Speeding In Reverse
an excerpt

How did this happen he wondered to himself. Whose life is this? He knew, like most sons, his mother meant well. But of course like many mothers, she meddled greatly in Richard's life. Today would prove to be no different. As he pulled up to the smallish white ranch, he saw his mother at the front door, waiting for him. Before he could even get out of the truck, he saw her lips moving, toward his general direction. He thought I just can't do this right now...I am hungry, and well, hungry.

"Richard, can you bring the barrel into the garage on the way in? Thanks dear" Linda Sterling was a petite woman with a plus sized voice. She held her own in every clearance rack scenario known to man kind. Linda was a formidable opponent in a trivial argument, as well as a skilled gossiper. "Richard dear, come in, sit down I have a surprise for you". "Ma, what is it." Richard looked at his mother in fear. He pulled out the wooden chair at the dinette and the kitchen and plopped down. She darted a furrowed brow in his general direction saying "Richard, don't throw yourself around like a rag doll, and easy on my chairs!" "So , whats all this about Ma..." He asked with a dull voice. "Well, I have made an investment" she was bubbling over standing at the sink washing out plastic containers. "Ok. tell me about this investment..." She turns, looks at him, pauses and joins him at the table. "Do you want a cup of coffee or anything?" "No Ma, I'm all set, so what about this investment" "Well, Richard, you will never believe this."
