I'd love to hear anyone's definition of the above item. Yeah, I know, I'm a novice. Thanks.

How i define it is writing a bio about the character. A whole back story. Life history. Family. Friends. Secrets. Tics. Opinions. Anything and everything that makes a person a fleshed out person. Do it first person--easier for me, anyway.
Ex: My name is Character Study. i grew up in Los Lunas, New Mexico but i never tell anybody that because most of my overly large, super Hispanic family still lives there and somebody might find me through them. My dog Chip is the only being i ever confide in and he's nearly fifteen years old. Right now i'm shelving books at the city library but this creep that is the boss keeps....
You get the idea.

I once read an article that gave a series of exercises to do to create an in-depth character study. It started out with a lot of the usual things, such as family history and stuff like that, and then gave some other exercises, putting the character in certain situations to reveal how the character acts. For example, your character is just getting out of the bath or shower. How does he/she act? Does he/she like to dry off slowly or in a hurry? How does he/she regard his/her image in the mirror? OR, what is this character's biggest fear, and why? How does the character cope when faced with whatever he/she fears?

I once did an interview with one of my characters. It came out very surprising. I as the interviewer push my character to make emotional responses. It was probably one of the most rewarding character studies I have ever done.

Thank you all so much for your input. I'm certainly delving into my character's background, but I'm trying to balance out my story and this item witout going overboard, I guess you could say. There seem to be so many events that shape a person that I find challenge in deciding what to include and what to exclude. Thanks again - I'll have to come back to this subject.
