The TGIO party

Okay, perhaps I missed it, but I seem to recall a posting that said the TGIO party was scheduled for Dec 5, and more info would be posted later/soon/eventually/whatever.

Is the party on? Do we know anything further about where and when? Personally I need to make arrangements regarding work and such, so any info that's available would be gratefully appreciated. Are we going to include the option of readings this year? Whatever.
70,000 Wordcount Thread

Whew, still going strong. I'm hoping to reach 100k only for my own personal benefit of feeling like I actually wrote something worthy of being called a 'novel' (I read 700-800 pg novels all the time and want to be to that caliber, really.)

So, here's 70K: "trash". I find that sort of epic, but also sort of stabbingly ironic, and hopefully not an omen.

"Daria still strutted the hallways of the complex, but she kept herself away from the prison and interrogation rooms, where the trash and stench was piling up."
Question about being arrested in Portland

Not sure whether to put this here or in plot realism, but as it pertains specifically to Portland, I'll put it here.

Say you have a guy who's arrested for murder in downtown Portland on a Friday. He spends the weekend, I assume, in Inverness Jail, awaiting arraignment on Monday morning.

While he's in jail, he needs to overhear a phone conversation from a prison guard, duty officer, or the like.

1) Is there a duty station within hearing range of the cells, with a telephone, that is staffed by someone? What is that person's actual title?

2) Would it be plausible for a policeman on the street to call that duty station and ask the guy a question?

[Ok, perhaps a little explanation. Our hero is in jail on a murder charge. While he's in jail, he overhears a phone conversation that seems to suggest that a policeman has seen him outside of the jail, walking around on the street - so, a street policeman is calling the jail to make sure he's still in there.]

Thanks for the help. The novel is written in third person limited, so whatever happens, my protagonist needs to hear it or see it.
Post when you donate to Nano!

So, while procrastinating about my novel, I was reading the "History" of Nanowrimo where Chris Baty gives us the play-by-play of Nano's evolution. What really struck me was how expensive it is to maintain Nanowrimo. I mean, you look at the "3.8% of Nanoers have donated, rasing $180,000 and you think that sounds like a fortune, but really it's operating costs plus launching some of their great programs.

This inspired me to donate (I've donated a couple of times, and been too lazy to do it a couple of times.) They even have options for donating $10, so it's not like you need to come up with scads of cash.

I've created this thread hoping that people will want to post here, just like we all strive to get to the 25,000 and 30,000 word posts.

Happy writing, and show the Nano folks you appreciate by donating!

My husband and I will be visiting Portland this weekend and I don't want to lose momentum.

Are there any write-ins on Friday the 20th or Sat the 21st? We'll mostly be in the Sherwood area, but I could travel to a write-in almost anywhere in the area.

I know by the time a writer gets to 40k, you're on a roll and rushing (or gushing) with your ideas. But I had to take a sudden break and realized I had passed a new milestone.

And the word that shall nobly lead my novel into the 50k realm is (drum roll please.......)

"I"

How much more grandiose can you get than that?

Anyone up for a 'come from behind" challenge?

Hello out there in the world of NaNoWriMo. If there are others who like me, have yet to hit even the 10,000 word mark but are unwilling to give up, how about a challenge to keep it going to the very end? I know I started seeing posts from wonderful and productive writers who are well past the 50,000 count and started asking myself, "what's the point?". Well, the point is the same as the first day we started. To try to write a novel in 30 days. So, whether I make it or not, I want to go out knowing I kept trying, kept writing. If you are feeling woefuly behind like I am, let's give each other a gentle nudge and lots of encouragement. We can do this and we will be winners on Dec. 1st regardless of our word count if we keep going.

I'm going to try to make it to 10,000 by tomorrow night. That is my short term goal, how about you?

I mean a new _thread_ for any new people who would say, "I'm not around 25K, I won't read that thread, plus I have a banana in my ear."

So new people! JOIN OUR RIVALRY! It is all in good fun, and we don't want any real insults thrown around (the tone we are going for seems to be snarkyness or extreme megalomaniacal melodrama, more than anything else) but it can be quite an incentive to see your rival surpass you.

To answer my rivals questions;
Nope, I'm not the author. 5S is actually a common business practice on how to have the most effective way to run a work place. I just added a couple of "Dooms" to the mix. Here is a nice little graphic of the system;
http://www.lean.state.mn.us/images/5S_circle.gif

I actually highly recommend it for everything from housework to life planning.

Raggmopp, age and guile will beat youth an inexperience any day. Heed my words, I will reach the 40's today and before the weekend is through I will reach the 50K Mark! My! Words! Take out a permanent ink marker and mark them on your screen. Come on. Do it. Do it. It'll be soooo cool! All the cool kids do it, don't you want to be cool?

----------

Westside Write-In Sunday 11/22

The start time is 3pm, but I plan on getting to Panera early and snagging a table in the front room, by the main door, around 2pm. I am 10K words behind the daily goal, so I need the extra time. :)

For those who are attending, I'll be the radioactive redhead with the one-armed Plot Pirate Bunny sitting either next to her or in her lap. Trust me, you can't miss us. I'll also be bringing my extension cord / 6 extra outlets / surge protector thing-a-ma-bob. No one will be without power. :)

See you all tomorrow!

This thread existed last year, but I've yet to see quite its equal this season.

Here is where you'll post where you are. Not where you're going to have a write in tomorrow or next week. This is for where you are or where you'll be very, very shortly.

Hanging out at Coffeetime and hoping someone in the area wants some company? Why not post it for the flash mob forum? Just look for the bunnies (you have a bunny, right?) and you'll find the WriMo you're seeking!!
Tonight: writing and possibly pizza

So... I'm doing it again. Starting around 5pm, although I may be able to start a little earlier, if I get back from Safeway before 4pm.

Lobby of my building. 1221 NW 11th Ave. If you get here early, and see the bunny in the window, I'm downstairs...

If you want to see the bunny, it's not at the main door. Go around to the courtyard and look for the resident entrance at the inside corner. The large window next to it should have a bunny in the window... if there is, tap on the glass and I'll let you in. Once we have at least three of us, I will offer up the chance to order pizza. Or Chinese food. I found a decent place that delivers here...

Okay... I'm off to Safeway. I really do need milk and stuff...

Let's Beat Seattle!!!!

I don't think I really needed motivation to write but if I did, this would be it. It seems that every year, they beat us. At this time, they are in first place and we are in 11th. They have written 10,000 more words than we have!!! They're not quite as far ahead if we look at averages, but still, they are shown to be number one and we are number eleven!

What do we need to do to beat Seattle? Does anyone know what tricks they use to come out on top just about every year??? I think that this has gone on long enough. We need to put them in their place which is below us! Any suggestions???
Word-count of Insanity

You know, like the Cliffs of Insanity, only it involves a mountain of nouns sharpened by the brusqueness of adjectives overlooking a seething ocean of verbs.

In other words, you've hit 50k, kept going, and still want to brag when you hit new apogees of achievement... and then laugh evilly... mwahahahaaa ^_^

Yes, I've had too much coffee. 4th cup? 5th? Plus thin mints.

70k!!!
I'm still wondering where this story is going. I know where I meant for it to go, but my MC drifted off on her own and is taking her time to return to the path of plotty goodness. I blame the cute love interest. And my cat. Because it's always the kitty's fault >:3

Magic 70k word: chokeholds (very cool)
"Are you tempting me to show you all the chokeholds Kalina forced me to learn?" (Protag is not happy here)
Why in November?

Let this thread be dedicated to all the things that can go wrong in the month of November to slow us down.

My complaint is simple. I got sick. Now I'm stuck in bed when I had looked forward to Panera. Normally this just means I get to write in bed on my laptop, but my power cord broke, so I'm working on my husband's tiny netbook. The keyboard is a weird size, my fingers feel smashed together, and it's slowing me down. Then my husband has the nerve to ask about Thanksgiving dinner... while I'm trying not to vomit up the medicine I just took. Yes, Thanksgiving will be another "why in November" moment for many of us. I love the holidays but really... why this month?

That is my complaint. Feel free to vent here. It's cathartic.
How is your book?

So, excluding word count, how does everyone feel about their novel so far? I have been quite disappointed by mine so far. I picked the plot I did because I wanted something light-hearted so that it would be easy to write, but it actually has very little comedy. Some good points: I like a handful of my extra characters a whole bunch. I managed to tie one in just because I liked him too much to have him only exist for one scene. He's still far from a main character, but I'm happy to write him. Overall, I think this is the type of book that I'd pick up, read for a bit, set down, and never pick up again. My book would be a library fine book. :P

How are yours feeling?
Local Writing Buddies: The Write-Ins

Hi everyone!

It was really nice to meet those of you who were at the Central Portland meet-up last night. After gathering input from you all, we'll be having our first write-in this Sunday (the first day of noveling!) from 12:00 to 5:00-ish at Cellar Door Coffee (2001 SE 11th Ave.). Andrea (salty_dog) is the owner and has graciously invited us to congregate in her shop!

I'm also going to organize other write-ins throughout the week next week, on Thursday evening, Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. Locations are TBA, but they will all be close to downtown, and close to public transport. Check this thread for times and places for each write-in.

Each week of November there will be new write-ins happening, and this will be the place to find info on them.

I'm looking forward to meeting new NaNo'ers and seeing some Central folks again. :)

Happy writing!
