Seriously.
¬.¬
I was just sat there, innocently typing away, and something inside it blew and now it's not workingggggggg.
I've lost everything :|
What's worse, it's swallowed my Sims3 disk and it won't come out xD
Does anyone know if there's a way to recover my documents? Like taking out the hard drive or something?
IHMAWTD,
Danny.
PS: Am using Joey's laptop, he isn't happy about it xD

I'll ask my partner, he's a bit of a computer whizz - my only issue is that I just haven't had time to write much yet (note the ridiculously small word count!). Hopefully I'll be upping that later today, and hopefully I can get some info for you about file recovery.

I don't know how to recover documents but I think it's possible. The Tech Guys at PC World have a data recovery service, although it's probably not the best or cheapest. I had something similar happen to me at the end of a dissertation once. It's a horrible feeling and you have my sympathies.
I'm mailing my drafts to a google mail account, just in case.

I recently messed up my netbook, where I do most of my writing - however, I have two 2.5" hard drive caddies, for hard disks from laptops of yester year (handy as external storage), so I took the hard drive out of the laptop, and used the caddy to back up everything important on to my main laptop.
External USB hard drive mounts can be fairly cheap, you just need to be sure of what type of hard drive you have, whether it's got a SATA or a IDE connection.
Here's one for IDE (common on older laptops):

All you do is fit your hard disk, and plug it into any computer that has a USB port, and if the disk isn't damaged, you can just copy your files across. It's a bit more complicated if the disk is damaged however.

What happens when you try to boot it up? My last computer had a hard drive failure, and when I tried to boot it, it would switch on and try to load, but it never managed to run the OS. This one, at one point, had a power supply failure - switch it on and nothing happens at all, but everything on the drive was safe because that wasn't affected.
The power supply failure also happened without warning, whereas with the hard drive there was a lot of distinct clicking and locking up beforehand.

You can recover lost data provided the Hard Drive isn't burning. I had some tame techies at school do it for me, the advantages of being a teacher, but not everyone can do that.
I guess PC World may be your best bet. Cheaper than buying another drive.

The same thing happened to me! Monday 2nd November and I am left with no laptop :( I feel your pain.
Do you have a PS3? My boyfriend tested my hard-drive in that. We discovered that the hard-drive is fine but the rest of the laptop is bust. This is a bad thing because apparently it would be much cheaper to fix if it was the other way around! I have given up and decided that I am just going to get a new one. In the meantime, I have invested in lots of paper and pens!
Good luck :)
