I was apparent scarred for life by Sid and Marty Krofft. The only two closet monsters that I remember in any detail came from their shows.
One was a puppet called "Mr. Munchy," that was big enough to be able to "swallow" a person:

The other -- well, okay, she didn't come from Land of the Lost, I just think that that's where I first heard of her. She originally came from Greek Mythology.
That's right. Medusa the Gorgon was in my closet.

So one of them wanted to eat me, the other was going to turn me to stone. I have no idea how that was going to work. Fortunately, the closed closet door proved to be an impenetrable barrier to them.
Not too bright, apparently. And neither were they! (rimshot)

Of course it stinks. That's why it's called a FIRST draft.

I couldn't sleep with the closet door open, because the hanging clothes turned into skeletons. Fairly certain I heard the phrase "skeletons in the closet" and my imagination took over from there.

I was certain that if the closet remained open spiders would crawl out of it. I still prefer the closet closed and I still fear spiders. Anything with too many legs is a closet monster as far as I'm concerned.

I wasn't usually afraid of monsters, oddly. I was afraid of strange burglar types hiding in my closet, waiting to spring out and murder my family in our beds....so I'd pray and imagine my father defending us until I finally calmed down.

Oh wait...sometimes if I've seen a movie that creeped me out and is staying with me, I imagine that creature or person that creeped me out is somewhere in my room, just waiting for the right moment. Like the hooded man who turned on the trash compactor in that Monk episode. Or...for some reason I'm thinking there was a hooded thing I was afraid of...oh. Yeah...the undead from LOTR. The ring wraiths. Ugh.

I used to think there was a monster in my closet that looked like a rusty pipe with sharp teeth. He didn't have a name, but he had a rough scratchy voice (like K'Nuckles from the Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack) and he would try to bite my leg and pull me under my toy box if I got too close, but only when i was wearing a particular pair of purple pants. For some reason, instead of throwing away those pants, I would wear them and just avoid my toy box for the day.

edit: I don't remember much about him except I thought he had a dirty mouth, even before I knew any swear words, and he was very impatient with me for not coming close to the toy box so he could bite me.

As a kid, my closet monster was blue and hairy (yes, this was before monsters inc, came out. and he looks nothing like that.). He had big, bloodshot eyes and when I think of it now, kinda looked like you'd expect a blue yeti or big foot to look like.. He never came out, but I knew he was there....

I was actually much more afraid of something trying to grab my ankles from under my bed in the two seconds it took for me to turn off my bedroom light, sprint across the room and jump into my bed. I always imagined it as some kind of shadowy creep with scaly hands and a snarling mouth.

And, when I was in sixth grade and first saw The Ring movie, I was totally convinced that because I didn't have a TV, the girl would hide under my bed or in my mirror when it was dark.

Mine was a puppet of 'Animal' from the muppet babies. Apparently when we were shopping for toys I picked him out, big bug eyes, angry black eye brows and fur that looked like fire.

During the day he was a perfectly innocent drug addict. Not entirely sure where I picked this up in my youngster brain and I'm sure my parents were horrified when they heard me tell them about it. Good news is that I nursed him to health. Bad news is that every night he would sit on my top shelf in my closet and stare out at me with those horrible big white eyes that glowed quite well in the completely dark room. He never seemed to move so I have to assume he got his score after I had gone to sleep, or maybe when I was away at school (looking back I imagine him as either a cocaine guy or a meth guy, Animal seriously looks like he's into some hard drugs).

The real scary folks were to guys under my bed, they were the bear and the fox from brier rabbit?. Instead of wanting to eat the rabbit they wanted to eat me, so they set up camp below my bed and stoked up a nice big fire, hoping to roast me while I slept. If I climbed out of bed they'd just snag me and eat me raw. I imagine they told ghost stories while they waited for me to lull to sleep and cook to juicy tender.

I had (and have) a SHOWER monster, not a closet one. One of my shower doors is frosted and the other is opaque, so when the doors are closed, very little light gets in and I CONSTANTLY am looking over my shoulder at the frosted door whenever I walk into or by the bathroom.

I've always imagined it as a sort of bird skull with very wide eye socket things, with a body made of just... darkness. No real features. Ugh, now I'm all creeped out again...

There was a humidifier box on the shelf in my closet as a kid that had neon-dayglo writing on it, and I have NEVER been able to sleep with a closet door open since seeing glowing eyes in the closet. They were glowing "I's" but I was four, I didn't know that.

So, my closet monsters are formless creatures with glowing eyes, but it is safe so long as the closet door is closed.
