Eagle Clan 3: Journey
an excerpt

Prologue
December 26, 1983

“Cradh, come to bed.”

Cradh Tryggvarinson stared down at the scrap of wrapping paper his daughter had written her Christmas gift on. Her wish was for him to get better and have the humans use medicine not magic to heal him. Even now, Solas’ present brought tears to his eyes. Maybe the humans could take the sliver of silver from his heart. Maybe he could be healthy and whole once more…

“What is it, love?”

“Nothing.” Adhar would worry if he brought up the surgery. She didn’t trust the humans and he wasn’t ready to discuss it with her. He put the strip of paper back into the book he was reading and moved slowly to the bedside. Adhar had drifted back to sleep. He slid into the bed and up behind her body.

Cradh instinctively embraced her slightly rounded stomach and the child she carried within. If the child was born healthy, he would be their second. But the likelihood that Adhar could carry the infant to term was little to none.

Even though she was nearly four months along and beginning to show, neither had the courage to even discuss the possibility. In the centuries they had been mated, they had lost far too many to even hope that this child might live.

Maybe Solas had the right idea. If nothing else it was something they could try. The risk would be worth it. If he could be healed then this child might live. It was his broken magic that cursed them and brought so much death. But maybe the humans could help…
