Hey Kids,

Any ideas on good places to write together other than coffehouses? I love me some latte, but I'd also love to colonize some other kinds of spots around the city...sort of like a floating poker game. Where do you get inspired? Here are a few things I'm thinking about:

* Behind the ferry building.
* Dolores Park.
* On someone's front stoop (once we know each other, of course!)
* Tempest Bar.
* Benches at the Lyon St. Steps.
* Public tables at a Mall Food Court.
* Silent Top Secret Write-in at a Top Secret Branch Library.

I think it would be neat to show up with laptops tucked under our arms and just get down to business wherever and whenever...who's with me? Where would you like to go?

If the weather is nice, Union Square is great. Free wifi and lots of people watching.
The Metreon supposedly has free wifi, though I've yet to tap into it. There are lots of tables on the first floor around the eateries where we can hunker down.
Various Borders. Union Square and Stonestown gets pretty filled up but I think the one in SF Center is usually pretty good on weekdays.

Great Idea Megan! I would love do to some of these, they sound fun :)
I prefer weekends, but if you set something up later on the weeknights, I might come as well

My requirements are as follows:

~ Tables and chairs

~ Free WiFi (or contingent on purchase of comestibles)

~ Available power source, if I plan on being there for more than three or four hours (which I often do).

As long as I can get these things, I'm happy.

U.

@Meg_C:

I like the stoop idea. Can't offer any in this far end of the RIchmond.

Hm. I miss stoops...

I love the idea of the space behind the Ferry Building. There's a bookstore adjacent. I find it very motivating to write among books. And there's the Bay and the nostalgic harbor right outside to transport you.

Speaking of Borders, there's a great little Barnes & Noble in Fisherman's Wharf, at Taylor & North Point, next to the Cost Plus. Inside the B & N they have a Starbuck's where they will refuse your tip.

Did anyone decide when to do this? I would love to do this. A flash mob for writing! How about this Saturday at 4 p.m. behind the Ferry Building, or in Peet's?

A fine idea that needs some fleshing out. Here are some suggestions that might be fun:

  • There are some handy racks of benches at the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park, between the Cal Academy and the DeYoung. With the underground parking, that makes it even a little more convenient for out-of-towners and those what need their cars.
  • Other city parks, such as Sutro Park, McKinley Square, Mission Dolores... pick your local favorite and bring a blanket or foldy chair.
  • Is there a group of Hornblower/Maturin novelists? How about taking over the benches in the middle of the pedestrian pier (I forget which number it is) next to Pier 5 (logic would dictate that it's Pier 7 then).
  • Or, there might be a nice compromise over near Java Beach on Judah. There's indoor cafe for them what wants that, outdoor tables for them wants those, a small park with benches just across the street (La Playa), and the whole of Ocean Beach for those that want to brave sand and surf and salt (it makes my laptop shudder).

Just suggestions to help re-kickstart this fine idea. I've been horrible about showing up to write-ins so far, but did desire to help in the conversation.

I think I can do the Peet's in the Ferry Building this Saturday around 4! That's a great space. I'm in!
Anyone else?
P.S. That is, either the Peet's or the space with tables & chairs just adjacent to it.

Thesaura--

It is 4: 10 pm and I'm off to the Ferry Building Peet's. Getting a later start, and will take 30 - 45 minutes on the 1 California. I'm wearing a black blouse and a sparkling barrette in my hair. Hope to see you and others! Haven't been there before, so don't know the Saturday hours, etc., but this will be a good field trip to find out.
