Legend of the Dragon Orbs
an excerpt
Once there was a land divided into four kingdoms. Many races of creatures lived there – elves, fairies, nymphs, humans – any creature of myth and legend could be found there. The four kingdoms lived in peace for many years so it should not have been a surprise that a young princess – sweet and demure – and the most beautiful of all the fairies. The young princess of the fairy kingdom fell in love with the young king of the dragon kingdom. Her parents did not consider that their daughter might find a love on her own, and so they began talks with the parents of a young prince in a neighboring kingdom to begin engagement negotiations. This young prince was nothing like the love of the princess. While her love was noble, compassionate and strong the young prince was arrogant and cruel, belittling of those below him. While the parents began the marriage negotiations the young princess spent many hours with the young king, and as it ought to happen the talks turned to flirtations, the flirtations to love, and then as young couples in a passionate marriage will do, they allowed their love and passion to enrapture them, and the young princess was pregnant with the child of the Dragon King. The young couple, very much in love and overjoyed at the prospect of a child, contemplated on the best way to tell her parents that she was pregnant, and that they were engaged. The token of their engagement was on her finger, and had been for months, but her parents did not spend time with her, and did not see this. As her stomach swelled she spent more and more time away from home, if this was possible, and her parents became more and more involved with the engagement negotiations, because their daughter deserved nothing but the best.
On the day that her engagement was to be announced the young princess and her young lover, the Dragon King, broke the news to her parents, and announced her engagement to the Dragon King. Her parents, they were shocked and enrages – at first they forbid the engagement, but as their daughter wept, and the young king comforted his lover, holding her close and rubbing soothing circles on her back – their hearts softened and they permitted their daughter to stay with the young king.
Immediately the King and the Queen of the fairies journeyed to talk with the King and the Queen of the Elves, the parents of the young man to whom they were to affiance their daughter. The Elven Royals were shocked and disappointed to be sure, but they too had once been young and in love, and had both had a say in their own engagement. They agreed that the engagement with their son was to be cancelled, and to preserve the dignity of the young princess, that her marriage to the Dragon King should be expedited. The princess’s parents left and the Elven Royals went to inform their son that the engagement that he had so been anticipating was to be cancelled. While the young prince told his parents that he was respecting their decision, and that he would not force the young princess to marry him when she was pregnant with another mans child, he really was seething inside. He would have the princess, and he would make sure that the Dragon King paid for taking what was his. He had loved the princess for many years, and he had been overjoyed when her parents had approached his with the offer of their daughter in marriage.
While the young princess and her Dragon King planned their wedding, and the life that they would have with their baby they were married in a small ceremony, that only her closest friends and family were invited to. In the neighboring kingdom the young spurned prince gathered forces and planned how he would rescue his bride from the Dragon King. He was certain that the young King and somehow entranced and bewitched his young bride to be – and he would win her back. When news of their wedding was carried to her ears by his parents, who were overjoyed at the happiness of the young princess, he exploded in rage – shocking his parents. He stormed out of the palace and they did not see him again from that moment on. They sent word to the Princess and her husband, and the parents of the Princess, but their efforts were for naught.
