I've been waiting/hoping for a desktop version of Write or Die for a long time, as I can't always be online.
I bought it almost as soon as it came out, and it is terrific! I knocked out 1000 words in a half hour today, about double my usual rate. It was all decent stuff, too, no gobbledygook. The prompting of the screen turning red really helps block the daydreaming and on-the-fly tweaking of sentences that tends to lower my pace.
Save each session's work to a new txt file, or append it to a single long one, too. Pretty nice.
WELL worth the $10.

I've gotten my money's worth already as well. I love, yet hate, the honking horn sound file. I average about 14 hours a week in traffic, so that one is particularly "motivating" for me.
Note: the web-based version is still free for everyone to use. I think everyone should try Write or Die online at least once. The negative reinforcements work for me. My word counts are regularly about twice as high when I use WoD, than when I use Q10 or any other tool. I would recommend WoD to anyone who has either attention issues or procrastination issues. If you don't require adrenaline to be coursing through your veins in order to meet your daily writing goals (good on you!), you'll probably be left wondering what the big deal is.
Anyone who uses this program will still need some other program available for editing, revising, and organizing his material once it's written. I still use Writer's Cafe and Q10 for this. But my first draft and NaNo writing will now come entirely out of WoD.

I find if you REALLY want to get punished for not writing with this program, go somewhere you absolutely HAVE to be quiet. Somewhere like, school, in the middle of the night outside the bedroom of someone who is sleeping, then turn up your speakers all the way and put it on normal mode. Now if it punishes you, you truly will get in trouble! hahaha!

I love Write Or Die and got the desktop edition yesterday! Haven't used it yet because I've been doing artwork and getting ready for a Halloween party tomorrow, but I know I'm going to get my money's worth out of it! And I can't wait to use the Word War feature. Really hope that my roommate decides to buy it too so we can battle! :)

I just found out about WoD last week. I used the internet version, and it's fine. Love the productivity, and it helps me eliminate long pauses to figure out what I want to say. I wrote 2k in a little over an hour and a half. It would normally take me twice that long to write that many words.
If I continue at this pace, I should have nearly 10k in the first 24 hours of Nano.

As if I didn't already adore this enough - day one I decided to try for a goal of 6k. I sprinted the last 900 words I needed with Write or Die desktop edition, and then somehow managed to not copy everything I wrote to my clipboard before closing the window. Aack, of all the stupid mistakes to make. Well, today while I was poking around my hard drive looking for something completely unrelated, I found where Write or Die automatically stores backups, which means I just gained those 900 words back!
(Mac users, the files are automatically saved in ~/Documents/writeordie/)
So basically this is worth every penny I paid for it and then some.

This is definitely an awesome program. RIght now I'm mostly using it for the word count feature though. It's great being able to see how much you have left till you've finished in a progress bar like that. I've only had the alarm on it go off once, and that was because I honestly didn't know where to go (actually it was when I sat down to write, I had no idea of where I was starting at, or where I was going to).

I was hesitant to spend money on something I could get on the internet for free, especially when I already have a NaNo program (well, NaNo + academic writing)--Scrivener (which is worth every penny btw). But, I decided to buy it and am really pleased with its capabilities. It's much nicer than the online version. At the moment I'm using it to do the writing and Scrivener to keep track of where everything goes (which is nice, because it means I can jump around past the parts that have me stuck).

I think the twitter integration is the best, but I don't know if everyone is aware of that particular feature.
Attention all! Please use the twitter alert system built in WoD -Desktop Edition to find wordwar pals! Until the software is developed to include support for finding random match-ups automatically, I think that twitter is our best option for now.

So, Write or Die is going to win NaNo for me this year. It's an incredible tool for keeping me writing. Even if I don't really feel like writing, the pressure of Write or Die keeps me up to date and working. Even if you just go for a quick 10 minutes at a time, I can chug out at least 500 words in just 10 minutes.
I had a friend make an absolutely horrendous noise and recorded it, saved it as an mp3 and set it as my custom sound, if anyone is interested in using it in their Write or Die -- Desktop Edition custom sounds, let me know. It's extremely motivating.
