While all you exciting wordsmiths are out there bashing away with your rocket-fuel-powered minds and fingers toward your rocket-fuel-powered dreams, I have been taking it nice and slow.

I've just written my first word!

I chose the word "I". I'm very happy with this choice, for various stylistic and thematic reasons.

Rather than using the sanctioned word count schedule, this year I'm using the Fibonacci sequence. Which means reaching a total of 0 words the first day, 1 the next, still 1 the next, 2 the next, and 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 and so forth thereafter....

But don't worry. At this rate I'll reach 50,000 early on Thanksgiving morning.

(And I intend to write ahead of schedule!)

Well, I've written several words, not many more than that. But I've finally started writing! Not including the 90 words I scribbled yesterday or random notes. I'm pretty much trying to stay off internet and not count words until I feel like I have enough to count. Only a brief moment of internetting to pose a question to facebook friends (novel related, tangentially), and if I'm internetting, I might as well look at the forum to soak up some inspiration.

I was one of a whole bunch of people who had dark halls and stairwells earlier this evening. Anyone else have the pleasure? (power out? light candles! investigate dark corners! enjoy the break!) Especially with the dusks we've been having.

Unless you lost words to a loss of electricity. Then I feel for you. I will give you a spare word,. "Defenestrate."

I hope you've all had a fun and fine full moon, second day of November and now into third day of Nano.

I'm sorry. I can't read the word "defenestrate" because I started crying so hard when I saw "internetting".

I like the Fibonacci sequence idea, although day 25 alone requires you to enter over 75,000 words, so... yeah. Cheers.

Yeah, nice plan, though. Might impress certain people.

My wordiness seems to be coming along well. The fact that my chapter titles are overly long and have words that don't exist makes me happy, for some reason. Also, it makes me happy that my two MCs are currently trying to get people to sign their banana. They got the head of the Retirement Center to sign, but the stern librarian was nasty and wouldn't sign. Sniff.

And now I have to figure out who the spritz they're going to go to next to get a signature... I'll probably get an idea while doing dishes. At least, I hope. ^_^

It's a numerical pattern that relies on adding the most recent two numbers in the sequence to determine the upcoming number in the sequence.

So the next number in Thorin N. Tatge's pattern will be 34 (he'll get there next Tuesday), because 13+21=34, the next 55, and so on. This method is going to make Thorin N. Tatge's workload increase by staggering amounts each day. We must all feel very sorry for him. He is very brave.

Let us have a moment of silence for the brave Thorin N. Tatge.

I too am going slowly, mostly because I spent the last two days catching up on sleep after working five 8-hour night shifts, three 4-hour morning shifts, and one 7.5-hour day shift in a total of five days. Sheesh.

But today I am going to write, and do laundry, and write, and clean out my car, and write, and rake leaves, and write. Hoorah, exciting! Well, the writing parts will be, anyway.

Im glad I got a big head start, because as anticipated life in Tokyo caught up to me hahaha. Or I caught up to it? Today was 文化の日, or culture day, and was a national holiday, so I went to a wine tasting in Hibiya Park, went to check out the temple and saw a parade in Asakusa, and took a stroll through Ueno Park. And all of these are on the Eastern half of downtown Tokyo, and I live out west beyond downtown. XD And then I had a very long but delicious Italian dinner. YUM.

But all of this means I have barely written anything today. And tomorrow is class from 1-6, and then hopping straight on a train to go babysit until 11, and then hopping on a train home, going to bed, and getting up at 630 Thursday morning to go to class. But I might bring my computer with, since I have a mini notebook, and write once the kids go to bed. This is the hope.

And in the meantime, Id like to at least crack 10k tonight, or even 11. I have an hour and a half, but Im tired, so it might only be 10k. But thats not bad for the end of Day 3. XD

I'm struggling to keep up and it's only day 3. Still haven't found my flash drive, so I can't work on the novel at work. Tomorrow I think I need to bring my laptop to work so I can work on the novel between work and my pub quiz at Brit's. I missed it last month, so I really want to be there (they took 3rd place without me, and I was sad, but I was sick and couldn't go). But I'm already behind. I think it's because I'm bored with it. I've been spending the whole first chapter explaining the corporation (Mega Corp) that my main characters work for, and there really hasn't been any plot yet. Something needs to happen.

Elise just collected the lottery money for the week, though, so I have a feeling they're going to win the jackpot soon.

Last night was my first write-in at the Loft's coffee shop (and my second write-in ever). Great folks and great food (try the chicken curry wrap, it's filled with goodness and light and grapes too). We even got some sweet stickers.

I also pushed myself through the chapter of the book that I feared the most to write. It's the end of Act I and I wanted it to be rather explosive. It's the chapter that I wanted to have done more research on before writing it. But I knew that if I postponed writing it until today, it would be a long sticking point, so I hopped up in those stirrups and squeezed that baby out. It might be a premie, but it's still mine.

I am a little worried that the book might be a bit too short. There are definitely some places I could go back at the end and put more padding in. Anyone else getting this feeling too?

Lastly, don't forget to vote!

I tried to start a new topic yesterday advising that everyone slow down and rehash their plan of attack for scenes, character development, plot goals, etc but when I tried to submit it the browser lost all the work I had done because my wifi signal had sputtered out whilst writing.

Anyway, I spent the wee hours of this morning furiously scribbling away in one of the little notebooks I keep around. I came up with enough plot-advancing scenes and character development schemes to last me for at least the next week as well as seriously enhanced the actual plot itself beyond what I had done in the two or three days before Nov 1.

If anyone is feeling stuck in their story, then please ignore your word count goals for two days! Two! And take that time to go over all your notes, filling in the margins with plot twists and character conflicts and setting descriptions. I know the time I spent working on this stuff will pay off in dividends when I start writing tonight. Actually, I may not even write tonight. I might just plan on writing 3000 words on Friday night and spend time outlining more tonight.

Eh, I'm not doing too good. I've been struggling with writers block already (those at IHOP saw my pain, and NO, no explosions!).

Over the summer I worked at a special needs summer camp. I just found yesterday that a camper I had twice died. For some reason it really hit me hard. So yesterday I wrote about 40 words. I'm busy all day today, but I'm hoping things will come together tonight.

I took a two-hour nap when I got home from work yesterday, in addition to spending some time cuddling with my roommates' baby.
No words after 5 PM, when I left my work computer.

I trust I can catch up during karaoke and write-ins.

Haha, if that's really what you're doing, I love you. But it'll get pretty hard later, huh?

I've found that I have just enough time during my morning breaks to get 1667 words done. Actually, I've been writing 2000 a day. This is the (very) slight advantage of waking up way too early. Though I think my other early-bird friends think I'm anti-social now. Ah well, I'll be back to normal after November.

My descriptions are going well though I was hoping to be ahead before the weekend cause I expect 1 or maybe both days will have little to no writing time.

My fear is when I get to the next round of math I'm going to slow way way way ...way down. But maybe I'll just start saying things are really really really really really really damn big. That has a nice word count to it!

My laptop is still on the fritz, waah! So I have written next to nothing. My only other writing implement (other than a pen, paugh!) is my desktop computer at home, which sits in the living room next to the TV, which beckons me with World Series, NFL, Castle and other distractions. I am also in the process of shopping for a new(er) truck, which is a distraction, too.

FYI, take my advice and NEVER do business with Inver Grove Ford. Ask me sometime and I'll give you the whole gruesome story, but don't expect to be treated fairly, or even with respect there.

I wrote nothing yesterday. I am such a looser. But I was ahead from Nov 1....so I guess it evens out?

I am sad, however that I knew where I was going two nights ago, and now I have no idea. Dang.

Having a late breakfast (apples & cinnamon instant oatmeal and Elixir of the Gods, a.k.a. "coffee" in the vernacular). Busy day today: doctor's appointment, grocery store, write-in at Nina's. I'll actually get some words added before I have to leave for the doctor's office, and I really need to make the push; I've got classes this weekend at the Loft, so there's 16 hours I need to cover as much as possible.

Here we are on Day 3, and I'm a little behind my personal word goal (although the little graph says I'm on target so I won't freak out yet). So far my characters are doing exactly what they promised to do when they convinced me to write their story this year. I figure if they wanted it so bad they were willing to tell me most of the plot in September, I'd give them a chance. Main Character #2 showed up on schedule last night and has just learned that he is assigned to assasinate Main Characer #1 - but never fear, they promised me it would be a good long fight while they discovered just how evenly matched they are. They also promised no romance this year (their exact words were "What? Ew that's gross! Don't even think it! I need a bath now." So I guess it's not going that way. They also promised an interesting twist at the end but wouldn't tell me because it would spoil the surprise.

And now that I've shown all of you just how crazy I am, I'm off to sneak a few words in before the end of my lunch break.

At Andy - @ 4,298. yeah, that and you better get some more words before you go to the doctor, since you taunted me, again, you fiend. You knew I was trying to keep to 1,667 a day because of my wrists, and then you taunt me. I will make you pay! I am coming after you! (unofficially). And did I mention since you've got the week off you're supposed to be burying me, not just wandering around 800 words or so in front of me. I will go to your house while you're at the doctor and steal all your coffee. And maybe your alphasmart as well.

Hey, I know, why don't you wander over to writing 101 and read some of those posts. Looks like they need some guidance.

Oh, and of course I failed to mention, my writing partner in this "best of two" word count duel is Kateness, so you're going to die under a pile of hypergraphic outpouring of words. Unless you can find the name of that IT guy who "did" 500k last year.

Author author yawp yawp yap yap ooooga ogga me bungo you crush crush.

Most of my sentence in the story are coherent so far. Even with SVO. Most, that is.

Hey! Next time someone starts the daily thread, post the minimum word count, huh? Like today is 5,000. Tomorrow will be 6,667.

Hey Brian? With the handy dandy spreadsheet that you claimed to have, you too would know what the day's word count is without making someone else who's up at midnight post the number the rest of us already know. :)

Yesterday's writing went fine. I made myself write the 1667 for the day, even though I only needed like 500 to make the day's expected goal. I still haven't gotten to a full day ahead, since I got distracted last night by the baseball and football games going on. Yankees almost won the darn thing after being down by 6, and a former Iowa player got hurt in the Monday Night Football game. (Note to self: check on his status.) I'm only 200 words short of today's goal without doing any writing yet today, so 1800 words to be a full day ahead shouldn't be much of a problem. Especially without any football on tv.

I put an excerpt up, which I know is crap because it's all dialogue and one character telling the other about what everyone just read in the last chapter. But it's a better summary of what the book is and ties in the title much better than my synopsis.

I finally got a book I ordered back on October 15th yesterday, and it's been difficult to not let myself read it. It's currently sitting near my computer, taunting me while I'm writing. I need to find a way to reward myself for hitting a specific goal with that book.

Oh, and Thorin? If you're using the Fibonacci series, but writing ahead of schedule, are you really using the series?

Thank god for my Neo! most of yesterday's words came while waiting at the dr.'s office--including when I was actually in an examining room, waiting for doctor!

He looked a little surprised to see me typing away...I did put it down long enough to let him listen to my heart and tap my knees, etc.

Discovered have a slight fever though, and it's making it hard to concentrate, although I'm at work right now. shall mainline some frappucino and try to bang out a chapter if those dratted people will leave me alone...yesterday I kept getting interrupted by, you know, actual job stuff!

My assumption was that he meant that each number in the sequence represents the goal for his total word count on the corresponding day, ie by Nov 13 he intends to have no less than 233 words, and by Nov 24 he intends to have no less than 46368 words.

Since starting Nanowrimo, I've been having the craziest, most complicated dreams every night, worthy of being novel-ideas of their own.

Three nights ago I gave birth to a baby girl (I don't have children), and she turned out to be an alien, with special powers. The dream was all about how the baby girl interacted with other babies, and trying to keep her a secret from the government. And also soap-opera-esque drama with the baby's father.

The night before last I was a participant in some kind of Asian dough factory that was taken over by the government to make weapons and bullets instead of cookies and cakes, when they discovered our boss knew the secret to mixing light, unbreakable alloys (in her spare time).

Last night my dream described a family about to move to Texas, far from any city of note. In the dream, I was about fifteen years old, extremely resentful of my family's decision, and my mother was insane, loving the idea of living in a desert so much that she bought us all big colorful mexican abas.

Every time I wake up from one of these dreams, I feel as though I should immediately start writing my novel about the dream instead of my chosen subject. I guess excessive creativity has really gone to my head.

I've either sunk to a new low, or found a brilliant way to multi-task with my writing. I wrote about a thousand words tonight, but didn't really want to do anymore. I wanted to do a post for my blog instead. So I did, and then I did a copy paste into my novel. I just discovered that my MC follows my blog religiously. Not only did I get to add the words that I wrote for the blog, MC also commented, taking me above my word count goal for the day. I'm interested to see if she manages to find time to keep reading my blog once she gets busy trying to stop the Dragon of Chaos that wants to rule the human race.
