an excerpt

The sphere had no where to go, and just hovered there, glowing. So, I walked to the window, past the hustle and bustle of the code, and opened the window.
"Wha??? Look, you'll have to leave," a nurse said as she put her hands on my shoulders as to direct me to the door. I walked where she directed me, and I looked back at the window and watched every last particle escape to the wind outside. After I was outside the room, thus out of the way of the code team, I looked back at her body. It was a corpse. A lifeless, former vessel of a soul. They were wasting their time.
I turned to the doctor who was weeping, uncontrollably. "She's gone to heaven," I said as tried to embrace him.
"No, no, no... " he cried with tears and snot running down his face. "This wasn't supposed to happen." Although I am not sure what that's supposed to mean, I asked no questions. But somehow, I could tell that he knew I was right.
And as he sobbed and cried, I knew nothing I could say would take away the pain. Nothing I could say would bring her back. And for some reason, along with the pity for the doctor, I felt guilt as well. Just then, I looked over toward the window to the room, and saw a man, I guess the janitor, watching the code team as they worked. He seemed familiar to me somehow, even though I was looking at the back of his head.
The man turned towards to exit to the icu and began walking. I followed. As I got a little closer to him, he stopped. Someone ran into me then, another nurse going to the code almost knocking me down. She hit the floor with the supplies she was carrying. I helped her up, "Sorry."
When I stood back up, and looked again after the janitor, he was gone. So, I walked quickly out of the unit, and found him getting onto the elevator. Just as the door was closing, I saw him. He glared at me with those eyes as the elevator door shut. Those eyes... it's as if they peered into my soul. I felt a sick sense of disgust and satisfaction, combined. "Wait," I said though not fast enough as the door shut.
