The general Write-IN Kickoff info (Incase google Maps isn't working)

Kickoff:
When? October 26, 2008 2-5pm
Where?
The Panera at Henderson and High (Clintonville)
4519 N High Street
Columbus, OH 43214

Why?
Free stuff! Well, that and the chance to meet the other people who you'll be meeting in front of the computer off and on again for the next November so it'll be a great time to meet and greet each other. There will be games, goodies and information that should getting together easier, like table tents, and banners and flags and flares (well, not the flares insomuch).

The Official Write-Ins!
When? November 2nd, 9th, 16th 23rd and 30th
Where: Panera at Bethel
875 Bethel Road
Columbus, OH 43214

Why?
Write-ins are known for having great record breaking moments in people's novels. They're especially wonderful come week two when things start to get down and uptight. Not only are you writing in writer-friendly environments but you are also out of your normal comfort setting. I don't know why this works, but it does. I have an idea this year of trying out word-wars with others. Where you try to match another's word count with yours within a set time period. The person with the most words within that time, wins.

----------
So many words, so precious little time.
Please Consider Donating!

Hi everyone,

Not sure if you've read the latest "Breaking News," but NaNoWriMo has still not met their goal of getting donations from 10% of participants. I think that is kind of sad since over 100,000 people have signed up. I know we are in a global recession and money is tight and jobs are being lost and homes are being foreclosed on and some of us are in college, but NaNoWriMo is the greatest event ever, and it needs our support. Think about how dark and dreary November would really be if you weren't completing a goal you've always dreamed of, while having this awesome site and all the encouragement that goes along with it.

This was my 5th year, and I've donated every year (I just really like to see that halo above my name, and sometimes I get stickers, which are fun). Any amount makes a difference.

There are 779 people affiliated with Columbus, and we've only raised $565. If everyone gave $10, that would be $7,790! If everyone gave just $5, that would be $3,895. Even if everyone just gave $1, that would be more than we have now.

I know I'm not your ML, and I know I don't know everyone's personal financial situations, but I just wanted to say something because this event is so important to me, and to thousands of others, and I really want to see it going another 10 years.

Thanks for thinking about donating!

-Annie
TGIO

Okay, I have to admit, I've been in kind of a slump. Seems that after NaNo my brain has been in this weird shifty place between reality and well, this.

I was figuring the 6th would be a good day as any for the TGIO. I have no idea where. I thought at the library, but alas, I owe them money so that was a no-go. I thought about Kafe Kerouac but the parking there is non-existent and is heavily mired in construction right now. I thought about victorians but I had no idea. Then I thought henderson panera?

Oh I don't know. Which is why I'm just giving up and asking you. Columbus, where do you think we should have the TGIO? And what day? I'm thinking next week's good as any. (SOme regions are doing TGIO's all the way up to the 12th but that seems like, so impossibly far away.)
Who's Hit 50K?

So far I only know of me and SouvenirBag making our 50k. She's over 100k, actually...

My story's not even close to being even halfway done though, so for me, NaNo's not even close to being over. I'll keep on trucking until I finish this thing!

For those that are still working diligently toward your 50k... Keep on it! I know you can do it. Wonderful novels will be born from these 30 days of stre--I mean, joy.

----------
I saw a dream you were flying in the sky
Without a fear...
Never touched the ground,
But never came to my side;
I tried so hard to reach out for your hand;
The ruthless wind kept your soul away...

Venting a little Frustration....

I hate the way I have to do NaNo every year. *sigh* I have to essentially write 100K words because I hand write them and type them out and it's TIME CONSUMING where if I stored it on a junk drive I could just snap it in wherever and go! And every weekend I go up to Microcenter and look at the acers, the model of laptop I want and dream.

Oh yes, I dream of a NaNo where I wouldn't have to transcribe as much as I do now (although I'd still do a little due to work and the portability of a pen and paper compared to a laptop or a computer) but it wouldn't be AS MUCH. All that free time could be spent writing instead!
The election threw me off

For two days, I could barely concentrate on writing, because I kept reading/watching news and discussing everything with friends. So now I'm only at 4519 words, I'm behind on housework, and I've got two little ones to take care of. With all of this going on, it is hard to stay focused. Any suggestions?
Sooo disappointed...but not giving up!

I started off great the first weekend of this challenge! I had over 1500 words which was okay with me. Then this little thing called "Life" got in the way...and now I'm SEVERELY behind! LOL! But I'm NOT giving up! I still have 10 days (including today) to complete this challenge and I WILL succeed! The way I calculated it (keep in mind I'm at 4646 as of this point) I need to type roughly 4535 words a day MINIMUM to still complete with 50,000 words by November 30th! So that's what I'm going to do. I can type 1500-2000 in about an hour so that's about 3-4 hours worth of typing a day. Break that up into sessions (so I don't get frustrated or overwhelmed) and I just might make it! It's going to be hard....but I didn't start this challenge just to wimp out! I'm on my way now.....wish me well! I'll do the same for all of you!

The calendar says the Panera at Mill Run, but Mill Run is West Side, by Hilliard.

Do you mean the Panera at Easton?

Hi all,

Is anyone scheduling or looking to put together a write-in on the west side, say around Grandview or Upper Arlington? There should be a ton of places we could hook up and get some writing done.

I noticed a topic was started in the welcome thread that a few people on the east side wanted to hang out. So I gave you your own official thread.

I also thought I'd leave this also as a general announcement for people who wanted to post things of "I'll be writing over here today, if you want to hang out" kind of thing.
D'oh! I misspoke

It looks like I put my foot in my mouth at the Nano meet-up today. I said that, last I checked the stats, Columbus, Ohio was beating L.A. in terms of word count. I made the foolish mistake of thinking that the numbers at the left side of that graph (words in millions) were connected to a real number (our bar showed us higher). They're not! Upon examining the ACTUAL word count bar, Columbus is in the high 2 millions, and L.A. is over 9 million. Oops! Well... um, now I guess we have a new goal to shoot for? *looks down guiltily*
Touching Base.

How's it going? Are the words flowing from your fingertips faster than you can write them? Are you struggling with every word as you put it to paper?

I'm currently writing this to procrastinate, myself. I spent most of my pre-writing sessions saying "oh, I'll figure out what caused the apocalypse and decimated the planet when I come to it". And I have. I was getting some string cheese from the fridge (it's fun to write and eat with, I don't know why.) When I remembered what my friend said at work the other day when I was trying to get him to help me out. "Why can't it be a sickness that causes the war?" Which made no sense, but a war that causes the diseases. That would work perfectly.

We can do it, Central, Ohio. I know we can.

German Village, anyone?

I live in German Village, and I was wondering if there were any others (or downtowners, brewery district, etc.) I'm a super busy person and though have intended to make it to a write-in, haven't found it possible yet. If anyone would want to meet up in one of the GV coffee shops, I'd be game. Looks like everyone lives pretty far out of the city, tho.
