At the suggestion of Glenn (what username is he running around here under, anyway?) and Oure Moste Wonderfulle ML...
In this topic, post songs, artists, CDs, soundtracks, whatEVER it is out there that you think makes good writing music! Because writing music is awesome. And I always like new suggestions, both for writing purposes and because I like ear candy. :D Also, if you're looking for a specific type of song to help you set a mood, feel free to ask for it here.
-The soundtrack to the video game No More Heroes is awesome; there's a lot of rock/metal stuff, with some techno splashed in for fun, and a LOT of thumping base. It's great motivation for writing action scenes, and ESPECIALLY good for completely-off-their-rocker villains. Most of it is either lyricless or has nonsense vocalizations, so if you find lyrics distracting, it works well. A few, but FAR from all:
--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FN5HG0Ww0A4&feature=related Oxygen Graffiti (Did I mention all the songs have weird, awesomely nonsensical titles like this?)
--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSfbb3WHClE Pleather For Breakfast (I've actually been using this song to "get into the mood" for one of my non-NaNo villains, a psycopathic cyborg evil investor. :P)

--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs-SxiWXS8Y&feature=related Mach 13 Elephant Explosion
--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP3DFYVsQN8&feature=related Vioectrolysis
-Both a video game soundtrack AND a standalone album, Terry S. Taylor's "Neverhood Songs" is full of great, catchy folksy guitar/oompah tunes with utterly nonsensical lyrics, most of the time. Due to their strange, silly nature, they're the PERFECT music backdrop for writing comedy, and otherwise really "lol wut" scenes.

--http://gh.ffshrine.org/song/2612/21 The Weasel Chase (Especially good for weird slapstick scenes)
SINGLE SONGS (Warning, here may be lyrics):
-For a triumphant heroic character: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw2KOHRjia8 "Mighty Little Man," by Steve Burns (Fun fact: The writer/singer is the old Blue's Clues guy. Who knew he could rock?)
-A song for a perservering character: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LNvZpkQzKI "Another Believer," by Rufus Wainwright
-For trying to be awe-inspiring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSgiXGELjbc "A Glorious Dawn," remixed by Melodysheep
-Creep-them-the-hell-out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfJs0gtiwhA&feature=related "Subconcious." I have no idea who the artist is, because it's in Japanese.
-Nonvocal: For a hint of esoteric, European mystery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj51i-Smo1U "Theme of the Diabolical Box," from Professor Layton and te Diabolical Box.
-Nonvocal: For when things just need to be SAD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyIQHDpJ0R8 "Abandoned Memories"

Whew. That is one LONG post. I'm not gonna lie: I checked out "Mighty Little Man" just because it was Steve from Blue's Clues :) I'm listening to some of his other songs now, though, and I actually really like them! Who would've thought?
Great idea for a thread. I've been looking for some new stuff to listen to for NaNo this year. Last year I listened to Taylor Swift's new CD (Fearless) over and over and over again while I wrote. It worked out pretty well for me, because my story was mostly romance, but I definitely need something new this year.
Some artists that I haven't really had a chance to listen to yet but would really like to (wow, this is a terrible sentence):
Pomplamoose- http://www.youtube.com/PomplamooseMusic (they are really cool, and she has an awesome voice)
Tom Milsom- http://www.youtube.com/hexachordal (he's just... awesome)
Molly Lewis- http://www.youtube.com/sweetafton23 (she plays ukulele!)
Julia Nunes- http://www.youtube.com/jaaaaaaa (also plays ukulele sometimes... ukuleles are in)
Yeah, I'm kind of a YouTube nerd. In case you couldn't tell.
----------Anyway, yay for music! I can't wait to actually start WRITING so I can start LISTENING! :)

Personally, I am on a huge J-pop/rock kick having just come back from MLing the entire country of the rising sun. So... here's my current writing playlist with links to videos with some somewhat accurate english subs when available for you non-speakers. =) (subject to change as the month wears on and I grow sick of listening to the same stuff over and over):

I've found the Alone in the Dark soundtrack songs to be AMAZING. They're far more awesome than the game will ever be.
They're for SUPER EPIC, possibly dark-religious themed, medieval, fantasy moods.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbUVW2svtKM - The Final Gate
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F7BYZ5KGTw&feature=related - Who Am I?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95XDDSZlT08&feature=related - Loneliness
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56uCZ8MpnJk&feature=related - An End for a Prelude
Also, I found many Fantasia (the Disney cartoon against classical) songs to be quite inspiring.
Lastly... Songs from the films (that I haven't seen but love the music of) (ALSO, they're all fairly dark/sad/slow songs with the exception of the last film) "The Life of David Gale", "The Human Stain", and "Nicholas Nickleby".
"Eternity and a Day" and "Suspended Memories" from the Underworld Soundtrack too!

YAY MUSIC!
J-Pop is evil to me. It worms its way into my cranium and won't. Let. Go.
I have gotten unfortunately addicted to a song called "Mala Gente" by Juanes recently. It's all about how his ex-girlfriend should burn in Hell. Mmmm... Vindictive. And in Spanish!
