This may come off as a bit confusing, as it'll be difficult to ask this question without giving away too much of my story while at the same time keeping me from looking like an idiot fanatic.
My main character, whose gender will probably never be recognized because it's insignificant to the story, gets assigned a space mission by another worldly being. My character, a human from modern Earth, is brought through into another dimension where the creature lives. Their task is to explore this dimension, and do something for the being. This being gives the character the opportunity to have a companion. The being sayss they can choose anyone in human history, and they will "create" this person into the other dimension.
My character, thinking themself quite clever, picks The Doctor from the British sci-fi channel Doctor Who.
Now, I'm not considering this a "fanfiction" strictly because it's not following the story of Doctor Who. I also want to get some quick points across:
-There will be no romantic relationship between my character and the Doctor. That isn't the point of this story. Though I do plan to make fun of that expectation through out the story, it won't be done in a way that actually has the characters bonking. There will be a platonic relationship.
-Technically speaking, this will not be The Doctor. But rather, an adaptation of him. A recreation. I don't want to give away all the details, but the knowledge he has as a Time Lord won't contribute greatly to their voyage.
Now, my question to all of you, is what Doctor should I choose? I'm really torn between Tom Baker and David Tennant. The time period my character is from isn't specified, but I'm more aquianted with Tennant then Baker. Not that I'm opposed to doing research on either of their characters.
But who do you think would be the most fun? The most useful, or most problematic? I'm not necessarily looking for a Doctor that will be all buddy buddy with my character either. They will both be in very grim unsavory circumstances, and if they butt heads with one another it'll probably be even funnier.
So what do you guys thing? All advice is great!

Sylvester McCoy.
Seriously, I know that Four and Ten are the most popular, but Seven and Nine are just badass. If you're worried about research, you should be able to find episodes of any doctor after Four on the Internet. Plus Seven is an awesome guy to have to butt heads with.

I ask my good brother who is a bit more knowledgeable on the subject then me. All I got was "the one with the scarf." That is all I have.

I'm most fond of David Tennant. He is, in my opinion, the most emotionally engaging and the deepest of the incarnations. He really knows how to portray the tragedy of his life while still being the zany Doctor we all love.

Oh Nine was really good too! Don't get me wrong.
I'm aware that four and ten are by far the most popular, but I also picked them based on the fact that I like them more. I guess I fall into that statistic of fans. But that doesn't mean I completely disregard the other actors.
My character is also fairly young, and from what I've seen younger fans tend to favor Nine and Ten, but still know about Four based on his crazy ass shit.
But now I'm considering all of them. Except for Eleven xD I'm gonna have to really think about this.

i would say it depends on what you need them for.
i'd say the best ones to "get on with" at 5 and 10
----------4 is rather adventurous and would probably get into trouble
as would 3, but less, and he would be less fun, but more practical, and inventive
6 and 7 i would not choose persoanally, but some might
8 isn't really well known enough to choose, but you could pretty much invent his character from scratch.
9 is a bit broody and perhaps short tempered, but he get's things done.
1 is too old
2 some people are very fond of, but i always found him annoying

The best ones for "butting heads" I've always felt are One, Six, Nine, and maybe Three - One and Six are never going to want to be second in this pairing, Nine's pretty grim himself (in an awesome sort of way), and Three can be pretty opinionated (argued with UNIT quite a lot. And Two.) though also fun, in a less, um, wildly enthusiastic way than Four and Ten. I'm not sure I'd suggest One, though, if you've got a lot of action needing to happen; he wasn't exactly the most physical of the Doctors. Three knows Venusian Karate. Just throwing that out there. Flipped villains over his shoulder on a regular basis. It was pretty sweet.
Four and Ten have the same sort of "crazy energy" kind of fun, though each has a different take, and in both cases your readers will be able to recognize them easily. Two has something similar, though he's an older character (I'm very fond of him, but he isn't everyone's cup of tea). Also Six (I've noticed it's an "even numbers" thing) but he's also got too big of an ego for me.
Five is really a sweetheart. I'd vote for him, because he tends to get overshadowed, but he's rather a different sort of Doctor from Four, so maybe he doesn't fit what you're imagining. He can get angry when he feels a villain's or companion's behavior has really crossed a line, but he also gives off a sense of calm at times, too.
Uh, who'd I miss? Eight I wouldn't suggest, since he just has that one movie, and if you wanted more, you'd have to track down books or audio plays. Seven's pretty cool, especially in the later episodes, when he gets all manipulative-chess-master (though not everyone agrees). He could probably also fit your description, but I'm not so sure if he'd *work* as a secondary character - that is, not wholly in charge of what's going on.
So, in order, I'd suggest (in this order) Ten/Four (who you're familiar with may work best), Nine, Three, Five, Six, Two, Seven, One, Eight. Also, if you want a challenge, you could try making a sort of "amalgam" Doctor that's all of the above.
Um, yeah, let me know if you need any other help. :-)

Might I suggest that, since the person was told they could pick any person from human history, and they've chosen a fictional character, it might be amusing for the entity to recreate the actor instead of the Time Lord. This might also make things more challenging for your character, which is always good for plot. (Not to mention word count!)
----------You might be kind of veering towards GalaxyQuest territory there, but I'm sure it's doable.

That's a really good idea! Kind of reminds me of Bolt xD
I could imagine how even MORE useless the character would be, expecting to get the Doctor and you've got an actor bitching about their morning latte.
At this point, I'm actually leaning toward Nine. His great temper would be hillarious for interaction. But actually picking the character would be interesting to. I still have time to decide, but that's a great suggestion!

Well, I agree with JMorgan. Either the 4th or 10th Doctor, though the 9th is so ecentric that you could have boatloads of fun with him

Tennant without a doubt. The tenth seemed to be a bit more emotional, in my opinion. Not to mention, I think his semi-bi-polar attitude made him a bit more 3-dimensional. He's more handsome so there could be some better jokes and (if you liked) more disbelief that it actually was a completely platonic relationship. As I found out, it's best to stick with the ones you have more experience with and can personally relate to.

Tom Baker is the Doctor. All others are imposters.
