The closest I ever get to rocking is on one of those . . . . . ummmm. . . . can't remember what the darn thing's called now. . . oh, yeah, an elliptical machine!

Okay. So I don't use one of those. My favorite device for torture and a good time besides is the treadmill. . .

And hey, Mer!

My daughter LIVES in Modesto, CA too! She goes to the Modesto Junior College there and is finishing up her pre-nursing program. She keeps threatening to do NaNo and maybe she'll give it a shot this year too.

Thanks for the kind comments on my original and first topic thread: New Yes New No

Talk soon.

For now I'm off to catch my bus to school.

Oh! "Rocker" like ROCKING CHAIR!!! When I read the thread title, I thought that it was going to start out being about how you're not one of the sex/drugs/rocknroll-types! I thought you might like country music! Otay!!!

All of us must be off our rockers in order to be here, or else all the world must be, because they're NOT here.

That was my thought when I first saw the thread title, that "rocker" referred to Pete Townsend or Mick Jagger.

Reservations made, tickets bought, bags halfpacked, I'm chomping on the bit to get my toes in the sand, drink in my hand and laptop whirling away words under the sunny breezes of Tulum.

As much as I like to be somewhere else to kick off Nanowrimo, I really need it. My emptynest has been refilling and there's not a quiet spot to be had between grandkids and great-grangparents. Someone told me two years ago I'd have 8 people and 4 dogs in my nice quiet house, I'd have slapped them upside the head. But over the last two years people have been showing up at my door, first parents needing the security of other people around as their health gets worse, then kids caught in the housing debacle.

So, I'm leaving the 30'somethings to take care of the 70'somethings and <14er's for 10 days, well deserved. Then when I get back I'll have to find other excuses to be out of the house as much as possible, every writing event I can find in Phoenix. Maybe I'll update this page from Mexico, describe the weather and sandy beaches for those stuck at home.

PS, Ireland, I considered coming back but not this time of year. My bashed up knees barely survived my last Oct/Nov in Ireland, but I loved every minute of it. I'll be back when the weather won't freak out the arthritis.

But Ireland is so inspiring. If not for bashed up knees that HATED oct/nov weather, I'd considered jumping the pond for my change of scenery. I think Ireland is one of the most beautiful places I've visited. Definately on my list to go back, but I think I'll try Summertime. I've managed to kiss the Blarney Stone, so I won't have to climb that obligatory tower. Afterall, you can't call yourself a writer, visit Ireland and NOT kiss the stone. Of course no one told me about getting to the top of the castle. My bad knees freaked, but thankfully I had some pretty good arm strength and pulled myself up that rope. The people were so welcoming to the american woman traveling solo. The countryside was dazzling, especially when the sun made its appearances. The sites were stirring spiritually, feeling the flow of history and legends at every turn. It was a visit FILLED with experiences I'll always remember.

So Deccydiva, if not for the time of the year, I might of opted for a little house on the Irish coast to do my kickoff. Enjoy your Nanowrimo in that wonderful world of yours over there.

Three years ago when I moved into this condo - a downsize to enable me to retire in '07 - I bought two Stressless leather recliner chairs for the living room. The damn things are just collecting dust. One of these days I'll send them off to the consignment furniture sales store to sell, and replace them with regular chairs that take up less floor space. And if there's any money left over I'll put it in the fun and travel account.

So far since early 2007 I've been to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Peru, Thailand, England, and various points in the USA. I'm un-retired, got an offer I couldn't refuse and anyway I learned I need some structure and work in my life so I might as well earn money while I'm at it. But travel is now a priority, I spent ten days in London last month and have booked another week there next spring. And I'm planning some US road trips since there's so much of my own country I haven't seen at all, or only visited long ago.

I've definitely been the oldest participant at the Denver area NaNo write ins I attended last year, but the youngsters were nice to me and I appreciate that. :)

I love rockers! Good ones, anyway. I travel a lot as well; we move between mountains, beach, country, city.

I saw the tag line and thought it meant no rockers as in no sex/drugs & techno/rap or something. (Surely everyone likes Buddy Holly & the Beatles!) Randy Travis is good too, though. Though I shouldn't give the impression I am very musical; I'm not. I like to dance and am always looking for cheerful music for perk up purposes, otherwise I don't think about it at all.

I know I 'm an aberration.

I am also conservative but my genre is SF/Fantasy. I never fit anywhere.

My first time doing this - attempting it, anyway. I am setting aside my real stories to see if this is helpful. I don't know that the word count is going to be a problem. Of course, my story will be utter guano. But we'll see. Guano can be useful, I understand.

Welcome to Nanowrimo, this is my fourth year, hit 50K twice, plan to do it again this year, barring distractions. That's one reason I like to hit the beach for my kickoff. I also do Sci/Fi, though it's called Space Opera, as it deal more with the human characters than the time/location.

As far as the Guano, you never know what will pop out of your head. I let things ramble around in there all year, while working on current project(s), hoping to come up with a useful topic. Once you think you have one, write furiously, with no regard to quality. Just get as much of the story out in this ROUGH draft, as possible. In Dec you can start editing to see if you can make it sellable. I've got one sitting in the drawer from a prior year, waiting for an ending, waiting for me to finish another project I Nano'd. The other two were Guano, but one yeilded some stuff I could use in another project, because that's the direction my mind went between Pina Coladas.

So, no rocker, but definately alcohol, music, a chaise lounger under an umbrella... Leaving Tonight. YIPEE!!!!

Now why would you do that? Bub sand and summer time drinks into the raw flesh of us who have already seen snow this season? Hell, I'd write all day long if I could do it on a beach in a tropical clime. But seriously now...best of luck in your ventures.
