So, sometime between last NaNo and this one, I developed the habit of going to see live music. Now, obviously I'm trying to cut back on this in November, but there are some awesome artists coming through, so I've told myself that I can go to shows if my word count is on track to 50,000.
I figure there might be other ninjas who could use the occasional live-music-based break from novelling, so I'm going to post what shows I'm planning/hoping to go to in November here to see if anyone wants to come with. So far, I have not planned beyond this weekend.
November 4 (tomorrow): One Hundred Dollars at the Black Dog Freehouse on Whyte
A cool alt-country band from Toronto. I will definitely be going to see them, because I have already written the 6,668 words needed. Yay!
November 6 (Friday): Said the Whale and Hannah Georgas
To be honest, I would consider skipping this for the write-in if I hadn't told someone I'd be there (if my word count is at least 10,002), because I saw StW in the summer. But I haven't seen Hannah Georgas (who is awesome), and I might be able to go to the write-in after, so I'll probably be at this one.
November 7 (Saturday): Slates at the Pawn Shop
I know that aiming for three shows in one week in November is foolish, but I've been annoyed at myself for missing The Pack A.D. (also playing this show) since the last time they came through Edmonton. So I will be at this one, even if I have to lock myself in my apartment and turn off my internet for several hours on Saturday to get the needed 11,669 words.

I'm working Edmonton into my novel, so maybe I could do both. Going to a live show would serve as inspiration!!!

Ok, $100 was fantastic last night, but between the fact that I was at the show when I could have been novelling, and the fact that I'm not getting much writing done tonight due to sleepiness, I don't think I'm likely to go to Said the Whale tomorrow.
The good news, of course, is that that means I can go to the write-in.
Since some ninjas might be unfamiliar with the bands mentioned above, I made a playlist with some of them. It starts with $100, so you'll know what you missed, then it has a couple songs from each of the bands playing tomorrow, so you'll know what I'm about to miss, and then a few songs from SLATES and The Pack A.D., so you'll know what I'm going to go see on Saturday.
Diabeditor, it would be great if you could come to SLATES on Saturday, or to something later in the month. Same goes for anyone else reading, of course. I will definitely be posting more shows I'd like to go to once I figure out which ones those are. I'm certainly open to suggestions, too.

I think I've heard Said The Whale, but not the others. Unless I'm confusing them with White Whale (who I definitely have one album by) or some other Whale-named band.
I don't tend to see that much live music. Unless I actually know one of the performers.

That's entirely likely; I think Said the Whale is the best known of the bands mentioned so far. I listen to CBC Radio 3 all day at work, and they only play Canadian indie music, so some of the bands I end up going to are somewhat obscure (though awesome).

So this isn't an entirely music based distraction (though there is music involved), but every Wednesday night at the Casbar on Whyte Ave (in the basement of Yiannis) the Raving Poets meet. It's a great evening of reading poetry, and improvised music by the band to add to said poems. I would definitely recommend heading out there at some point this month. Sign up to read your poem starts at around 7:30pm, and I believe the actual readings start at 8pm :)

I'm going to be a good deal
sanerless over-ambitious this week; I'm only planning to go to one show. That show is Jezibelle's CD release at the Pawn Shop on Saturday.I went and bought a ticket this afternoon, so now I have to have my word count on track Saturday, or I'll be out $11.
I will add them to ye olde playlist later, because right now I'm procrastinating at the write-in, and the wireless is too slow to access Radio 3.
The Raving Poets sound cool too; I might see if I can make it there tomorrow, or at least some time this month.

Alrighty, as I've had a rough week-and-a-bit, I'm not planning to see any more shows in November.
But December is another story.

Yes, Moonsong I definitely agree about The Raving Poets! I haven't been able to make it there this month :(. But yes, definitely a great time.
