This is how I am doing it. Funny hat, gloves and obnoxious grinning at people who walk by?

I urge you to email me if you are falling behind already ( lilacbreeze@live.com ) for the simple reason I have additional silly hats I can lend out, that and I have free-time to harass to you to write :)

Best of luck, and YES LITTLETON WRIMOS I am working on planning another event, god knows we need some laughter amidst the word storm.

Please post a short excerpt from your novel with your shoutout :)

Mine:

"Bradly stood on the front porch for nearly three quarters of an hour, rapping on the door begging his sister to at least return him the car keys he had put down on the table adjacent to the door. "For God's Sake! My - clothes - are - in - the -car!"he said through the door emphasizing each word with a hard 'knock' against it's wood paneling. Eventually he resorted to calling a taxicab, but not before screaming some of the foulest words that had ever graced the Blackvale home!"

Yay for unedittedness. :)

Much Love,

I hit some great momentum and am way ahead of where I need to be. Hoping to keep that momentum going for some time so if I hit a slowdown it won't hurt.

Depends on what you mean by pace. I'm well ahead of 1667/day, but I'm shooting for 75k+ this year and that means 2.5k/day. Including the part I haven't updated my profile with yet I'm only at ~9.1k and I need at least 10k to hit that goal, and I'm not sure like I feel the scene I just started (literally, I'm about 100-150 words in) is ready to come out yet.

I'll try to dig up a good snippet later to throw in here as an excerpt since I haven't shared any with a single soul yet.

Also I just tried to his [s z= to edit a typo I had in this post... I really need to make firefox work like my text editor of choice <_<

Ooh, I'm on pace! lol I'm...not sharing anything I've written yet though.

I'm really writing in response to your garden gnome thought, Alyssa. If you really want to know, you should totally read Going Bovine by Libba Bray. Um...after NaNo's over, of course. :D

I'm behind pace but I feel like I got some good words out in the bargain!

Such as:

Quote:
Sometimes Velainie tried to repeat some gestures she had seen her mother preform, like the short upthrust of the hand which indicated her frustration and/or desire to stab the air in lieu of the object of her frustration. Velainie understood it was not a possibility to stab a deadline or a meeting, but the possibility or impossibility never had an effect on her mother's feelings. Velainie finished reading the M section three months ago, and had been disappointed with it. She left the library at the appointed time, got in her mother's car waiting in the parking lot, and then stabbed the air with her hands to convey her frustration with the M section, and the letter M itself. Her mother used her usual expression for these displays of communication, one that indicated both annoyance and a lack of understanding, and drove off without a word. Clearly Velainie had to refine her gesture, and thus practiced the hand-stabbing motion every morning for five minutes, sometimes while holding a bar of soap in the other hand and pretending it was a cell phone.

I like your funny hats! Anything prop to get you in the writing mood is good right! If I were still in Denver I would take you up on your offer.

I'm doing pretty good so far, though today I committed the cardinal sin of rewriting a 2,500 word section that was REALLY not working for me. I mean, seriously stretching the suspension of disbelief there. It had to be done. It took about two hours, and in the process, I had a net gain of exactly 30 words. Now I have an hour to go for today's word count. Wish me luck!

I'm on pace for the 75K total, but only ahead by one day's writing. I need to get ahead a couple of days, one, in case I have a busy and and just can't write and two, because I don't trust getting my novel counted the last couple days. Never wait till the last couple days or you'll be spending a lot of time trying to get in, at least that's how it was on the old servers. I always tried to end on the 25th or 26th before, and i'm not sure i'm on pace for THAT.

i'll post an excerpt tomorrow.

Alyssa, the tiara is perfect! Ha!

I'm on pace too, amazingly enough. I had a rough start (as I'm sure many people did). For three days I kept going back - in my mind, not in the document - to the beginning of the story and tried to start it a different way. Yesterday I got so frustrated I nixed the entire cast, added some new people, changed the title, and hauled ass in a different direction.

I still haven't figured out why that worked.

I guess, since adding an excerpt is part of the thread, I can add a little:

["It speaks!" Keris exclaimed.
The mad, coal-red eyes narrowed. "And understands, damsel."]

Mwa hahahahaha . . . . figure that one out.

I am on pace but afraid I'm going to get hung up on a plot that is going to finish way too soon.

Maybe it's time to throw in a man-eating rabbit.

This is my first year and boy am I lagging behind at a weak 3300. I guess it is the constant company and almost compulsive desire to rewrite sections. How do you guys do it? And oh, I could use a writing buddy or two, however that works. I am pretty much trapped at home for now.

Excerpt:

Somewhere in the middle of the screaming I found myself vomiting noisily on the brand new chic Tokyo-Tech runners that no one had bothered to compliment me on. My eyes are shut but the afterimage of her face is burned into my retina like some electric epitaph, still is. I lean to the side and put my hand on the shelves for support. My brain dimly registered contact with an induction pad on the cool steel. After vacating the remnants of breakfast burrito and coffee onto my shoes I chance a look up. The man in black holds a towel in his hand and is carefully cleaning the blood from his fingers. He speaks with a soft commanding voice. A giant steel arm whirrs overhead, the only word I caught was Katana. His two lackeys look in my direction. I am f'd. There is no way my out of shape anti athletic ass can escape. They walk to the crate which I am cowering behind and slide it out of the way. I am not alone in my voyeuristic universe anymore, now suddenly I am pulled into the nightmare. Five men stand before me. Several seconds pass where the only sounds are shifting eyes. I look at them, they look at me. The two men in front of me look down at the puddle of vomit I am standing in. At least now someone is noticing my shoes.

I forgot to post an excerpt. Here's something from chapter 1:

From her clipboard, Coach Myers pulls two sheets of paper, one with each girl’s name on it, outlining the details of the tournament she intends to send them to. They talk about it for a while, describing how it takes place on the nearby city courts. Coach Myers mentions that the cost of the tournament is paid by the school, and that transportation can be provided if they need it. Neither family needs it. They are used to driving their kids to events or organizing carpools. Kaylee has never played on those courts before, but is looking forward to it. She hears about them from others who have played there. Then, her mother speaks, and her enthusiasm wanes slightly. “We need to figure out what is going on with Kaylee in math class before we can commit to this one hundred percent.”

At least you're at 3300+ and climbing, Correscriber; I'm still about 85 words away from cracking the 1% completion mark. If I didn't have vacation time coming, I'd be seriously bummed. Like your excerpt, lots of action (too bad about the shoes) **grin**

Your hat is excellent! I should wear a funny hat to the Aurora Write-in on Monday! I have a great one that looks like a fish - LOL

I'm just about caught up. I spent my NaNo time yesterday catching a few extra winks of sleep and fell behind, but today was my day off so I'm almost there! That, and I'm going to squeeze in one or two more writing sessions tonight!

Here's a teaser from me:

Quote:
“So there’s some almighty portal between the two worlds in my Laundromat!?” Avery asked incredulously.
“There are thousands of portals all over the world!” Jergore retorted, defensively.
“And, you’ve got to admit,” Quinn added, thoughtfully, “Seriously, if I was looking for a magical portal, that’d be the last place I’d look.”

There are a lot of passages that are bugging me, but I'm not going to let myself touch them until I hit 50,000 D:

Hey all,

I'm very happy right now. This is my first year and, seriously I'm focusing more on the story than on the word count. It will definitely exceed the 50,000 word mark. Also, having written this story without any prior outlining or anything to use as a guide, I am extremely excited about the direction the story is taking and the suspense being created.

Happy to be a part of the Denver group and I'm really trying to build word total as well. But my method is not to focus on the number as much as I focus on bringing enough into the story so that word count is not an issue.

Juggling work, online college (criminal Jusitice) and now this is a bit of a challenge but I'm loving it. Monday is the last day of this school session and I'll have an 8 day break to really pile up the numbers. :)

Be well everyone and keep the coffee brewing!

Alexander

So far, it hasn't been much of a challenge for me to write 1667 words a day.

I do want to have a few challenges here though, so I'm intentionally not writing today. I'm going to do my best to catch up over the weekend. It'll give me an excuse to write for more than an hour, which is very relaxing.

3 word count programs have confirmed it: 1% of the book is in the books, so to speak. Mild huzzah from the east side.

I am now less than 1000 words behind so wooohooo! I was almost 1500 behind yesterday. By accident I discovered a niffty little way to pad my word count: one of my characters is an alien and always repeats the first word of a sentence and when there's a break in the flow, like a conjunction or where somplace needs a comma. It's a take off of Tommy Two-times from Good Fellas, a character who always said everything twice. You can always edit the character out later :) . Happy writing-Bob

Almost back up to 2.5k/day pace, though I'm calling it a day now because the current scene does not feel well defined and I'm doing well enough I'd rather right interesting story (not perfect, but good ground work) then just spew crap for WC.

THAT is what weekends are for ;-)

My trick for now is that I'm writing 15 chapters, so I write one full chapter over the course of two days. The first day, I tend to lag a bit, but the second day I catch up since the chapter is coming to an end. Today I got to the beginning of chapter 3 and the event that I've been waiting for! (My second main character is now trapped in the curse on the magic mirror, MUWAHAHAHAHA!) And despite my plot imploding (twice) I think it's getting better and I'm hoping to make it further than almost halfway this year.

Here's my excerpt (it's the best quotable bit so far):

She hugged him tightly about the neck. “Papa, I don’t want you to go!”

“I know, little Lili. But I will be back in a month. Should I bring you back something from the western coast? Your sisters have already asked for many fineries and trinkets.”

Lilith shook her head. “I only want my papa back safely.”

“Nothing?” he wheedled, wiping away her tears again.

Sniffing, she turned her head to look out the window at the ocean in the distance. “A lily.”

“What, no golden jewels or embroidered dresses?” he joked.

“Papa!” she swatted him on the arm. “A lily. I have not seen one since we moved here, and I miss them very much.”

“Then on my honor as a gentleman, I will return with a lily for my youngest daughter.”

(It's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, if you can't tell from this.)

This thread felt like it needed a bump for people not breaking 50k yet but have made good headway.

I'm not sure I'll break my original goal of 75k, but 70k (secondary goal if I can't get all the way to 75) feels doable, and I'm ahead of schedule slightly for that right now, thanks to how many days off I have between now and the end of the month.

How about everyone else?

i'm on pace for my personal goal of 75K, but not at all ahead of pace. HOpefully i can write some later today and get a day ahead because tomorrow i can't write.

But the scene i'm in is one of the most pivatol scenes in the book and it's SLOW WRITING. good lord, baby butches with a swagger....how shall I calm her down?

I will be by the end of today if not tomorrow, I guarantee it! I'm only 4000 behind which is the closest I've come to catching up since a few days ago x)

My goal is to get to 50K, I think that's already plenty hard - I don't know how you 70K+ folks can do it!

Getting across 50k the first time is the hardest, IMO. I tried I think it was 4 times prior to last year, with a best effort of something like 20k. But just FINISHING once, at least for me, changed things entirely. I now believe I can do so much more in the timeframe given.

This time last year I think I had fewer words then you do right now. Right now I'm almost at 40k (haven't updated yet) and intended to have 41k+ before midnight, 45k by end of day tomorrow.

It all boils down to wanting to push yourself harder then the year prior. Next year don't be surprised if you want to go for more ;-).

I've been exactly a day behind (or more) since I started this thing. I just a minute ago hit the point where I'm officially "on pace." :D

"Finally, he rose, woozy, to his feet. He didn’t have the guts to stare the horse down again, but under his breath, he repeated something about “liking it or not.” Gradually, he stumbled to and then out the door, leaving his bag up in the loft as insurance that he would be back at some point. He stuck his head outside the door, listened for the sound of scuffing boots and when the coast appeared to be clear, made a mad dash for the high-growing corn. He then collapsed and crawled through the lanes slowly, clutching his chest as he did. When he reached the little road that ran through the small town, he rested for awhile before starting off along it, in search of food and ice."

SOOOO excited!!! This is the first time I've been officially caught up since November 5th! LOL

I also made my best personal score for one day today so far (4,167!). Things have taken an exciting turn in my novel, hopefully that'll give me enough fodder to finish it out.

Here's a recent excerpt:

Quote:
Avery was impressed. On earth, Waylon had seemed like an awkward, nerdy, unsuccessful man. She could see that here, amongst the goblins, he seemed to be in his element. He carried himself with a completely different air and he was very calm and composed considering the situation. She couldn't think of anyone better to be an ambassador of sorts between the two species. She had developed a great amount of respect for this strange man in her short time knowing him - he had certainly earned it.

Back to slightly ahead of pace after today. Should hit 50k Wednesday, then 4k/day the rest of the month since I have off thur-mon (took mon off) to just pound out words like crazy and hopefully get to 70k. Problem is going to be I'm going to a friends for Thanksgiving so that will make hitting my wordcount hard. Will have to bother getting up early and pounding words out before heading up to his place.
