Synopsis: The Herald of the Eye
On an island in the sea between worlds, the eggs of dragons-to-be are laid, etched with inscriptions describing their destination after hatching. Beings known as Heralds, incarnations of various aspects of the dragon's personality, are sent to that world by the enigmatic Arbiter to scout and prepare for the dragon's arrival. On arrival, they symbiotically "possess" a human with a similar personality to theirs. On departure, they forget the entire experience save for vague impressions and unclear images.
Arden Riley, host of the Herald of the Eye, is working as night manager in a bookstore in Rancho Cucamonga, California, disenchanted with the corruption within the Heralds. The power that the Herald has granted him, magical vision, has never been entirely enough to protect him from the ruthless machinations of the Herald of the Claw. The dragon is coming to Earth, but Arden feels no more obligation to play the usual game. However, something's different about this world. There's no magic, but there seem to have been dragons in the past. From what little the Herald remembers of the other worlds, that has never been the case.
Soon, he will find out that the Herald of the Claw will be the least of his problems. The Heraldic system that has persevered for untold millenia across thousands of worlds is crumbling. Our world will be the one to break the cycle, and Arden will be the one to break the secrets looming over the entire Heraldic Path.
