I've tried this before, but ADD and a busy lifestyle have given me plenty of excuses for not finishing. I've spent the last year learning with other writers from Plotstorming.com and I think that I'm finally ready to commit.

Synopsis: It Ain't That Cold in Space

The story will center around a young warrior/commander named Tashin. He is a powerful and loyal fighter, extremely Spartan in his methods and dedicated to duty.

Tashin serves the United Intergalactic Federation, a vast conglomerate which has unified not only the Earth colonies, but numerous outlaying races. The UIF has been in existance for seven Earth centuries and is vastly successful. A central group of council members make decisions on expansion, asset control, and re-education of those whose ideals do not follow the sacred laws laid down by the Original Council.

Tashin is a rising star and a student of the Spartan social model. As a squad leader, Tashin molded his unit into a model fighting unit. As he progressed through the ranks, he kept his original squad members with him, mindful that completely loyal allies could be valuable in the future. Those people were his family.

Eventually, Tashin is commissioned as an officer in the UIF fleet and ends up as a commander of a massive vessel. Given the opportunity to name his vessel as a reward for his services, Tashin quickly selects the name Thermopylea in tribute of his historical heros. After several successful 'negotiations' with less than friendly outlaying cultures, Tashin is ordered to meet with the leader of the Vaspirian race.

Tashin attempts to negotiate with the Vaspirian leader, Maenad. As a secluded race, Maenad is concerned with the provacy and protection of his people. Over several weeks, Tashin grows to know and respect the Vaspirian leader and his people. Maenad's daughter, Mercial, is confrontational and playful with Tashin. In the end, Tashin reports back to his command that the Vaspirians have no desire to join the UIF.

Tashin is ordered to another area and soon is engaged in several, gory battles with a vicious enemy of the UIF. He soon forgets the Vaspirians and focuses on the ravages of all out battle. During an assault, he is surprised by a very angry Mercial. She attacks with ferocity, accusing him of betrayal. After a rather nasty engagement, Tashin is able to convince the furious Vaspirian that he never betrayed her people.

Slightly calmer and in the safety of the Thermopylea, Mercial advises a very surprised Tashin that her home world has been ravaged by UIF forces. Tashin refuses to believe her intially, but, is forced to accept her claims when Callios finds evidence of an all-out assault, ordered by the powerful UIF Vice Admiral Adirol.

Shaken and confused, Tashin is left to decide what to do. Duty says he must act on what is a treacherous act. However, by acting he may throw the UIF into horrific turmoil. He decides on a course of action, with the help of Callios and a reluctant Mercial. Their actions take advantage of the strict military law codes and UIF laws laid down by the original and may well force the highest military leader of the UIF to answer to a court martial on the Thermopylea.

Tashin, a loyal and duty-bound individual, is forced to face the fact that his leaders may not be right and he must do something about it

Excerpt: It Ain't That Cold in Space

Tashin saw life as a simple entity; some must die and others must be up to the task of providing that death. Politics and all its preening was for the weak stomached fools who thought they were more important than they actually were. Despite his feelings on the matter, Tashin’s rank demanded that he occasionally engage in those feminine games. As much as he hated it, Tashin had to pay homage to the sanctimonious imbeciles that frequently engaged his fighters in asinine skirmishes that proved nothing. The warrior snorted again as he regarded himself in the optical reflector. His uniform had several special and highly unauthorized modifications that greatly accentuated his tremendous frame. He may have to play by the rules, but nothing said that he couldn’t remind the contestants that he was indeed the most powerful entity in the room. Satisfied that he was indeed an imposing figure, Tashin activated a portal and withdrew his most prized possession. Instinctively, his fingers wrapped around the cool metal handle of the battle sword presented to him by his father the day he graduated from command school. The blade had been formed from titanium composite steel, folded a thousand times in the ancient way. It had never lost its edge. The gift had been a reminder, a tangible asset to keep Tashin’s mind where it needed to be. Tashin had never forgotten, each morning he reminded himself of his priorities, his assets, and his destiny. It was for that reason that his crew loved him and his enemies feared the mention of his name.
