I don't know how many on here use multiple computers, but I know that I fall into this category. As such I generally save files to a USB stick to take them to my laptop or from my laptop to my computer.

However I found a new program that I thought might be useful to some. It's called Dropbox and it makes syncing files really easy. The program creates a directory wherever you choose (My Documents by default). Then anything you put in this directory is automatically uploaded to their servers. Then on your laptop where you have the program installed the files automatically appear in the folder that you have setup on that computer.

I have just tested it and it worked seamlessly. I edited my file from the dropbox folder, and almost as soon as I had saved the changes were available on the other computer. Works really well, just make sure you sync up before leaving the house to a place without wifi.

You can check out the app at: www.getdropbox.com/

Hope this helps somebody make life a little easier with two computers.

Anyone else out there have any recommendations on keeping your files organized and in sync between two different computers?

Dropbox is really nice and they also have an iPhone app.

I use EverNote for my story notes, plot, scene outlines, and store it on my USB thumb drive, but also have EverNote installed at home on two machines as well as at work. This way I'm able to get to my novel notes from everywhere, including my iPhone (EverNote has an app too).

For the actual writing, I use Google Docs because it has a nice word count feature. I do have to split out the novel by chapter because last year I hit the Google Docs file size limitation which is a lame, small 500kb. I can access Google Docs from work, my desktop at home, and in bed on my Acer Aspire One netbook.

I also do nightly backups of the manuscript itself to a USB drive, my FTP site on tekchic.com, as well as sending that day's writing to myself in Gmail -- this way I never have to worry about losing my novel, it's always stored in a minimum of 3-4 places.

Thanks for the Dropbox tip - I may use that as an additional backup/sync spot for the manuscript!
