Minot Writers?

Just checking to see if there are any NaNo-ers out there living in or around Minot. This is my third year attempting to finish and I think it'll be a lot easier if there are actually other writers I can meet and write with. If you're out there, get in touch and we'll see what we can do to get together.
----------
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Right? Well, I'm on that second try again (third time overall). Maybe that's what it takes.

Monumental Failure... and other troubles

So... I'm at 11,745 and that is it. I went through a dry patch of writer's block, then I have gotten myself into a rut of too much work, no free time. NaNoWriMo is a monumental failure this year, after winning my only two other years. And, that isn't all that has gone wrong.

I've attempted to run write-ins every Wednesday and we also had a potluck/write-in scheduled. Let me tell you how all that has worked out and how future write-ins look. The first Wednesday was myself and a late show of someone who didn't write, which is fine. The next two Wednesdays have been an utter failure on my part, missing both due to circumstances beyond my control. The potluck was me and my wife (who doesn't write), and no one else showed. This coming Wednesday? There will be no write-in due to my job requirements (Thanksgiving's newspaper will not be fun to deliver, due to the sheer size).

So, how would I rate my NaNo experience this year? On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best, I'd give it a 2.

My wife makes dog treats for a living. For the past four years, she has done this. November has been her busiest month every year and, by default, has been MY busiest month every year. This year, I have a job in a management position that has taken away most of my free time with work necessity (since I'm now salary). The last speed bump is that while I was ready to write my novel there were things that were planned that prevented me from a) starting it on the first day, b) writing at a steady pace, and c) doing what was needed as an ML to motivate others.

November has been a bad, bad, bad month. This is, quite possibly, the WORST month of the year for this. Hey, did I mention that I also work for the post office and they ramp up our hours there as Christmas approaches? :(
----------

ND Wrimos i need some help

I live in Texas, but my novel takes place in 19th century north dakota.

I have a question regarding the Mandan area...

I need to know about Crying Hill. If anyone knows anything about it's location, and other general information, I would be extremely grateful.

What is everybody writing this year? Any special goals? Any tips or tricks you plan to use to finish?

We discussed this at the Bismarck meet and greet (or would that be the Bismarck and Minot meet and greet, because we had half of the Minot contingent there, too?), but my memory is a sieve, and I think we'd all like to know what all the NDers are writing.

I'm going back to what I consider my "specialty genre," caregiver stories, a topic near and dear to my heart. (For those of you who don't know, I am a professional caregiver.) NaNo title is A Change of Seasons (three words longer than the real "working title" of simply Seasons--it all counts!). My MC is a middle-aged spinster tied down by a promise made to her dad to take care of her mom, who has Alzheimer's. She makes friends with an elderly lady who is this wonderful, inspiring person who helps her keep things in perspective.

My goal for this year is to have an awesome NaNo. I know I can win--that's not a problem--but I want to finish early and have at least 60K by the end of the month. Last year was a nightmare, and I want to recapture the high-flying experience of 2006, when my first "caregiver story" practically flew from my fingertips. I also admitted at our meet and greet that I tend to measure myself against a fellow Wrimo who seems to most closely match my writing speed and ability (hello, LimeCat!), and I have been challenged. Let the fun begin! (I won't be at the midnight write-in, but I will most likely be writing at midnight!)

As for my tips and tricks, I plan to do my usual 2000 words and/or 2 hours a day goal, which gives me enough padding to miss on occasion. That has served me well. Our ML has lined up lots of write-ins--I want to attend at least half of them, but that's up in the air. I'm writing about what I know best so I don't get hung up on research. The story has lots of potential for situations I can throw in if I get stuck. And my house is a disaster, so I've decided if I don't want to write, I have to clean. If I need a break from writing, I will clean. (You have no clue how much of a punishment that is!!!)

OK, your turn!
----------

Bismarck NaNo

Hi everybody! I wasn't the first post, but I'm the second post, so yay
me.

I'm recovering from a serious loss of data on my computer from a virus,
so all the stuff I had planned is slowly coming back. Since I can't put
"NaNoWriMo" on anything, I'll be using "Wordsmiths" instead (which is
the writing group I'm looking at kicking back into gear). The idea is
to put out our own custom posters (which will look like a movie poster
on a full sheet of paper) and some t-shirts (which I initially believed
would be free but I may have to have folks pay for materials, not the
effort).

What else have I got on the burner? How about a permanent write-in day
every week? Yes, I'll be holding a write-in 52 times starting in
November! I want the Wordsmiths to be a place for us to write a lot
and what can get someone writing more than knowing someone else will
sit and write with them on a regular basis! These will NOT replace the
potluck write-ins we normally hold while NaNo is in full swing, so these
are optional and separate... however, if one happens to fall on the same
day, no harm, no foul!

I've got lots of ideas for this year and since I'm recovering from the
"Fall of the Computer," I'm hoping I can still do it all. Look for
more posts on what I'd like to do!

Oh, and welcome back to NaNo, folks!
----------

Website Nearly Unusable

So, I've accessed this website about 10 times since the kick off and I've gotten through a whopping 2 times. That is 80% failure.

If someone would like to contact me, limecat AT bis DOT midco DOT net is the way to go because I'm guessing that this website isn't going to allow me through for 80% of the time.

My word count is right as of this post but I've attempted to update the count as often as I've tried to get in and I'm seeing that rather than a nice steady flow of my progress, which is what I had last year, my count is going to go up in chunks every few days.

It's sad, really, and I've already notified the staff... with any luck, I'll be able to access the site again soon.
North Dakota Municipal Liaisons

I'd like to announce myself as the Bismarck (Bismarck/Mandan?) Municipal Liaison and say "hello." After meeting the small, but dedicated, group of WriMo's tonight, I am wondering if there are any other MLs in the state for my proposal for 2009:

- North Dakota Kickoff, as a whole, in one location.

So, this is me (LimeCat) signing in for Bismarck (and Mandan!), anyone else?
ND-wide Kickoff / TGIO Party?

This might be a bit late to announce this for this year but I'm going to
suggest it anyway so that everyone involved can start thinking about it:

A North Dakota-wide NaNoWriMo get together.

This would be a large scale meeting, we'd need a hotel conference room
sized area to meet (or something like that) so that we could get
everyone interested together!

So, who is in for this idea? Either this year or next...
