Synopsis: Booked Train to Baarda
The Baarda Library Train is experiencing financial difficulties, so the engineer takes on some paying passengers. Brigita Van Wieren plans to ignore them, be a good librarian, and get her paycheck. Oh, and steal a little magic from train lines on the side. Eysteinn Alkema just cares about getting to university - and keeping the stowaway a secret. Then a campaigning politician hijacks the train, followed by a businesswoman seizing control, followed by everyone battling for it. A wizard girl tries to end the fighting, and that evening the head librarian finds her corpse stashed behind the shelves in the caboose. Meanwhile they have to avoid avalanches, trainwrecks, and the mysterious, annoying personality tests that are popping up everywhere. This isn't the end of the problems - nobody has remembered to feed the Official Library Cat, and he is not amused.
Excerpt: Booked Train to Baarda
"Someone DIED?" Joona was asking incredulously. "Seriously, DEAD?"
"I don't know why you're so surprised by death when you've apparently been causing it all over the place," said Eysteinn.
"I have NOT been causing death all over the place."
"Tell that to the twenty-four people you slaughtered."
"It wasn't slaughter! It wasn't even my FAULT! I didn't EXPECT the whole place to explode like that!"
"Explode...do you know anything about exploding sheep?"
"Actually, that was a case of an exploding sheep."
"SERIOUSLY?!"
"It was very unfortunate."
"How did it happen?"
"If I knew I'd be a rich man. Some magic went wrong, I guess. Hit the sheep. We were on a farm. Shearing season. You can guess the rest."
Visions of wool and sheep parts flying everywhere passed in front of Eysteinn's eyes. "How many sheep died?"
"We lost count."
