Hey Wrimos~
I'm looking for some advice on how to convince the Windsor library to let us do write ins for NaNoWriMo.
They seemed shocked and appalled that I would even ask to use their always-empty room for a few hours of writing. They said even if they did let us use it, they wouldn't allow it more than ONCE A YEAR. Then they whipped out a completely empty calendar, showed me the blank pages and said the entire month of November was booked. (According to the online calendar this can't be true).
Anyhoo -- how did the rest of you get your local libraries on board? Seems like Healdsburg doesn't have a problem with it... Any suggestions? Should I just walk away?

As far as I know, the library has to pay a staff member to be there while the room is being used. The libraries that are hosting write-ins this year are the ones who could do that.
However, if the Windsor branch has tables scattered around the library like we have in Petaluma, I imagine a group of you could meet informally. You could see if anyone wants to do a write-in there, through the forum, and if you get a few people, maybe just show up. I don't think they'd throw you out!
Perhaps Erin McGonigal, who works at one of the libraries, could add to this.

Hi All,
I'm the librarian in charge of the NaNoWriMo program in the Sonoma County Library system. This year is our second year hosting Write-Ins. Last year only one branch participated. This year five more branches joined us.
When we set up the program for this year I polled the branches to see who was willing and able to host Write-Ins. This was a new concept for the branches so we were happily surprised that four branches stepped up. Those that did not should not be judged harshly. The library system is under incredible strain right now. Staff is being reduced and we may have to cut services.
It is my hope that when the non-participating branches see how popular this program is and that it involves little expenditure in staff or money they will be persuaded to participate next year.
NaNoWriMers can help by going to the scheduled Write-Ins at participating branches. When it comes to library programming numbers count. Big Time.
Again, don't judge the Windsor Branch harshly. They are facing staff reduction and they really are good people.
