I was working at the Independence Health and Wellness fair today (we were the booksellers for Michael Symon's new cookbook). The Independence High School cross country team was headed to states and were hanging in the lobby before boarding the bus. They all had their last names across their hoodies, but there was one girl who had it across the back of her sweatpants instead. Her last name (Storme) became the last name for my female protagonist.

The inspiration for my main character "Bishop Wilmarth" comes from reading the Dunwich Horror by H.P. Lovecraft. He's a lawyer from a strange backwater county in New England and one of the popular last names in the story is Bishop. Given the prevalence in real life of the name in New England geneologies and the religious connotations, I chose it for a first name. The last name is the family name of the main "Good Guy" in the story. I just plain liked it.
Of course the joke is:
"Hi, my name is Bishop Wilmarth."
"Really. What's your diocese?"
"No. Bishop is just my first name. I'm a lawyer."
:p

When I bought my Saturn in 1998, I thought it would be cool to get a personalized plate of a name of one of Saturn's moons. I went through the list on their computer trying names. Finally, I found one that was available: PHOEBE.
When the car arrived and I went down to pick it (or should I say her) up, I realized they (or I, but I don't think it was me) had filled out the form incorrectly and the licence plate read PHORBE.
My choice was to get a new plate, leaving the car in the showroom for a day or two, or drive it off the lot with the wrong license plate. As this was the first brand new car I'd ever bought, I opted to just take the plate the way it was and deal with it later.
That plate remained on the car for 8 years. And even now, 2 years after removing it, I consider the car's name to be "Phorbe"
This is a direct inspiration for the name of my character's space ship, the Crimson Lien.

In a story that's currently sitting on the back burner due to not being part of my NaNo project, I almost had a ship called the Placeholder. I was all set to explain that after acquiring the ship, the characters had to fill out some paperwork, but hadn't thought of a name yet, and so were instructed to put a placeholder name on the forms.
----------Then I thought of a better name.
When your inner editor says that your writing stinks, tell it: "Yeah, so?"
Of course it stinks. That's why it's called a FIRST draft.
