Drinks -- location, time, etc?

I've noticed no one's started a thread about this, and there's been a fair bit of "Where will drinks be this year?" so I figured I'd start the ball rolling on some conversation.

For the new people-- traditionally, us Melbourne NaNoers have been meeting up once a week during November to get together, relax, talk about our novels, write, laugh, commiserate, cheer one another on, etc, and socialise with others who understand what it's like to undertake such a writing project.

A couple of years ago, it sort of didn't stop, and November turned into December... January... February... hey, it's NaNoWriMo time again!-- and so on and so forth.

Anyway, traditionally, it's been Thursday nights. We went to The Lion in Melbourne Central because it was quicker to get to from the station, easier to find, and was wheelchair-accessible. (Someone asked.) The food ain't that great, the service is pretty crummy, and they play loud annoying music, plus, they get shitty with us for eating non-Lion food there and moving furniture around. That said, we get decent space for a large group of people, they have a wide variety of beverages, and there are other food places like Nandos nearby. (I'm biased-- I don't particularly like it, personally, but I can understand it having a purpose and being a good place for NaNo drinks.)

Right now we seem to be at Sahara, which is intimate and beautiful. The staff are awesome, the food's lovely, but getting in there requires going up a lot of steps, and once the size of our group fills out a bit, it can get difficult to have us all in one spot. Sometimes they have other functions on, too, which can leave us a bit stranded.

Other places we've tried, IIRC-- Golden Monkey in Hardware Lane (plush, pretty, expensive but cute), that restaurant with free champagne on Thursdays at Melbourne Central (not too bad, a bit noisy, expensive food but they have a smoking balcony), The Lounge (cramped and noisy and not particularly good for our needs).

So.... I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks. I dunno-- I get the idea some group discussion and organisation might be cool, and since there are new folk here, maybe there's some stuff we haven't considered before.

How are we all? Are we all pumped? Are we all excited?

This year I'm going to actually TRY to get to a write in, scary as I find them!
What genre is everyone doing this year?

I think I'm actually going for Erotic Fiction. My brain is so fried from uni and work that I don't feel like being excessively plotty this year. If I do, the book will be called The Demon's Daughter and be about a succubus, thus being a nod to my usual genre (fantasy).

What about y'all, what are people doing?
Live Journal?

So who is using live journal to chronical their nano this year?

My journal is always writing/publishing focused, so it won't be much of a change for me:
Writing Dares and Challenges

This thread seems to have vanished, so I'm restoring it.

It's already decided that you must have a penguin in your Nano this year for Melbourne writers.

Any other dares can be added here!

As a reply to whoever it was in the old thread, the writing no sex thing for me was a dare given earlier in the year.
Tying up loose ends before the silly season?

OK, so I just wanted to check, who out there has stories that they are rushing to finish before NaNo?

Are you actually rushing to finish them, or are you just going to stop for the period of November?

I have a novel that I am trying to finish, and a short story that decided to be written... The novel is close to the end, i just need to push myself to finish the thing... It has been a VERY slow write... I put it on hold for last years nano, and found myself missing it by the end of the month... I am aiming to finish it by the 19th at the very latest... But having always been a bit of a slow written story, I dunno how that will all pan out.

What are you guys putting off or rushing through? Think you'll get there?

I guess what I am asking, is who else is doing a bit of a pre nano burst?
----------
NaNo07: A Ghostly Belonging - WON!
NaNo08: Muntaer - A story of love and betrayal, telepathic horses, and aliens in a medieval world.
MCs: 5 - so far...

I only found out about this about 2 weeks ago. thanks to my housemate; should I feel bad about that? It looks like a lot of fun and I hope you guys all do well! I, on the other hand am slightly worried about how much I will actually get done. Hopefully my physical writing pal [bsolah] will help, but does anyone else have ideas for this newbie???
