How do you reset the word counter? Yesterday I uploaded approximately 868 words, today I should have had a total of 2177, but the word counter has come up with over 4000. I don't believe that I uploaded twice.

Are we only supposed to upload new stuff? Because I couldn't remember where I had left off, so I just uploaded the entire manuscript again.

Help!

You can just type the correct wordcount in the box at the top of the screen and click update and it will go to the right number.

You are supposed to paste the entire manuscript into the word count box every time. Sometimes it hesitates and people paste twice, causing it to be double-counted. It's possible that this is what happened to you. I'd say do it again, paste the whole thing in once and see if it counts correctly this time.

I just tried pasting mine in, and it said I had over 53k.
Word says it's still under 7k.

Um?

Wow. That's a big discrepancy. If you try again, does it do the same thing? I just pasted in a few different docs and it counted accurately for me.

Is it at all possible that you pasted multiple times because it took a moment to respond?

No, I tried it twice because I thought that's what I had done the first time. I scrolled to make sure, clicked submit and got the same WC.
So I'm going to avoid the insane word counter for now.

Well, I'm blaming the site backlog for everything else these past few days and I have been right... so I'm going to blame it for this too. I'd say try again in a day or two to see if it still acts crazy and let us know.

One thing that I should probably meniton is that I'm behind a corporate firewall/proxy that I think also made the regional e-mails function explode in a fantastic burst of spam.

EDIT:
Nevermind, the nano site Word Counter is not at fault - it was Evernote doing... some really wierd data appending & duplication when I uploaded a note from my iPhone. Apparently every edit caused the full text of the note plus the additions to be appeneded to the original note on the server. WTF.

I had about 3600 words yesterday and posted today's crop (should have been about 5200) and it registered 36,000. I tried reposting the new batch but it said someone else had edited my page and it could not be corrected. This website is apparently way too small for the load of traffic it's getting... what happens now? Apparently I am not the only one.

The easiest thing to do is just manually change the word count from any page up there on the upper right.

I've been doing this for years and can say that things are a little wonky in the first week every year. So just putting in the word count manually (without the robot counter) is just simpler and you get to spend more time writing or browsing the forums.

Though it's tempting to say that the website is too small, we've been handling 2 million page loads a day for the past three days. That's more than twice what we had last year.

The bit about the site saying that someone else had edited your page -- that's really going to be just because of the rapidity that you tried to update the page. You can update your wordcount now and it should be fine.

I'm having a different kind of problem with the word counter... On the first day, I was able to add my first day's total word count just fine. Now I'm want to update it and it just goes back to the first day count. I've tried using both the word count update in the upper right hand corner and the page on my novel info. Neither is working for me.

thanks for you help
