I'm not sure why NaNo doesn't allow them, but I really wish that they would. My 'name' is still a name I love, but I have a writing persona that has popped up in the past four years I want to change my name to. I know I could make a new account, but then my join date wouldn't be in 2006 and I'm proud of the fact that it is. So next year, maybe...?

I hope this becomes available again sometime too :) It used to be available in the off season, October, or something. Maybe some year it shall, if we get enough donations again :)

It was available during ONE off-season... but it was glitchy as heck, and wound up reverting with site relaunch. There was also a way to change it using a bug, but I think that's been fixed... haven't heard anything from that. As of right now, we've got more vital things we have to worry about, but I think that since it's been done in the past, there's a chance we might be able to get it in the future, provided we meet funding needs and have the extra to spend on it. :)

LJ has a thing called rename tokens that you purchase for $15.
Maybe if we could have the same thing here, it could be considered a donation, if it were possible for someone on the tech team to do that change for us in the off season, or something? :D Then they wouldn't be distracted by more important things.
But I don't even know if the tech have that kind of access..
Just a wishful thought ^^

+1 for the name change. I tried using my name but, it was a little stale. After getting to know nanowrimo the first day I wanted to change the name as I saw it was ok to use a motivating alias. I am motivatedprocrastinator and it reminds me of my dual self and helps me to move forward. I was just plain ol my name before. It was too late for me to delete b/c I had asked for help in the forums but I changed my name anyways since I hadn't done anything the first day. When I did change...I soared. See a name change can make a difference.

I'm on my second user account and I miss my start date. I joined in 2003 but according to my new username I joined 2008. Picky, but unless someone looks at my profile, it looks like I've been doing this less years than what I have. Ah well.

I love the name change token solution from three (four?) posts up! Solves the problem of it costing money and of it taking away time from the busy site in November. I vote for this! :3
I refuse to create a new account and drop this one because I want to keep my start date, but I absolutely hate my name and would gladly pay a few dollars to change it. (It's an old nickname from an ex... *shudder*)

I know other services that charge for username changes. Zune and Xbox charge 800 "points" which is approximately $10 U.S.
This might not be a bad idea to investigate.
