Evil's Curse
an excerpt
Aadrea dropped the dried lizards and stood. Her mind was focused on the sounds, nothing else made sense, she felt no urgency to stay in the spot she had been. She wanted to do as the voice had told her.
“Aadrea, come this way. Do you see us? Come deeper into the forest. Come, dance, come, sing, come, become one of our siblings.” It said.
She couldn’t see them yet. The voice seemed to have more and more voices gather into it. It implored her while other’s sung.
Her feet touched the pine needles so softly that she made no imprint on the ground. Her eyes were filled with the sound, the beauty of her surroundings. Her thoughts were on the voices, all rising in harmony. She wished to see them. She longed to dance and sing with the voices that floated around her.
“Aadrea. Open your eyes, see us, and be with us, come, dance, come sing. Be our sister. Become one of our siblings. Open your eyes.” they implored gently.
She felt her hair lift and her arms along with it. She began to spin slowly, her feet as if they had their own mind, began to go and do what they wanted to. She felt weightless.
“Aadrea, you’re dancing with us.” The voices chimed in laughter. “Open your eyes and see us. You are beautiful, see how we compare.”
Aadrea tried, she couldn’t, “How? Help me, I want to see you.”
The voices laughed joyously, making Aadrea want to laugh as well. “It’s easy, just open your eyes.”
“They are.”
“Not your eyes do what your friend taught you to do. Feel, taste, listen, smell the air, then open your eyes.” They hummed. “Be one of our sisters. Aadrea, try.” They urged.
She did, she closed her eyes and opened everything else. She gasped in wonder. It wasn’t only the wind she could hear, it was everything else, the trees had grown more solidly placed in her mind, the flowers far more fragrant, the stream sang and chirped and gurgled, making the music around her more distinct.
Her eyes flew open. All around her danced the wind, made up of every color she had ever seen and even more that she never had. They took on forms and danced around her, tugging gently at her to make her dance more.
“Aadrea, Aadrea, you see us. Become our sister. You are one of us. You are of air and earth. Become our sibling.”
“How?” She breathed out, her own voice singing in sweet melodies.
Laughter echoed around her, and they danced on, singing throughout the woods leaving her.
“Wait.” She pleaded, as they were leaving her. She stopped dancing and watched them puzzled. “I want to be your sister. Tell me how.”
They didn’t turn back to her; instead they disappeared gracefully through the trees, until only one remained looking silently at Aadrea.
She appeared blue, but as she danced lightly towards Aadrea, arms outspread, her colors changed with very step. In her outstretched hands was a delicate silver chain with a silver charm attached. The charm had no shape and seemed to change color and the faint glow of the wind.
