Pre-Thanksgiving Write-In on Wednesday?

Hi All,

We hadn't scheduled a Write-In for this coming Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving).

My plans have changed a bit ,so I don't have to do any cooking.

If enough of you are interested, we will do an Old Towne Orange Write-In, at the regular Starbucks location on The Plaza. This one would start at 6:00p.m. though. (If I go home first I'll never get back out of the house!)

Give a shout out here, if you want a Write-In this coming Wednesday, the 25th!

Radio broadcast from the Grand Californian?

I may have the opportunity to do something unique on Sunday, but I'll need help if it's to happen.

Each Sunday at 6 pm, I do a bit on the radio, a "Word of the Week" vocabulary item for a program run from a tiny station in Indiana, hosted by an old friend of mine. It's very small-time, very obscure, but fun. So I told my friend about tomorrow's write-in at the Grand Californian, and he thought it would be fantastic if I'd Skype in from there. I could set the scene, let them know a little about NaNo, and just see how it goes. There may be chances for others to get involved. (Plus I'm better with an audience, so having all of you around would be great.)

If there's time and if things are going well, I may also be called upon to give a "Sensitive Hearts Poetry Reading," another popular bit, in which we vigorously celebrate the joys of awful poetry. This week will feature an entertainingly wretched work composed by yours truly, at age 12, which would surely get any kid who wrote it today expelled.

But here's the difficulty: for the duration of the broadcast, I'm guessing 10-20 minutes, I'd need somebody to loan me a laptop that has a reliable online connection and Skype -- somebody who can show up comfortably early to set up and test their equipment.

What do you think? Can anyone help? Can it be done? Is it appropriate for a write-in? I'm also open to suggestions on how to adapt it to the situation, so feel free to get in touch.

Open Office word count VS. MS Word word count

This is really bugging/confusing me and if anyone has a decent answer, I'd love to hear it.

Finished typing yesterday at work on MS Word, checked my word count and it said 10,511. I get home and check on Open Office and it says (no Joke!) 10,813. That's a THREE HUNDRED AND TWO word difference. WHAT THE HECK!?!?!?

I wouldn't be phased if it was 10 or even 30 words different, but 302??? SERIOUSLY???

When my word count was lower, the difference between the programs was lower as well, so the more I write, the larger the gap becomes between Word and Open Office. And, given the option of having 10, 511 words or 10,813, of COURSE I'm choosing the higher count, but what if WORD is actually right?

Suggestions? Thoughts? Comments? Microsoft lynching party? (Kidding!)

Later opening Starbucks

I'm right now in the Starbucks on Lincoln just west of West in Anaheim, close to the 5 freeway, and this one says it's open til 11:30 every night of the week. Pretty big inside, too, and fairly dead. Someone would probably have to bring a power strip with a long cord to reach the area with more of the tables, though. Just in case we're ever in need of somewhere like this ;)

It's true.
Go ahead, tell me I'm crazy. But I actually think I have a better chance at winning now.
My last attempt was a bad idea. This one actually has major potential for real life novel-dom. I know we all say that about our novels, but I feel this one's heartbeat.
I couldn't keep my old stuff, it doesn't fit. At all.
So if i write 4,800 words every day, I can do it.
And I think this year might be the year.

Brea Early Evening Write-In

Hi All!

Thrusday night Brea Write-In. (5:30 to whenever) is at Starbucks on Imperial Highway and Brea Boulevard.

I checked it out. It's a mid-sized store, but they have several differet areas where we can congregate, plenty of outlets and of course yummy treats and coffee.

The easiest access is to go into the Gateway Center off of Imperial Highway. The Starbucks is right on the corner of Imperial Highway and Brea Boulevard next to Corner Bakery.

Greetings from the Midwest!

I have a situation as a virgin NaNo'er:
My word count is 4/5 + complete for the month (Yea!). I haven't even begun to be near completion for all the things I want to write. I believe I can have at least 2 - 3 times the word count for this writing effort; but of course, not in the 30 days.

I see a situation coming up for me in how to handle the month's end when I am not finished with the story. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Should I just submit to the point I have completed or make some mini-synopsis of the remaining amount and then end it. (for submission purposes)

I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Half-Way Pizza Lunch

Our Half-Way celebration this year is a casual Pizza Lunch at Zito's Pizza in Old Town Orange, this Saturday, the 14th, at 12:30 pm.

We can either, each buy our own individual pizza, or some can go in together and order larger pizzas to share.

We'll meet up. Spend some time enjoying great pizza. Talking about life, NaNo, our Novels, NaNo, whatever, NaNo - but No Writing. We'll be done in plenty of time to get back to writing, or to attend the regular Saturday afternoon Write-In in North Anaheim.

When you look at the map on our Google Calendar, you want the Zito's on North Glassell. It's just south of Maple and in the Courtyard near the back.

Please read all of this - at the end of this post are the things I need to know from you, so please tell me=)

I've said it 3 times now, but I just want it to be absolutely clear - we are meeting at 10:00. This is super important, especially for people getting signed in - you HAVE to get signed in at the same time, otherwise YOU WILL NOT GET IN. If you're usually late, plan to be there at 9:45, just to be safe.

The parks have been REALLY busy lately, and I would recommend aiming to be at the parking structure at 9:00 a.m. This is not a joke. It's been REALLY busy. I will do the same thing, so if it gets us there really early, then we are early together and can hang out that much longer =)

We will be meeting at the La Brea bakery on the patio - this is the bakery/restaurant that is right next to the main entrance plaza. (It's also right by where the tram lets out.) I will be wearing the BRIGHTEST SHIRT EVER (it's a sort of Day-Glo yellow) and I'll have a pink parasol open (unless it's too windy), so hopefully you can find me.

The plan for the day is to hang out together until about 5:00 (I'll have a better idea of a schedule the day of). After that, you have a Disneyland ticket and you can do as you please! I'll likely be there late, and anyone who wants to hang out after our brilliant day of writing is welcome.

We'll start at California Adventure, and write in some various areas there. There's also the perfect place for lunch there at the Pacific Wharf, where there's the option of soup and/or sandwiches, mexican, and rice bowls all in one area, and plenty of open seating (so don't feel bad if you bring a lunch). If you don't have a discount, you should bring cash and someone can probably help you out (I'm planning on a rice bowl, personally). I'm also going to suggest/schedule lunch a little early (like 11:30), just because food locations become really busy in the afternoon.

After lunch, we'll head to Hollywood (it's beautiful in the afternoon), and do some more writing (imagine!). Then, to Disneyland!

First thing in Disneyland is a trip to the lockers (exciting!). You should find yourself a locker buddy or two and go in on a locker together, ESPECIALLY if you plan on staying the rest of the day. The first thing will be the SCAVENGER HUNT! Which is another good reason to have a locker - if you don't get one, that's fine, but it's nice to have (then later, when the writing's done, you can ditch your stuff and just have fun =)). AND THERE WILL BE PRIZES!!

After the scavenger hunt, we'll head to Innoventions our way around the park. Wear good walking shoes!

Like I said, we'll probably be done around 5:00, at which point I thought we might do something fun together (I hear they have rides at this place) - anyway, something else to discuss. (My vote would be for Pirates of the Caribbean or the Jungle Cruise, since we could all get on one boat (at least for jungle).)

If you're interested in maybe doing dinner together, LET ME KNOW! I was going to recommend going to Cafe Orleans as a group - their food isn't that expensive, and the Monte Cristo sandwiches are *definitely* very split-able (and there is a vegetarian option as well). Their French onion soup is also delicious and not so costly. Once I hear from a bunch of you, I'll call and make a reservation, likely for around 6:00. (If you want to have dinner as a group, you should *definitely* have cash.)

And again, I'll be there late, so if you want to hang out, I'm totally down =)

Ok, I think that's all the news that's fit to print. If there are any announcements or changes, I will amend this post, so CHECK BACK HERE FREQUENTLY. I'll put them at the end so they're easy to find.

I recommend bringing:
-sunscreen (seems obvious, but we won't always be in the shade)

-hat and sunglasses, for the same reason as above

-if you're planning on staying late, it's been getting pretty cold here at night, so I would have a couple of layering options, to be safe

-food, or cash if you don't have your own discount so someone can help you out=)

-if you're bringing a laptop, I'd also suggest a pen and paper since things happen and batteries certainly can run out

-if you have any kind of condition or medical concern, don't forget any emergency medications and pertinent information - also, it might be a good idea to let me or an attending friend know if you think it's something that might be an issue

-I will bring a power strip, but if someone thinks to bring another, that would probably be wise, seeing as there are many of us and I don't yet know how many people are bringing laptops.

-lastly, bring your FUN!! =)

At the write-in tonight, Kat wondered if people tended to write stories with the MC of the same or opposite gender. Our five person poll had the following results:

So it was 3 to 2 in favor of the opposite sex. What about the rest of you?

3rd Annual Build-A-Muse Write-In

Don't forget!!!!

Today is our 3rd Annual Build-A-Muse Write-In

It'll be at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, just west of Disneyland. We'll meet in front of the Build-A-Bear Workshop at 1:00 pm and go in to build our muses no later than 1:20 pm. If you arrive late, come on into the store and find us.

Afterwards, we'll pick a restraunt, have a bite, and do some writing.

If you haven't been to a Build-A-Muse Write-In before, check with some of those who have. It's a fun time, and great for sharing about your characters, and getting some inspiration along the way.

If you'd like to come just for the eating and writing part, keep an eye out for a bunch of crazy writers with brand new muses and come join us!

The first three hours of parking at Downtown Disney are free, so we aim to be far enough along so any who need to can leave right at 4:00 pm.
