The beginning of this month has been so hectic with so many other things going on and I have found myself 4 days behind, though I try to write everyday. Should I be scared about a non-completion, or can I bounce back from this deficit?

On the same note, how does everyone write around a filled-to-the-brim schedule? I try to sacrifice sleep, but words that manage to leak out are barely coherent dribble.

I just joined today, so I'm behind as well. This is my first year so I'm not sure what to expect. I think as long as you put in a little more time to catch up you should be good. Also, if you don't complete your novel then that's fine as well, as long as you tried. At least this way you have a head start with your novel.

Hi Paul

I'm really behind as well and my schedule is such that if I dont get up and write at 5 a.m., nothing gets done. There's still plenty of time tho! Hell, you're ahead of me and Im not bagging it! I figure I have to write about 2000 words a day at this point ... and I write about 500 or so words and hour ... so. um yeah. I have to get up at 5 everyday no matter what. It's only for a month. Then it's all editing from there!

I'm going to take at least 2 or 3 days to pull 6 hours straight .... very soon.

There's plenty of time to recover, bounce back and finish.

As someone who once took a week and a half off in the middle of the month, being behind is no big obstacle. One good evening a writing can sometimes be 10,000 words by itself so it can be pretty easy to catch up again.

Doing 2000 a day isn't that much harder than 1667. You will triumph!

Well I'm in the same boat with you now, I restarted last night with a completely new idea because I didn't like the way the first one was going!

Don't sweat it. We're at the tail-end of week 1, which means there are plenty of days left to make up word count.

While looking at 1,667 words a day can set a pace, it can also distract when you figure out where you should be and you're not. Best idea: Don't look., just write. You can distract yourself right out of writing by dwelling on a word count goal.

As Hillary said, one good night of writing and you're right back in there.

Try to block some time out on a weedend day so you can write straight for 3-5 hours. And if you can't, don't worry. Grab time when you can.

One year, I completed the 50k in two weeks because the first two weeks I was busy with edits for one of my novels.

Look where you can pull time. Maybe you'll have to get up a little earlier (I prefer staying up later) to catch up. But that's up to you.

The bottom line is, throw out daily word count goals if it's frustrating and distracting you from writing, and just keep writing.

Better yet? Go somewhere with no Internet connection and no distractions. You'll click out 2k+ easily.

Thanks guys! I think I should be alright. I'm planning on an internetless day on Sunday for long hours of writing to try and get on track. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I am so relieved someone posted this: I only have 3,222 words and I feel like a slacker. I'm really enjoying my story but I'm so busy! I want to finish no matter what--good luck everybody!!

I was glad to see this! I'm really busy now and for the next week. I'm writing a little bit when I can and the basic story is coming together. I now have a name for my main character but no title yet that I really like. After next week, I should have more time and plan to just write like crazy. This is encouraging. Good luck everyone!

Glad I'm not the only one! Yesterday was a 3k day in a effort to play catch up, but I'm still behind. I found that this site to be tremendously helpful in reducing distractions- http://writeordie.drwicked.com/
I found it posted on the forums here (can't remember where, unfortunately) but it seems like the kind of thing to share.

I know what you mean. This is my fourth year doing this, and every single year I have gotten behind and given up after the first week, and then been furious with myslef when the month is over and everyone else is celebrating. This is the first year I have actually managed to stay at or a little above target. Just please don't give up! You can definitely catch up, devoting big chunks of time on the weekend is a great idea, if you can manage it. Good luck! :)

GAH!! Same here. I have less than 1000 words, should I keep going? Plus, I have no idea how to end my story...or the middle for that matter.
