Never let an aircraft take you somewhere your brain didn't get to five minutes earlier. That’s what came to mind when, just minutes from final approach and landing, Penn’s flight went from bad to worse. He reefed back on the yoke, trying to pull the nose of the aircraft up from its steep dive, imagining the already deployed wheels skimming over the scrawny trees that separated the airport from a swath of one- and two-bedroom condos valued in the high six-figures. He reached toward the console fumbling to push up the plastic safety cover and toggle the alarm, slicing his forefinger in the process. The alarm sounded dully in the abbreviated cockpit, muffled by his headset.
