Synopsis: Unto Me
A game designer is given a shot of liquid planetary immortality and is then kidnapped and released on a nightly basis by a fey spirit of fear, who is looking for a way to prolong her life through becoming a deity of a continuous mechanized system. The designer believes his lucid dreams are his way of maintaining his creativity in the face of an exhausting schedule and a stymied attempt to develop his own game and throws himself into the creation of a hall for his captor. Meanwhile, the fey, maintaining a balance between providing resources for her grand eternal hallway and keeping herself together, tries to control her hunger and restrain her desire to create terror in her designer while he designs the interior of her encapsulated eternity. Escape for the designer could mean either being devoured by fear or by a creation from his own game.
Excerpt: Unto Me
We waited, but the day did not come. They tell me that we, the collective “we” of people stretching back to within a great-grand-generation of myself, waited until the last bit, the last minute before the sun set on the empire that had no name and then, looking backward as we are forever warned not to do, left. It was the looking backward that allowed me to hold that job for years before being placed under arrest and then, in lieu of a sentence to more effective rehabilitative facility, to serve out my time here, in this cell of a museum in which I am not the only living exhibit.
