so the kick off was on sunday, and the turn out was excellent. we had more wrimos show up than in the other four years i've participated. most were new faces, which is great. mike (sorry, not sure of your username!) sent me a picture. it's posted on the phoenowrimo website (http://phoenowrimo2009.weebly.com). if you're in the picture, please email me at phoenowrimo@gmail.com with your username and which one you are so i can list you on the site. the only person that i know so far is rabidlars. sadly, i had a stomach bug, along with everyone else in my family, so i couldn't stay long, and there were no planned activities. but i hope everyone had a good time anyway. :)

the midnight kick off is scheduled for this saturday night from 11pm-2am. for the past few years, we've met at the ihop at central and virginia, but it seems to be too far for most of us. this year we will meet at the country boys restaurant at 35th ave. and cactus. it's located just north of cactus on the west side. if you reach sweetwater (heading north) or cactus (heading south), you've gone too far. in case you want to google map it, the address is 3508 w. cactus rd., phoenix 85029.

as i've stated before, the food is fairly inexpensive. they have a breakfast special for $3.99 that would be plenty for 2 people (or 1 very hungry person). drinks are 1.99, and they have coke products. i wouldn't recommend the ice tea; it has artificial lemon flavoring. i've never had the coffee, but if you really want to stay up to write, you'll risk it. they also have pie. i've never tried that either, but hey, it's pie. i have 2 for 1 coupons, so if you can't afford food, maybe someone will let you get a free meal on their ticket or even split the check 50/50. it does require the purchase of a drink, but only one. please be sure to bring at least a couple of dollars, even if it's only change, to buy a drink or tip the waitress. i chose this location due to their hours and their prices. the manager has been generous enough to give us the back area, so we will have more quiet and privacy than in past years.

there will be no outlets for your laptop. please be sure it's fully charged or bring a pen and paper as backup.

if anyone would like to stay past 2, you are welcome to do so. if you need to come late or leave early, that's fine as well. if you stay later as a group, please compensate your waitress. leave them with a good impression of nanowrimo.

also, anyone who comes in costume will receive a treat!

No outlets for the laptops really sucks... :(

My laptop MIGHT last two hours max. Probably not even that and I hate actually writing on paper. *pout*

This probably won't help for Saturday night, but just in case it would interest you... there are external batteries that you can use to extend your working time by a huge amount; the battery has a power cord that plugs into your laptop so that it thinks it is on wall power, and when the external runs dry you still have your two hours of internal battery to work with. The one website I can think of at the moment is www.batterygeek.net, but I'm sure there are other sources as well.

I don't have the money for one right now, but it's near the top of my shopping list. :)

I was bummed I couldn't make it to the kick-off party, so I'm looking forward to meeting up for the midnight kick-off.

No outlets is a bummer, but as I recall the IHOP claimed not to either, yet we were able to jury-rig an extension cord/power strip set up last year. Maybe if we leave extra nice tips we can manage something similar at this place?

2 more days, eek!

Hey, we're all a pretty sharp looking group in that picture! ;) I had a lot of fun that day.

I plan to be there for the Midnight kickoff if nothing prevents me. I haven't had to run my laptop on a battery since I got it, so I'm not sure how long it will last. This will be a nice little experiment, although it looks like 2 hours is about average.

I probably won't be able to make this. Sad! Considering my lack-of transportation to get to that area of town, it's not a good day for me. Ha. (..Halloween also happens to be ASU's Homecoming Game? So uh, I'll probably be the spirited little freshman and go do that stuff ..) But I'll be there in spirit, and I'll be attending the write-ins on Tuesdays and Thursdays when I can. (:

Unless something unexpected comes up, I should be able to make it on Saturday! I should also be able to go to at least some of the Tuesday/Thursday write-ins at Bookman's, since I don't have class on those days.

The kick-off last weekend was great, and I enjoyed meeting everyone who came. :)
