I can't seem to stop checking my word count, to the point where I stop writing to check how many words I have every few hundred words.

I think part of the problem is that my novel is now longer than any fiction I have written before, and I am fairly excited by how well I have gone so far. My inner 12 year old wants to write my word count in big bubble letters and decorate it with glitter pens, maybe there should be confetti every thousand words.

But still I need to stop checking word count wasting huge slabs of time cross checking word count in different ways, this is a waste of precious writing time.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Yes. And worse still, I now have 4 separate documents to add up when I go to count it. I am now just leaving the calculator open for the purposes of word-count-adding.

I got nothing.

I am EXACTLY the same!!! Except maybe a little more obsessive, I've been clicking recount sometimes after 20 more words! Too sad I know.
But as you said, this is the most fiction I've ever written and it is SO escitng!
Thankyou nano!!

I click save obsessively, sometimes five second after the first time. And yes, definitely obsessed with checking and posting my word count.

I've not been too bad, though I was tonight during the last 500 words because all i wanted to do was make it to that magical 20,000 mark. Why was 20,000 a magical mark? beats me, maybe because it was a pretty, round number.

I'm using Ywriter to write my novel on, though and it has an overall word count sitting on the bottom left hand corner of the main window which counts up all the word used in the entire story so checking my word count is only a matter of glancing down on the screen.

Maybe that sort of thing would be the answer to obsessive count checking.

Ditto. But I'm using yEdit (by the same programmer, surprise-surprise!) which as the same word count thing. I usually used Wordpad for NaNo the past two years, but liked the simplicity of not having to copy it to Word to check the word count by using yEdit.

I'm primarily using FastPencil, which is awesome for quick wordcounting.

You could have said a word, but you turned away. Or do you always act in such a passive way?

Word 2007 has it on the bottom taskbar. This makes me very happy.

Ah yes, the word count obession it is one i share too, especially with the need to decorate in glitter pens.
writing in word on my mac has the word count shop up down the bottom as i write...its very handy and motivating.

Finally! I've found people who do this too. After I've written every sentence, I look down the page at the word count and either cheer or moan at how much I've written. Sometimes, I even highlight the words I've just written and check how many that is. It's kind of sad, haha.
