“Do you think God really hates gay people? And that you’re going to hell?” I’d been planning to ask him how and when he figured out that he was gay, but I wasn’t really ready to explore my own sexuality. I wasn’t an extremely religious person, but I did believe in God, and his wrath added to my fear of being gay. I didn’t want to burn for all eternity just for picturing a guy naked. I hated fire.
