So, I was lying here tonight, with homework/paper stuff in front of me on my bed, and with the knowledge that I planned and had time to work on schoolwork tonight.
I wrote.
So, I would like to come out and just say it:
I am Sarah Ann, and I'm addicted to NaNo.
It's been four days since my addiction reappeared in my life and... I'm thinking I'll be able to get over it in under four weeks, but I will need much help along the way.
Is anyone else facing the same sort of problems as they plow ahead to 50k? (Or more!)

I discovered I had this problem at about midnight on Halloween. I didn't think it was that bad - 50K didn't sound *too* scary - but um, my new goal is a bit more scary...it might take longer than four weeks to overcome, I might need a lot of help. I also write at work....I should stop doing that...

Um, it's more of a range. Something between 100K & 150K I think would actually fit what I'm writing. Witht he exception of this weekend I'm going to try to average 5K a day and see how far that gets me in my novel...I'm almost a halfway to 50K and I"m writing chapter 3 of 18 :P

I'm feeling a bit compelled by all this. In that I am getting my word count out, it is going well. However, I go back and forth on the actual viability of what I am writing. Is it any good at all? Ugh, some of it is horribly bad. Plot is going in weird places I hadn't intended. I am fascinated by this thing and actually feeling a little out of control. Is this what it's like to have an addiction? I'm not sure.

What you're experiencing is very common for NaNo. And if you think those feelings are bad this week, wait until next week! The trick is to push through those feelings. And remember, this is just a first draft and first drafts are always crap. That's why we edit what we write. To make it better. So I wouldn't worry. You're feeling exactly what you're supposed to for NaNo ;)

My addiction began when I found the NaNo website and learned of this thing called National Novel Writing Month. For the next two weeks all I did was PLOT, PLOT, PLOT... As the days ticked down to Halloween night, I realized that I was in serious withdraw.... I needed to write. If I didn't write soon my head would explode with un-written words that bounced dangerously inside the confines of my skull.
When midnight hit, I was so confused about the daylight savings time thing I waited another hour as I paced the floors, chewed my nails, and glanced at the clock every two minutes. At one o'clock I got my high.... my fingers flew across the keyboard in a frenzy I wasn't aware I contained. I haven't come down from my high yet... I don't wanna.... you can't make me....
Yeah, I admit I have a problem... and I LIKE IT!!!! ahahahahahahah

Hello. My name is Lauren, and I am addicted to NaNoWriMo.
Every waking moment that I am not sleeping or eating or in class, I am writing. I fear that this addiction may not go away for a long time. Perhaps even as long as almost four more weeks. I am checking my word count compulsively. I believe I may need immediate NaNo-forum assistance.
I am so addicted that I have begun checking the word count frequently for my school assignments, even those which do not require a specific word count.
I have also set a frightening word count goal for myself which is constantly taunting me. I believe I may reach it, but by this time, I may be ready to be committed to a mental hospital. My word count goal is about 270,000 words.
Thank you for listening to my rant. I am going to go write 400 more words now before I go to bed.

I had a relapse this weekend. I not only wrote 10K, but I also decided that trimming my own bangs was a better idea since the time it would take to go and wait and finally get them trimmed at a place, not to mention the cost, could all be better spent on writing; I could write the next 2K in that time, and the $5 it would take me plus whatever tip I felt reasonable could buy me a sandwich or something at the next write-in....dear lord I hope my bangs are straight....I wasn't thinking very clearly after going to bed at 1am. I might regret this choice in a few hours.

Yesterday I wrote 4,000 words, even though I had schoolwork I could have been working on the whole time. I also had writers block for the length of those 4000 words, so I'm not even certain what sort of crummy writing occurred in those pages....

*Stands up* Hi, my name is Dot. I am addicted to writing. I swear, it is a good thing. After all, I may have started writing at 13, but I have had an off and on relationship with my novels for the past nine years. The fact that I am actually sitting down regularly and working on a novel, makes me happy. The only reason my mom would say it's bad is because I'm not doing chores (I usually claim to be too busy anyway), and not yet working on job hunting. *Hunches shoulders*. Oh, yeah. Forgot about that.
Oh, well. I saw that one of you (don't remember now that I'm not looking at the forum) was in a frenzy to write for two weeks before. I'm sorry. I totally understand. I actually wrote (nothing that counts towards my formal word count of course). I found out about NaNoWriMo from my cousin the weekend before Halloween and ended up going crazy that following week. I wrote over 5k in that week alone. That's sad now that I look back on it. I so could have added that to my formal word count if only I'd waited. *Shakes head* Oh, well. My novel will just be even longer because of it.
Honestly, about the word count goal. I'm trying for the 50k this month, but I've had the story planned for probably 1-2 years now. The story will stop when the story wants to stop, not because of any specific word count. I just happen to know that it will be over 75k.
Okay, done now. Sorry for ranting, but that's my take on WA and my writing.
P.S. - Lauren, your goal scares me, too, only because I don't know how long my own stories plan to be.

There's no rule that says the novel can only be 50K. Just that it should be at least 50K ;) There are plenty of people, both here in D/FW and around the world, who have novels that are much longer than 50K.

Oh, believe me, I !know!! the 50k is only a minimum and that so many people are trying for much longer. Technically, I actually started the story beforehand, I'm just not counting the original word count (about 21k) in the nanowrimo word count. So, that's how I know this story will be much longer than 75k. The only reason I said I'm only really trying for the 50k is because I'm not sure I'd have the time to actually do more than that this month. Here's hoping I'm wrong and I can actually finish the novel this month. That would be so cool. To actually finish a novel after 9 years of starting so many. Yes, that would be a dream come true.
By the way, I have at least 7 novels started on paper/computer (at least one chapter each). The max number of chapters I had for any of them (and, believe me, my novels will each have a ton of chapters) was 13 chapters. Currently, I only have 10 chapters for the one I'm doing for Nanowrim, so, obviously, I didn't choose to complete my longest one. That's okay. That's the one that was speaking to me then.
Okay, I'm rambling. Yes, 50k is just minimum. It's all a question of time. K, see ya at the finish line.
