My guess is Donnie Iris...?
Seriously though, my fellow Pittsburghers, let's get talking about what we're all listening to while we're noveling. I could use some new music (realized the other night that my 'novel music' playlist is about three or four years old, with a few songs just tossed on here and there since then). Sure, there's a whole forum dedicated to this sort of thing, but I want to know what people I may presumably meet in the next few weeks are hearing! So, what is it that's inspiring us while we're typing away? And can you bring some to the next write-in so we can all share and check it out?
Lately I've been listening to a lot of The Slip (2004 and previous), back when they were in their more-jammy era. Writing a fantasy novel, so all their melodic meandering seems to really be helping. Other than that, it's the Duffy Radio on Pandora (loooove her), and my old standard, Mr. Ryan Adams.
How about you? Discuss :)
My Husband Thinks I'm Writing,

(PS, if you've never heard of The Slip and want to check them out, let me know, and I will make you a disc of their finest songs to bring to the next write-in! The only thing I love more than NaNoWriMo is making mix tapes! :)

I'm currently listening to my "belly dance" station on Pandora. What I listen to when I write depends on 1.) what I'm writing and 2.) how distractable I am at that moment lol So right now, I'm pretty easily distracted, therefore--music without words.

Uh, right now it's Saturday Night Live, mostly because I'm too lazy to pick out a song, but usually it's a lot of All Time Low, Forever the Sickest Kids, Cobra Starship, The Academy Is... and more.
Although I can jump to randomness, like Eminem, who inspired a scene in my book.
Oh, and Uh...Fox...who's The Slip?

At this moment, it's Radiohead,
Before that it was Snow Patrol, PJ Jarvey, NIN, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Garbage, Morcheeba, Alkaline Trio, Editors, She Wants Revenge, Glasvegas, Catherine Wheel, Keane, Tool, The Smiths, REM (ahem, you get the picture). Totally random selections from my mp3 player. I guess I've been sitting here for a while writing, because I've gone through 157 songs already.
I had thoughts of pulling up my station on Pandora, but I tend to get distracted rating songs and reading information about any bands I'm not familiar with, which does not lend itself well to attempting to actually meet today's word total when I've been slacking off all week.

I find that Muse is, ironically, my best inspiration when writing. At least usually. For this story currently, not so much, because I'm trying to step away from that sort of theme. However, Apocalyptica and Mogwai are two really good instrumental bands that provide a nice atmosphere. They seem to be working out well for this story, because basically their songs are just raw emotion. I love it :)

Red Corvette,
I used to tour in a band on the jammy scene many years ago. On a few
I knew the Slip when they were playing more improvised jazz influenced music. Haven't thought of them in years.
I have so much music, pushing 40,000 tunes in my iTunes library. Here's my usual suspects list for when I'm writing. I'm also usually usually in headphones for complete isolation, just me, one of my macs pu
pumping the jams while the other is taking the word.
Currently my top six are:
Muse (their new record really fits my apocalyptic theme)
Keith Jarrett (trio, quartets and especially solo piano)
Bill Evans trio
aphex twin
A. R. Rahman
E.S.T (a European jazz trio)
always thrown in to my writing sessions for inspiration:
Squarepusher
Joni Mitchell
David S. Ware
Mahler
Radiohead
John Coltrane
Eberhard Weber
Goldberg Variations played by Glenn Gould
Hendrix
non-mainstream hip-hop
some mainstream hip-hop
well really, I could write a list all day and it would continue to be this eclectic. I was a music major who, in my last year of school, took an advance fiction workshop and from then on, I've been writing and struggling to balance my practice and writing time.

Last year I listened to the soundtrack to The Piano obsessively while writing. I've got that in the mix for this year, but also I'm trying some different things. Tonight it was the Goldfrapp-esque station on my Pandora. Also a lot of Lamb, Slowpho, whatever else of their ilk that qualifies as Electronic.
And my girlcat snoring. If it were a human it would be obnoxious wheezing, but it's a cat. So it's adorable.

Much love for both of these!
I tend to listen to instrumental stuff when I'm trying to focus on writing - movie, game or anime soundtracks, etc. I've got playlists for fight scenes, upbeat and decently-paced "traveling" music, and quiet or angsty moods.
Thinking I may need to add some more vocals into this year's mix, since I'm writing more of an urban fantasy plot.

OMIGOSH, I love that song! A friend sent me a mix tape about 15 years ago (on an actual cassette tape, yes, that long ago!), and that was one of the songs on it. Have loved it ever since. He'd also put Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Depeche Mode, NIN, Sponge, and a few others on that tape ... and I've been listening to nearly all of them ever since.
And yes, I'm 48 years old, and my kids borrow my CDs. So there. :)
------
For writing music, though, lately it's been me in the living room (when I'm alone in the house), with Comcast's upper channels music stations. I turn on channel 441 on the cable box (light classical), then turn off the television (but leave the cable box on) and pump up the home theater speakers instead.
Light classical is good background music that doesn't interfere with writing dialogue, etc. Writing music is different from "fun" music for me. And road trip music is another category entirely.

For the most part, I can only listen to word-less music when writing. This will include: Albannach, Fushu Daiko, Barrage, E Muzeki, and Circa Paleo. The only singing I can listen to is Celtic Woman, Nickel Creek, and ShaeLaurel.
And I just realized that you probably haven't heard of most of these bands. So never mind.
