Excerpt: Waiting on the Sun

The inside of the building was just as simple as the outside, the walls were bare; excluding the occasional light fixture so as to not make the entire place pitch black. In the center of the room there was a doorway, leading to a set of stairs which went downward. the group followed Thalin through the door and into the stairwell.
"Where are we going?" asked Stefan as he joined up with the rest of the group.
"thenal sewant.( the sewers.)" replied Thalin as he ducked so that his head did not hit a low pipe that went through the ceiling of the stairwell.
"What did he say?" asked Stefan to Walter.
"He said we are going to the sewers." answered Walter as he casually walked under the pipe.
"the sewers? Why are we going there?" said Stefan as he too ducked under the low pipe.
"To meet one of the gangs, the Milicents, I believe." replied Walter.
"In the sewers?" said Stefan in an unbelieving tone.
"They run the city's underground," replied Walter with a shrug, "I just did not expect them to be literally underground." he continued as they walked further down the stairwell.
"How much further?" asked Roberto as he yawned, tired from all the walking.
"I do not think it will be much further." replied Walter as they followed Thalin down the long, dark staircase. Stefan slid his hand along the wall as they walked, the slick, grimy feel was much different from the smooth, clean feeling of the outer walls. they finally reached the end of the stair well, leading them into a large underground room. the area was huge, several times the size of the warehouse they entered to get here. Lights were set up to illuminate the entire area. the large stone floor, encircled by the natural rock walls of the cavern. there were pipes traveling in and out of the wall at various heights and for various distances. Some only went out a little bit before turning in some other direction and disappearing back into the rock, while some extended right across the length floor, only parts of which above the ground. there a large clock hung from the wall, drawing most of the attention from the rest of the room. A small stream snaked its way around the central floor.
“I lost.” said Walter. the other three looked at him.
