Any other NanaimoNanos want to try to connect for a speed writing event? I'm on Gabriola, so I can't stay late, but perhaps there are others on this Rock who want to meet on this side of the water? We could meet at Artworks in the village.
Or, are there any more meetups planned for Nanaimo?
The Left Field

Is anyone else getting stuff from way out of left field?

Okay, I knew this was going to happen. I've been reading about this for a while now, and was waiting for it. My story was dragging along, slug-like, leaving me with nothing but a bit of slimy trail and the odd glimmer now and again when the sun hit the slime just right. Trust me - slug slime is a fairly apt description for some of the poo I've put on the page.

Just now, I've had something come from way out of left field: it's an entire theory of evolution - or, the next evolution of the human species. Uh-oh.

Let's get one thing straight: I haven't been writing in sci-fi.There are no other worldly events going on so far. Sure, it's a story of human loss, discovery and maybe the whole triumph-over-our-own-ineptitude thing. But it's not sci-fi.

So when the hell did my protagonist fall in love with a guy who is now explaining his theory of the next stage of human evolution - through demonstrating what he himself is? The next damn stage!

CRAP!

I swear, I turn my back for one night - one night of having fun with friends, and along drive to and from Vancouver - and this is what they do to me....traitors.

Yes, I'm over the official word count. But no, I'm not done the story. I thought I was about 2/3 done...maybe pushing 3/4 if I did the cliff-hanger thing and kept a bunch of stuff for another wee book.

As of right now - 6:40 on November 23, 2009 - I'm officially messed up.

I'll go with it, and see where it leads. I have to. The guy is spilling his guts in the living room, recounting the whole sordid story. The mini-story within MY story. The lout.

But if he gets too long winded, well, I don't know what to do. Maybe it will become existential: the protagonist will hear him out, and then just leave - without ever explaining it.

Nice.

----------

Kootenay Meet-up Info

Hey there Kootenay Peeps!

Nano starts on a Sunday this year, so we'll be sweating out those first couple pages together at one of our traditional Sunday Write-Ins. Momentum is so important, as is the group support factor, so don't miss this.

The first one will be Nov 1 at 1 pm at Common Grounds in Castlegar. This is in the plaza that has the big Dairy Queen sign right on the highway. Bring your laptops if you have 'em. We'll spend the first half hour introducing ourselves and our work-in-progress, then plug in and get to work. If you don't have a lap-top, see if you can borrow one and email the work you get done to yourself.

We usually switch between Nelson and Castlegar places to meet, and we'll decide at the end of this meeting where the next one will be.

Looking forward to typing with you,

South Okanagan writers - final week challenge!

Hello fellow S.OK'ers!

I hope everyone is doing well - regardless of where you are in your word count. I'm learning that doesn't mean much. Okay, you might say "but she hit the 50K mark so she can say that", but I'm apparently pretty long in the tooth and am still struggling to get my story out by Nov 30.

If anyone wants to do some writing next week, let me know! I can head up to Penticton for a 7:00 meet, and am willing to stay for a few hours of caffeine, sugar or whatever vice is near by to get some extra story on the e-page.

Let me know - it's entering the last week, and we need all the encouragement we can get!

Have a great (and wordy) weekend, my writing friends.

Kelowna & Area Write-In: Sunday Nov 22

Hey everyone!

Where: Okanagan Regional Library in downtown Kelowna (link below for Google map)
When: Sunday November 22nd, 12:00pm - 4:00pm

Everyone welcome, just drop a post in here if you're considering stopping by. I've only booked the study room, as it's free (hurray); however it will only hold about a dozen people at a time around one large round table, and we can't bring in food unless it's water. If we get a decent turn-out, I'll try to book something bigger/better for the really scary weekend coming up next!

My real name is Madison, and I pretty much look like my avatar, minus the bizarre expression. Hopefully I'll see some of you there!

Here is a pretty map of downtown Kelowna:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&source=hp&q=kelowna%20library&um=1&ie=U...

Good luck in all your writerly endeavours!

Anybody within sight or past the 50 thou mark?

Woot! I have just over 2000 words to go until I hit my 50 thousand! Yay me! I feel relieved. The two years before this that I have participated with NaNo I struggled to get my 1667 daily quota in each day. But this year I am breezing by. I suppose it's just the story I have. One that I really needed to tell. One I am familiar with. That helps a lot when writing a story. Knowing what is going on and just getting it down. Pumping out those words!

Anyone else out there closing in on 50 thousand words? Anyone already past it? How does it feel to be so close? How does it feel to be on the other side?

I'd love to get together with other NaNoWriMo participants in the area this year, especially as I'm new to the area. Don't mind organizing events, either - just say hi. :)

Also, I'm actually in Qualicum Beach, but have no issue traveling to Nanaimo or Parksville, especially if meetings were during the day.

Anyone else from the boring FSJ area?

This is my fourth year doing NaNo (hopefully) and I just hope that I can get through it!

So let's get a kick off party going!
Half-way!

Well, it's the 15th of the month. How is everyone doing? ^^

I suppose the true half-way point is tonight at midnight, but meh, who cares about being exact? We've got sorcerers and spaceships to worry about. :)
----------
"And maybe it's just meant to be
Maybe you'll find a way to hold me
Come back and sing a melody to me
Maybe we're just lost at sea
Maybe I'm holding on to driftwood
And I'll be alright if you could
Sing to me"

I am new at this. I joined late and have only got 5000 words so far. How do you all find the time and the ideas to keep you going? I like the idea of writing groups and may be able to join in. I keep checking for times and days or nights that fit for me.
Terrace and Kitimat!

Hey,

Basically haunting the forums of Nano as I have been for the past few days, I thought us North-West-BC-ites (...?) should have a place to call our own. This year one of my friends and I are thinking of holding a gathering on November 7 at the Elephant's Ear in Terrace; let me know what you think! Good luck with your writing--even though November is still a long time away,

Erika

PS: I had to edit that sooo many times! Ugh, I'm so out of practice.
----------
There's nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein. --Walter Wellesley "Red" Smith

BC Elsewhere chat room

I noticed in another thread that the idea of a chat has been thrown about, but not much has been done with the idea. Would this be something everyone wants? And if so, where should we hold it, and when? It won't be too difficult to set up a chat in IRC or on AIM or something. Tinychat was even suggested as a possibility. What would everyone be comfortable with using?
----------
"And maybe it's just meant to be
That chapter thing

Anyone else doing the biggest run-on writing ever? I'm around page 80, and realize I've just written and written. Okay, I've got some extra space breaks where there might be a new chapter indicated...but...

I'm thinking there's going to be a heck of a lot of editing in December. And January. And February, March, April...
