OKC Meet-Ups

Ok, NaNo's officially going to begin day after tomorrow!

This leaves the questions of meet-ups. The when is easy: all this month, we'll meet at 7 pm on Wednesdays and 3 pm on Saturdays.

However, when the next meet-up will be is a little trickier. Obviously, this Wednesday isn't a great idea for a big reason: it's Halloween.

I will not be able to make any meet-ups on the 3rd, because I'm helping with a big Halloween party. However, if there is interest in meeting, I'll set up a place (or someone here can jump in and volunteer a) a place and b) to be there to meet other people who show up).

Otherwise, how about if we meet at the Red Cup at 7 pm on Wednesday, November 7th?

A map to the Red Cup can be found here.

It can be a little easy to drive right by the place. There's a big green building in front of it, and it's across the street from a 7-11.
March OKC Meet-Up

Your ML is a slackass.

And all things considered, that isn't really news anymore.

Anyway, it's already March, and it's time for a meet-up. Technically, this weekend is time for a meet-up, but I waited too long to announce anything, so why don't we move it to next week instead. You guys won't tell on me, will you?

Let's meet Saturday, March 15th, at 3 pm. Since NaNo this year, we've gone to the Red Cup and Red Moon. Let's head down south this time and meet at Cafe Bella (located at SW 89th and Penn).

I just noticed when I looked at the calendar that this Saturday is International Women's Day. I can think of lots of fun ways to celebrate.

And the first weekend of April is going to be Medieval Faire. If you're going to make it out, try to come and see me!
Life (And Meetings) After NaNo

It's already 2008!

We've got eleven months to go before NaNo kicks off, but that doesn't mean we can't still meet.

If you're new this year, you might be happy to know that we continue to meet through the year, usually on the second Saturday of the month. This month, we're meeting at the Red Cup at 3 pm on Saturday, January 12th.

Also, if you want to keep up with us through the off season, you can post here, as I'll be checking in from time to time, but we also continue to chatter on our Yahoo! Group: OKCNaNoWriters .
OKC TGIO Party!

Friday's creeping up on us, when this whole crazy month of break-neck noveling will have to come to an end.

That means it'll be time for the Thank God It's Over Party!

Last year, we met to watch Stranger than Fiction (there isn't a more perfect NaNo movie than that), then trouped out to Golden Corral to sit, eat, and enjoy not having a big deadline looming over us. We celebrated victories, and planned to do better next year when we had fallen a little short. And we really congratulated Sphinx, who had a coming from behind victory like we'd never seen.

This year, we'll have the party on Saturday, December 1st. We'll meet at the Dickinson Theater in Penn Square Mall (map here). The time will be announced on Friday, when the showtimes for the week come out. It'll be an early showing, though.

From there, we'll bundle up and head over to IHOP just down the street (IHOP is more friendly to loiterers than mall security, plus, they won't go and close on us). There's a map here.

Join us to watch the movie, or come in to see us afterwards at IHOP.

I'll post definite times here on Friday, but if you'd like to here from me personally, you can either call me at 816-3133 or send me your number (either NaNoMail me, or you can email me at kamikazekricket at aol dot com).

Let me know if you're planning to come or not, and for how much of the day, here. Also, if you need to arrange a ride or can offer rides, shout out here.

I hope to see lots of you guys on Saturday.
Our ML Did It! SHE WON!

Our ML did the amazing thing and won NaNoWriMo by just a bare 20 words!

Come to the NaNoWriMo TGIO Party tomorrow (we'll be handing out certificates and special awards and maybe even a Merit Badge or two at the iHOP). Bring snippets and favorite lines or scenes to read out loud for fun. We'll get silly as only writers can.

Congratulations also to the other Sprinters, too. Y'all are awesome, amazing, and mightily nimble-fingered. I think we need to have a Nimble-Fingers Certificate just for all y'all Sprinters who pull off these amazing last minute word counts to slide under the wire at the last possible second.

Y'all are great!

Rankings

Oklahoma Region: Elsewhere is currently ranked at 55, down from last year's rank of 31.

We currently have logged an average of 17,432 words per member so if you've written more than 17,432 words, you're better than average!

We also have $295.00 in donations, an average of $1.03 per person. If you can afford it, please donate to help keep NaNoWriMo going.

I think we're doing pretty good, but I also know we have several people who are close to winning this year and others who have come up from behind at the last minute to finish. Those wonderful sprinters will be the ones who raise our place in the ranks, so go, sprinters, go! We're counting on you! You can do it!

Give us a noun! Give us a verb! Add a lot of adjectives! Pad! Pad! Pad! Gooooooo - Sprinters!

See ya at the finish line.

I'm still holding out on that vague hope,

That I might be able to make it! I'm no longer even keeping TRACK of my word count, simply writing. Looking at it makes me panic, and then that makes me freeze up. I'm going to be an usher today at work, which means that I can be writing on my phone as well during my breaks. This will be so helpful! So, keep your fingers crossed and don't count me out yet. Not until that clock strikes midnight!

And then my stories turns back into a pumpkin xD

Our beloved ML will be out of town this Saturday, but some of us have decided to meet anyway at the Red Moon (13425 N Macarthur Blvd - Map Here)

3:00 p.m. until they close, which is now 7:00 p.m. Winter hours, I guess.

If you're free and want to hang out for a couple of hours, please drop by. The Red Moon has awesome hamburgers and pastries, lots of outlets for laptops, and lots of room.

And if you have other plans (it is Thanksgiving weekend, after all!), have the best fun ever! We'll be thinking of you.

Stillwater Write-In Saturday of Thanksgiving Weekend!

Since most of the folks I have talked to have well, other plans, for Thursday, we thought it made sense to go ahead and do the Write-in on a different date that was at a less hectic time. So, for anyone who will be in town:

Event: Stillwater Write-In
Date: Saturday November 24th
Time: 8:00am to 10:00am (or as late as people feel like staying)
Location: Panera Bread

Please note that this is a change of location, since Hastings' isn't open at 8:00 in the morning, and Panera has a wider selection of breakfast foods. ;)

Snow, Ice, Bad Weather, and the Red Moon

There's snow in Oklahoma, but from the weather reports, it shouldn't be in the Oklahoma City area until late Saturday night. The Red Moon has new hours - they now close at 7:00 p.m., so we should be snugly home before any precipitation hits.

I don't expect the snow to hit early, or even at all (it's only a 30% chance), but if it does, I'd rather y'all were safe than hurt on slick roads. I'll be at the Red Moon at 2:00 p.m. in case anyone wants to meet earlier and leave early for weather reasons. The Red Moon now closes at 7:00 p.m., and the weather isn't supposed to be in the metro area until after 8:00 p.m., and with only a 30% chance, I'm pretty sure it will miss us again.

Keep writing! We need those words!

And if you haven't donated to NaNoWriMo yet, please consider doing so. It's cheap fun for a $10 donation.

word padding like crazy? In all the threads I'm reading on NaNo, everyone seems to be doing great and not having this problem. I know I am, but I was wondering if I'm the only crazy one out there X_x

As much as I love my NaNo, and my characters, I think they want to kill me. NaNo paranoia is beginning to set in :P
NaNo 2006, Published!

Hey, all!

Just a bit of advertising, don't mind me. But I want to get the word out to as many people as possible. :D

Last year, I hit 50K on November 11th. I actually finished the novel on November 18th. On December 19th, a publisher replied to my submission, accepting the manuscript for publication. One year to the day almost (it was released November 13), my 2006 NaNo is available for sale! You can buy it from Amazon or a smaller company called StarCrossed Productions (it's more expensive, but more money goes to the publishers and, well, to me. But if you buy from Amazon, it helps my sales numbers. So whichever you prefer to buy from is fine with me. If you decide to buy. Not pressuring anyone. I'd make a lousy used car salesman. ;-D) It's a lesbian romance set on a small island off the coast of Washington State. The summary...

"ON THE AIR"
Nadine Butler is a popular disc-jockey on Squire's Isle, Washington. Due to her public persona, she is content with being in the closet. At the end of a particularly long day, Nadine goes to a Town Hall meeting with her girlfriend. During a debate concerning the banning of a book from the town library, Nadine surprises everyone, including herself, when she inadvertently "outs" herself. Word spreads like wildfire through the small town and, before long, Nadine finds herself threatened with unemployment because her sponsors are pulling out of her show. Desperate, and given one last chance to be on the air, Nadine barricades herself in the booth. With help coming from some unforeseen corners, she decides to make the most of her last time On the Air.

http://www.amazon.com/Air-Geonn-Cannon/dp/1933720328/ref=sr_1_1/102-9042...

If you decide to purchase a copy, great! But mostly I'm posting here to a) brag and b) show people that it can happen! NaNo novels can and do get published! I keep telling people... if *I* can do it... ;-D
OKC Meet-Up Photos

Here are a couple of pics from our meet-ups. The Red Cup photos are dark because I used no flash so I wouldn't disturb the non-NaNo patrons there.

This is our "Novelist at Work" sign downloaded from the Fun Stuff section. The jar has a floating Buddha in it and the book is a dictionary. We had 7 people total here on 11/08.

The rest of the photos are in separate posts so they load faster for folks with dial-up.
OKC Area Check-In and First Meet-Up

Looks like it's already time to gear up for another year together!

Here's the place to pop in, say hello, let everyone know a little about you and what you're planning (or haven't planned yet) for this year.

I'm Jasmine, and I was ML for this area last year, too. I've got a sketchy idea going, but I've got a lot of research to get through in October if I want to try to pull it off in November. It's a dark urban fantasy, and possibly a murder mystery, which is a little different from what I usually write. But what good is NaNo if you don't experiment?

This'll be my fourth NaNo. My first year, I started off strong, but I got sick in the middle of the month and never really got back on track. Second year was my first win, and a novel of which I'm extremely proud. Last year I managed to win, even though the novel I was writing kept making me fall asleep. Here's hoping this year goes better than last year.

So, as ML, what am I here to do? Well, I'm moral support, a cheerleader, a shoulder to cry on, and the girl who pulls together the meet-ups. I'll also be handing out official and unofficial swag at the parties and meet-ups.

How about if we get together on Saturday, October 13th, at 3 pm at Cafe Bella?

For those of you who might be new and wondering what on earth is going on, Cafe Bella became a regular hang-out during NaNo and the months following for those of us crazy enough to try writing a novel in 30 days...who also discovered that the task can be a surprising source of a social life. None of us are in this alone--we're all making that mad dash to the finish line, and what can be better than getting together with other people over coffee (and the coffee at Cafe Bella is excellent) to share the joys, weep together over the tragedies, and mostly just talk about what we're writing, and...well, whatever else we feel like talking about. If we writers are anything, we're chatty.

A handy-dandy map to Cafe Bella can be found here.

If you've never been to a meet-up, don't worry about having a hard time finding us. Cafe Bella is a lovely, intimate location, and I'll be the chick with the long brown hair wearing the long skirt who's sitting at a table with a big black cauldron in the middle of it. If you get lost along the way, feel free to give me a call to ask for help--I'm happy to provide directions. I can be reached at 816-3133.

We'll use our first meeting to plan for the kick-off party coming on Saturday, October 27th. And, well, gab.

We're good at that.

So if you're in the OKC area, whether you're planning on coming to meet-ups or not, give a shout-out here. Let us know who you are, and if you're wanting to come to meet-ups, what areas of town and what days are best for you. I can't guarantee that I can accommodate everyone, but I'll do my best.
